We REALLY enjoyed our time in Venice and could have stayed longer, but the end of our trip was quickly approaching and we still wanted to see Milan before catching our flight out. The train ride to Milan wasn't very long -- maybe about 2 1/2 hours or so on the high speed train. When we got to Milan we had our usual argument about how we would get from the train station to the hotel -- I wanted to take the metro and Michelle wanted to take a cab. We took a cab. For the first time on our whole trip we questioned the Rick Steeves' guide. All of the recommendations in the guide have been great so far. However, the Hotel Vecchia Milano is a total dump! The place was dark, dingy, dusty and ... read more

Off to Venice

Venice is awesome!! We loved the Cinque Terre but, after 3 days, it was time to move on. We caught the train for Venice out of Monterosso and changed trains in Bologna. Total travel time was about 7 hours. After 2 1/2 weeks, we've become pretty familiar with how the European rail lines work. It is very helpful to look up the schedules online before heading to the station. Then, when you get to the station, you can tell the agent what train you want rather than trying to work out options in broken Italian. We arrived at the Venice train station travel weary and starry-eyed. The station was busy with people. On our way out to the vaporetti (boat bus), I was IMMEDIATELY tackled by the police! Not the Venetian reception I was expecting. Thinking ... read more

We are scheduled to fly back to the US on Monday Mar 22. Today we received an email from Expedia telling us to "call them immediately concerning our flight." After calling, we found out that the first leg of our flight (from Milan to London) had been canceled due to the British Airways strike. After calling Expedia we learned that many of the shorter flights scheduled between Mar 20 and Mar 22 were being canceled however the longer flights were unaffected. So our flight from London to San Francisco was fine - we just didn't have a way to get to London. Per Expedia, we had 2 options - rebook our return trip for April 3rd (!!!!) or book a new Euro flight on a different airline (which we would have to pay for b/c BA ... read more

March 15th 2010

(Monday March 15) We left Florence on Sunday and headed by train to the Cinque Terre (the "Five Lands") -- 5 hill towns located on the coast of the Ligurian Sea in Italy. We chose to stay in Monterosso, the northernmost of the 5 towns. Side note: Scott has mastered the rail and bus schedules. Thank gawd because we'd be so lost if I had to figure them out. We probably would have ended up somewhere like Poland wondering why no one was speaking Italian anymore. On the way to the Cinque Terre, we took a short detour off the train in Pisa to see the leaning tower. Weird! It really does lean - a lot! I tried to push it down; Scott tried to push it back up (see pictures). Tee hee :-) The Cinque ... read more

(Sunday March 14) Since the only channel broadcast in English is CNN (snore), we've been watching a lot of Italian TV. We are completely hooked on "Affare Tuoi" an Italian game show loosely based on deal or no deal. We have set our watches to be sure to be in the room at 8:45 PM every night so we can watch it. We also really like the DeeJay channel, an Italian music video channel. On Affare Tuoi, instead of suitcases they use big, antique-looking boxes. Instead of hot models, the people holding/opening the boxes are potential contestants, each from one of the various Italian regions (e.g., Rome, Puglia, Tuscany, etc). The contestants so far have been a series of hot moms (per Scott) and a guy who looked like Mario from Super Mario Brothers. No one ... read more

The sun has found it's way to Florence - Yipeeee! Today was our second and final day in Florence. Got started by the usual hotel breakfast and then we needed to return the rental car to the airport. Then off to do some sightseeing. Although Florence is small enough to walk around we got quickly oriented with the bus system to get us from sight to sight. They have these cool little electric buses that zip through the downtown area. Our first stop was the Accademia where we got to see the original David done by Michelangelo. Then back on the bus for a wild ride through narrow cobblestone streets to the Uffizi Gallery, which is supposed to be the greatest collection of Italian paintings anywhere. For the first time we encountered a line but we ... read more

Driving in Florence

March 13th 2010

Here is a tutorial on how to drive in Florence - DON'T do it! We had a rental car since it was the only way to get around the hill towns of Central Italy, so we used it to get to our hotel in Florence. What an adventure that was. First of all, Italian drivers are all insane. We come from a country where there are strict rules about driving - you stop at a stop signs, you merge when safe, you yield for pedestrians, you stop on a red light and you go on a green light. None of the rules apply here in Florence. In fact there are many destinations in the city that there is NO way to get to unless you break a law or two! Of course with Michelle being such ... read more

March 12th 2010

(Friday March 12) We made it out of San G! HUGE thank you to Grazia, Bruno, Nina and everyone at Torracia di Chiusi for making our stay very cozy despite the weather. It is such a great place -- the people are great and Bruno's food is amazing! We left the farm yesterday and headed to Florence. No snow in Florence but it is FREEZING here. The locals tell us it's very unusual weather for this time of the year. Seems like wherever we go it's always "unusual weather." I'm beginning to think it's us... Before the Italy trip I went on a diet and lost about 15 pounds by cutting out cheese, bread, pasta and wine. How ironic that all of our meals here in Italy (seriously - all of them, including breakfast) include -- ... read more

March 10th 2010

(Wednesday March 10 at 1230 pm) Hallelujah. The power, heat and water are back on. We are still farm-bound because of the mud on the road, but everything else is back to normal. The snow is melting quickly. Our hosts made a huge lunch for us. We started with a bowl of ribbolita soup (veggie/bean soup with bread). After the soup they served a huge bowl of pasta and a bottle of wine. Thinking that was it, we were about to head back to the room when they brought out the focaccia bread and a platter of sausage and potatoes. Holy cow - way too much food. Then came the cake - this put us way over the top. Serious food coma. Anyway, all is well and back to normal. Weather permitting, tomorrow we are off ... read more

Stuck!

March 10th 2010

It is Wednesday morning and we are stuck at the farmhouse. Around midnight last night the power went out and as of right now it is still out. Of course by the time you read this we will be back online, but I wanted to write it down now to capture the moment. Without power not only is there no electricity, but there is no running water and no heat. The water all comes from the well and is pumped by electric motor to the farmhouse, so no toilets or showers. The main heat at the house is provided by hot water running through radiator units in the rooms so if there is no water we do not have any heat. There are 3 fireplaces at the house, however only one can be lit because of ... read more
