Woke up a 7:30am - a bit better this time. Came down, and by sign language Damay’s mother told me that Damay was not at home. So, she called her, and I had a chat with her. It turned out she was at the coffee shop, and wanted me to come. So, her little sister drove me over. After coffee and a bit of people watching, it was back home again. Hung out with Damay’s sister and cousins for a while. Listened to them trying to read English, which they learn at school. And then I impressed everyone with my origami skills. After producing a jumping frog of a piece I suddenly had the whole family and the neighbors as audiences. Taught them how to do it, and a few other things - funny. Then I ... read more

Woke up at 8am, which of course was horrible late since the entire household had been up since 5:30am. Really felt like the lazy foreigner who couldn’t get out of bed (an do remember that back in PP I am having trouble getting up at 8am, normally a roll out of bed about 8;30-8:45am, just in time to get to work on time). Since this was the day that we were to visit the Pagoda and do our ritual offerings, the family had already cooked food which should be offered to the monks. Apparently the food that is offered goes through the monks to the ancestors, or it gives them sustenance to pray harder to their ancestors or something. I didn’t really understand the whole food to the monks when it was for the ancestors. Anyway, ... read more

So, early on Sunday morning, or at least early after my standards (remember it was a Sunday, and I had holiday), about 8am, I get a call from Damay, asking me to come to meet her for breakfast straight away and then try to leave to Kampong Cham earlier. Well, being to tired and confused to come up with any reasonable excuse for why it was too early I ran around like a lost cow to try and pack and figure out where the hell her guesthouse was. But, all went well. Found it, and after several cigarettes and espressos started to function. Then it was off to find a minibus, and that was an adventure in itself. The trick here is that you have a minibus, which has 12 seats. Then you decide where you ... read more

Next day, before work I got a message from Damay asking me to meet her for a drink at my friend's bar later that night. I got very happy, and readily agreed. Of course, here in PP things does not always goes after plans, so after making arrangement to also meet some other friends at my friend's bar, I received another text from her asking me to come to another pub. So, I finished my drink with my friends, and headed off. Which was a little bit of an adventure, seeing that I had no idea where it was. But, I found it at last, and half of the teachers from my school as well. Damay turned up, and decisions were made to go to Butterfly, since she has never been there. Butterfly is at the ... read more

So, it was friday again, which meant ir was nearly weekend. Not really the weekend, seeing that I also work on saturdays. Well, I only work for two hours in the afternoon, but it still don't feel like a proper weekend untill those two hours are over. Next week would be a holiday week. Firstly because the 2nd and the 3rd of October is Pchum Ben day - which means Soul Day, or something like it. Anyway, it is a religious festival to bless the souls of ancestors, relatives, and friends alike who have passed away. And of course all Khmers goes to the Pagoda to offer food to the munks and to pray to their ancestors and get blessing and all that which goes with it. Secondly, my school where I am working had decided ... read more

Now, after having lived in Phnom Penh for a bit more than a week, something quite odd has become appearent to me. In Sihanoukville, some of the local shops would after a while lower their prices for you, basically showing that there are two official prices, one for foreigners and one for Khmers. Of course, the first time you come around they will all quote you the foreigner's price, but after a while you got the Khmer price, which showed good business sense. But something else is happening in Phnom Penh. Maybe they are just more stupid up here. I normally buy water every day at the corner shop where I live. But, one day they told me that the price had increased with 20 per cent. I didn't really think much about it, since prices ... read more

I have finally decided that there is no future for me in this town, and after some thoughtful nights, had come to the conclusion that Vietnam might offer a better life, both money-wise, work-wise, and not the least food-wise. So, I get around to all my friends here to say my goodbyes and to collect my share of e-mail addresses. Finally I get to Bamboo Light, which in the two months I have been here, have become my regular hangout joint. I talk to the owner, and tell him that I am leaving now, that there wasn’t enough work for me here, so I am off to Vietnam next week. The next thing I know, he has called up a friend in Phnom Penh, and I am told to prepare my CV and go to Phnom ... read more

The other day I went to lunch with a local friend of mine. We went to this nice little restaurant adown at the beach, and there were only locals around and about four chickens running around pecking at the dirt. After being seated, or in my case, being hamocked, and exchanged pleasantries with the staff, we got around to order. Taking my friend’s advice we decide on a whole roast chicken and beers. The preparation does take quite some time, but we pass the time with comments about the beach and sipping our not-so-cold beers. Not until the roast chicken find its way over to our table does it suddenly occur to me… were there not four chickens here when we arrived, packing happily around at the ground. Looking around and doing some quick calculations on ... read more

So, almost two months in Cambodia so far. The 14th to the 17th of April Khmer New Year was celebrated throughout the country. And the Khmer know how to celebrate. On the last two days a water-fight broke lose. Everyone against everyone else. The road would be lined with, in the beginning, kids, and then as the war carried on, everyone else as well, throwing water-balloons on passers-by. Not much time went by before big buckets of water came out, as well as water-hoses. Not a soul was dry. Young boys and girls would load up on water-balloons, and then get on a motorbike, and drive around throwing water on everyone else. Even trucks were loaded up with screaming youths and water buckets. It was highly entertaining, although not so safe. The reports were that all ... read more
