| 14th November 2006 Jessica | Wow - From: A Matter of Rice That's really remarkable. And to think what we refuse to offer when we have so much and what they offer when they have so little. It puts it all in some kind of perspective and I'm glad that you share these moments with us so that we might remember what human kindness and life are supposed to be about. |

| 10th April 2006 Darren Lacy | Peace Corps - From: some things to look at Do you know Tara Stohler? I think she was in your group......she is a friend of mine from the states. I too was a PCV Niger, Tara came to visit me while I was there. Good luck with everything!!! Darren |
| 3rd April 2006 Sheila | still having trouble with fleas? - From: keeping on keeping on! Do this: at night, set a roasting pan or low container on the floor containing soapy water (dish soap is what I used) and shine a light on it. A desk lamp works perfectly, but a table lamp will also do. The closer you can get the light to the water the better. The little fleas commit suicide by jumping toward the light and into the soapy water. No pesticides! |
| 1st April 2006 Jean Sayer | - From: keeping on keeping on! It was so good to hear from you again. I really enjoy hearing about the country and, of course, hearing about you and what you are doing) It's hard to believe you have been there for six months. About the time you really get comfortable with the language, it will be time for you to come home! Love, Grandma |
| 31st March 2006 anne gannon | you go girl! - From: keeping on keeping on! Hi jamie, I'm mama ny Patrick and have really enjoyed connecting a little more with Pat thru sharing your experiences. You have even inspired me to incorporate some Malagasy in my letters to Patrick! I so admire all of you for stretching yourselves and in the process leaving this earth a little better place. You go girl!!! |
| 31st March 2006 Jessica | Fleas - From: keeping on keeping on! Hey there, I had a letter all set to send to you and some how I still have it. I had a little method for helping with the flea situation. Uou put a low pan, kind of like a baking pan on the floor and fill it with water, then set a small cup upside down with a little candle on top, and keep it on at night. The fleas will try to hop to the light, and end up in the water where they will meet their demise. It's better than using a chemical although you end up waking to the Poseidon Adventure. My neighbor had a cat whose fleas decided to seek asylum in my place and this little method helped a lot. I hope it can bring you a little peace. Hugs, Jessica |
| 28th February 2006 jo Hauser | rachel berthiaume's mom - From: some things to look at I am sorry you are being harassed by the fleas. I have heard they are a plague there. I don't think rachel has been inundated by them yet. Hope that you can overcome all the challenges. |

| 2nd December 2005 Mom | We miss you too! - From: Hiara hiady amin'ny SIDA! We miss you too - especially being able to talk to you without a month delay. We are snowed in here so badly that we had to cancel a trip to Billings, so it's hard to imagine the heat. I wish we could be there to hug you for Christmas, but I know you are going to be great at your village. They will learn to love you as much as we do. Love Mom |
| 2nd December 2005 Jean Sayer | - From: Hiara hiady amin'ny SIDA! I am seeing snow today. First real snow storm I've seen since I moved down here. Bob shoveled off my driveway this morning. | 19th November 2005 Jean Sayer | - From: things i've learned so far One of the things you have learned reminded me of a story. Do you know the difference between a rich man and a poor man? A rich man has a canopy over his bed. A poor man has a canopy under his bed. I think I heard this at a rodeo. The clown asked the announcer the question! Love, Grandma |

| 7th November 2005 Jessica | Wow!! - From: Tsarazaza Site Visit You make Madagascar sound amazing!!! Is the language difficult to pronounce? I want to have dinner with you when you come back so I can try all your little delicacies. |
| 26th October 2005 Jessica | Incredible!!! - From: Eto Madagasikara Wow!!! You are really grasping the language well and you have such compassion and patience. You make me want to go to Madagascar. I love that you were calling the chicks bananas. Hey, they're yellow right? Anyway, it sounds really amazing from what you are saying. Do you just drink plain coffee or do you get lattes and things like that. Is it like a Farmer's Market there on Wednesday. Obviously they don't airlift an Albertson's Super Market in there. Do you need anything? |

| 1st October 2005 David Shannon | Oh God, the memories! - From: Moon over Philly This morning is the very first time I have even looked at blogs. After a dozen I decided they were mostly written by people who mostly wanted to listen to themselves and really had little of interest to say. I was certain I had nothing to comment on. And then I stumbled onto your posting!!! Ack - the memories! I am a native Montanan who attended Cornell and then went back to MSU at Bozeman for Grad School. After working for DOL in Billings, I - wait for it - joined the Peace Corps. I didn't fly from Bozeman to Philly - but I did drive a battered old orange VW Camper Van (called the "Lorax")from Dutton (N of Great Falls) all the way to Philly for Peace Corps orientation. I was sent to Iran as an Agricultural Advisor. I loved pre-revolution Iran and it set me on a new life. I did grad school again at the School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vermont - went to Niger, West Africa, with Lutheran World Relief (digging wells in the Sahel) - then Jacmel, Haiti, with Foster Parents Plan (now ChildReach) rum punch on the Caribbean beaches - and then the dream! Assigned as Country Director in Nepal with PLAN. Fabulous times - then met a NZ woman working with Mother Theresa Hospice in Kathmandu - moved to NZ, married and now have two girls I am encouraging to consider voluntary service abroad. It's been a fascinating life - beginning with that long trip from Montana to Philly. Drop me a line at DaveShan@quicksilver.net.nz if you want to learn more about a life like that. Cheers from Down Under |
