Smoke from somewhere up in the village rises to meet the clouds that are beginning to roll over the tree-laden but somehow perpetually chocolate orange coloured mountains that surround me - as though autumn has somehow found its permanant home in a tiny part of this ever lush green country. Forgive me - my poetic license must be approaching expiry by now! I suppose that the inability to interract sufficiently in the predominant language of the area pushes me into crevices of metaphor that would otherwise remain, rightfully, undiscovered. It's 1708 and I'm sitting in the bar of the hostel, listening to music that doesn't really fit the surroundings, electricity cables point my eyes towards the small bay that is Taganga. The humidity of the area is like nothing that I've ever known before. It's odd ... read more

YOU decide...

I need your help I've arrived in Taganga which is nearby Santa Marta on the Caribbean coast. I'll give you a full update later. It's hot here (although not as hot as I expected), fairly overcast, extremely sticky. I have the option of going to visit La Ciudad Perdida - The Lost City. Involved is a 5 day / 4 night trek through the rainforest and back again. The cost is a whopping 500.000 COP but it includes all meals, entrance fees, a guide, lodgings (hammocks), transport to and from the start of the trail etc. I really can't decide whether or not to do it. 5 days represents a 20th (ish) of my total journey time. Then, everybody who's done it says "just do it". It's supposed to be horribly hard work but totally rewarding. ... read more

OK, I'm going to try to make this one brief, largely because there's not much to say. I woke up very aware of the fact that I still wasn't 100% sure how I was going to make the next leg of the journey. A flight was an option as was the bus. I guess if you were reading the last blog carefully, you'll realise that I took the bus...You'll find out why in a minute. As usual, breakfast at the hotel was delicious if entirely untraditional. Arepa, bread, scrambled eggs with sausage. Set me up well for the day. I wanted to get some shots of the hotel and the surrounding area so off I trotted with my camera, first around the hotel, and then the area where I was staying - Cabecera. As I was ... read more

There's no point trying to deny it - Sunday was all about recovering from the excesses of Friday and Saturday. The hotel where I'm staying is clean and comfortable, located in (what I'm told is) the best area in Bucaramanga and the staff are super-friendly. But one BIG gripe that I have with the place is that it's noisy - every morning I'm woken at around 6.30 by traffic and chattering in the restaurant, cleaning staff etc etc. It's really more due to the design of the building. My room looks out onto another room across the tiny atrium of the hotel. Two floors below is the restaurant, reception area, main entrance etc. The windows are single glazed and there is no escaping the noise first thing in the mornings - other than judicious use of ... read more

As I start to write this, I just realised that (in the UK at least) it's just become March. Feels weird (for no reason, it's happened 38 times in my life already). It's almost springtime, guys. Not long to go. I really hope the weather cheers up for you soon. Yesterday (Saturday), I packed my bags and headed north to Bucaramanga. I've found that every place that I've been to so far in Colombia, I've wanted to stay just a bit longer than originally anticipated. In some cases, I've wanted to stay a lot longer. It's hard sometimes. You get a sense of feeling comfortable with a place and then you move on and start all over again. One of the great things about not having a fixed itinerary is the ability to be flexible. But ... read more

Oh my GOD, I'm going to die!! Brake, you idiot! BRAAAAKKKE! Too late! I'm going to die...damn. And just before the impact...I wake up. Thus started my day yesterday (Friday). Looks like the crazy bus driving has finally got to me. Fortunately, my bad dream served a purpose - to wake me up in time to get down to the market and try "arepa de maíz pelau" - another local speciality. Alexandra (of café con-versano), suggested I go down to the market where her mother worked in a café which makes them - but they are only available from 6am until 9am....that's kind of early for me these days. I decided to take my camera with me in the hope of getting some decent shots of San Gil for you - but I had a pretty ... read more

With my gammy knee having recovered, I decided (as hinted at in the previous post) to do some "crazy" adventure activity stuff. I have to while I'm here - I'll have no credibility if I leave San Gil without doing something! Mónica (she who is always right), suggested La Cueva del Indio - Indian Cave. I've never done caving before so I thought "why not - it's not too extreme" :) It was actually super-easy to organise. I spoke to Blanca who works here at the hostel and she made a call, took my 25.000 COP and gave me directions to the bus station - I already knew where it was because I'd been to Barichara yesterday. I was instructed to get a bus to Páramo (3.000 COP) which is an EVEN SMALLER town than Barichara. ... read more

San Gil (pronounced "Hill") is aptly named. It's built into a valley and it has hills that would make a Darwenian blush - I genuinely thought that the cab was going to roll over as it rounded the bend to take me to my hostel. My hostel is The Macondo Hostel and it sits at the top of the steepest hill ever, about 2 blocks north (I think) of the main park / square. San Gil is renouned for its adventure sports and the people who are here are, unsurprisingly, kinda sporty. That said, the vibe in the hostel is good and, as with the Cranky Croc, very welcoming and friendly. I opted for a privte room with private bathroom and, as I think that I mentioned in the last posting, the private rooms are in ... read more

It's been a couple of days since my last update and there's a fair amount to fill you in on, so I'm going to do this update in two parts. I guess that the last time that I wrote I was enamoured with Villa de Leyva and its laid back way of life. It really would have been too easy to stay there, but on Monday night I was sitting in a bar on my own overlooking the square which was totally empty. There was a heavy thunderstorm and webs of lightning streaked across the sky - a silhouette of mountain etched into the distant landscape. Beautiful. I noticed that the lightning moved across the sky rather than heading towards the earth - is this normal? It was interesting to watch but that it was interesting ... read more

February 22nd 2010

Hi all I had to look back to see what it was that I last wrote about - and it was only Saturday that I wrote it! Guess that the laid back VdL vibe is working its magic on me. Saturday night was the main night of the astronomy thing in the main town square here. The place was packed. I tried to get some photos, but I hadn't bought my tripod out and everything looked a little shaky! There was a point where there were hundreds of people in the square, each with a telescope of some description. And then they turned off the lights on the square and there was this huge collective "wowww" resounding around the plaza. Having stuffed myself for lunch, I wasn't really up for dinner, so I went to a ... read more
