We spent about two weeks in Hawaii and had a great time chilling out by the pool, hanging out by the beach and basically doing nothing. We met a great couple from Kansas and spent some time with them driving round the island in a very cool convertible red mustang! Most of the time though we slept a lot!! [View Full Entry]

After Wanaka we headed north up the west coast of the South Island to get the ferry back to Wellington. From Wellington we headed straight up to Auckland via Tongariro National Park which was used as Mount Doom in LOTR so you can see the pictures we took! We spent a couple of nights in Auckland before saying goodbye to NZ and flying off to Hawaii! [View Full Entry]

Wanaka is a pretty town, well not that pretty but located in very pretty surroundings! There are lots of mountains and hills and big blue lake, also called Wanaka! Whilst in Wanaka we went to the world famous Puzzling World and managed to find our way out of the maze which was quite fun! Also they have some crazy illusions the best one is the room of faces covering the walls which actually look as if they are turning to follow you as you move around the room and a slanting room which makes water flow uphill and slides slide up! Queenstown is a pretty cool place actually. It has a great location by a lake and is surrounded by mountains. We stayed for a few days and met up with our friend Ellie who we met in Malaysia. [View Full Entry]

We spent our second night in Te Anau in the Ranch public house listening to the house band murder some classic songs and some local builders telling us that the Queen secretly ruled the world. The drink didn’t help as much as you’d think. We woke up the next morning expecting to be told that the Milford Road was still closed and so we’d be heading off for Queenstown (Adventure Capital OF THE WORLDä). To our surprise the road was going to be open that day, so having waited around just for this eventuality we sorted ourselves out and headed north [View Full Entry]

From Omarama we headed down towards the coast and Oamaru, stopping on the way at Takiroa to check out some Maori rock art. This wasn’t very well preserved (and only dates from the nineteenth century) so wasn’t anything amazing but worth seeing nevertheless! In Oamaru they have a well-preserved Georgian harbour and a resident blue penguin colony! We decided not to stay though and instead determined to press on to Dunedin, the main city in the Southlands. We carried on down the coast and stopped at the beautiful town of Moeraki. Moeraki is famous for the Moeraki boulders, str [View Full Entry]

From Geraldine we drove on towards Fairlie and then to Lake Tekapo. Lake Tekapo is beautiful, again a very blue colour and surrounded by snow-capped mountains. We then headed to Mt Cook around Lake Pukaki (where we stopped to have lunch with a nice view of the mountain across the lake). The sun was shining and it was perfectly warm despite it being the middle of winter in the region of the highest mountain in Australisa (3754m folks). The road to Mt Cook was open and the sun was shining so we carried on the drive around Lake Pukaki and on [View Full Entry]

From Christchurch we headed out west on the scenic highway towards the mountains. It was pretty rainy and misty after a couple of clear days in Christchurch and so the scenery remained shrouded for the majority of the drive! We stopped at the Rakaia gorge to take some pictures of the river, as it is a crazy blue colour. A lot of the lakes and rivers in this region were this unlikely blue colour, which I guess must have something to do with the limestone? The water is used for salmon farming a lot so I doubt that it’s algae (unlike [View Full Entry]
