Spring is very slowly getting under way here in Alamosa. I am sitting outside on what has been a very beatiful day with about six months left to go in my term with Americorps. While it is probably about 55 degrees outside with plenty of sunshine and birds chirping like crazy, I say spring is coming slowly because last week it snowed three times... I have never lived anywhere that gets snow in April, but I'm learning that it is a very important thing here because we don't get much water otherwise. The snow serves to irrigate things pretty well as winter is ending, and then helps stock up the groundwater until the rain comes in August. I've been on a few trips in the past few weeks - visited several frozen water falls and took ... read more

So this entry is a bit out of date (I wrote it in January), but figured it was worth posting... To offer you a short recap, Thanksgiving went well despite the very hectic nature of it all. We handed out about 400 boxes of food and served Thanksgiving dinner to over 200 Alamosa residents and their families. AND Billy Fettweis graced Alamosa with his presence for a short 48 hours. We had a wonderful time, though, and I was so happy to see someone from home. We went on a beautiful hike near the Sand Dunes on the Mosca Pass Trail, and he got to experience some of what life is like in the Valley. It was a very different Thanksgiving for me, not being with family back East. We spent the morning prepping and serving ... read more

Things are continuing to go well here in Alamosa, although I have admit I've been a bit homesick lately. Most of the time I'm pretty busy which helps with missing DC, but I'm very much looking forward to coming home for a break at Christmas. I've had the chance to meet some new friends outside of La Puente over the past few weeks, which has been a great help. It's nice to be able to spend time with people outside of those you work and live with. A couple weekends ago, my housemate Kevin and I went on a retreat with the Campus Ministry group from Adams State College. This was where I met most of the new people, and it was awesome serving as a semi-retreat leader. I really think that being involved more in ... read more

It's been a while since I have written, and I'm sure all of you have been waiting on the edge of your seats for my next entry... It's going to be pretty long because a lot has been happening, so get ready to procrastinate from whatever you were doing! Almost 3 weeks ago, Sarah, Brandy, and I decided we were going to go to the International Hot Air Balloon Festival in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Well, actually, Brandy decided we were going this past summer before she even met us, and needless to say, we all had been waiting for this for weeks! We decided to leave on Friday night after work and drive down to Albuquerque. Because we are volunteers on a budget, we were hoping to stay over in NM for two nights for as ... read more

Soup of Stones?

This past week in Alamosa was pretty awesome! One of the big events for the community gardens for the Fall was this week - Stone Soup. Polston Primary School, where the largest of the two community gardens is located, hosts an event every year (for the past 7 years) themed around this children’s book. Some of you may be familiar with the book, Stone Soup; however I wasn’t until this week. To keep it short, the book is about three strangers who come across a village of people who are shy and selfish and have always kept their food and belongings locked up in their houses only for themselves to use. So when the strangers are hungry and have no food, they begin making a pot of stone soup (which clearly would not be very tasty. ... read more

So, my latest adventure occurred over Labor Day weekend, when two of my new friends (Sarah and Ben) and I decided to go backpacking. This was going to be another first for me, as I had never been backpacking before. We were headed to Wheeler Geologic Area, which is known for its amazing rock formations and other beautiful scenery. We awoke early on Sunday morning and drove about an hour and a half to reach the parking area near Creede, CO. While this was my first backpacking experience, it was also the first time I had been hiking in a while. AND to top it off, my first all-out camping trip (and by all-out I mean pitching a tent, cooking over a fire, and peeing in the woods). I was really excited to get started, even ... read more

I apologize for not writing in a couple weeks, but things have been so busy here with work and getting settled!! I’m going to try to briefly recap the past couple weeks of travels for both work and pleasure, both inside and outside the San Luis Valley. On the weekend of August 24, most of the gang took the Scenic Railroad to the nearby town of Monte Vista, partially to visit the thrift store there but mostly just for the fun of it. It was great seeing the mountains from a different viewpoint, and we all had fun taking lots of pictures standing on the back of the train car. Once arriving in Monte Vista, our mission was to find costumes to wear for the 80s themed pizza night my house was hosting later that week. ... read more

An unbelieveable amount of things have happened in the two weeks since I left Maryland, so much that it’s hard to believe it has only been two weeks. After arriving in Alamosa and getting settled at what will be my new home, all of the volunteers spent the first week doing orientation at all of our service sites. To brief you a little, Alamosa is located in the San Luis Valley (which is roughly the size of Connecticut). Alamosa and its surrounding counties rank as some of the most impoverished in the nation. La Puente Home, Inc. is the organization with which I will be working for the next year. Due to the lack of social services in the Valley, La Puente has services that cover a lot of areas and encompass large amounts of Valley ... read more

On Wednesday, July 30th, Amy (my best friend from high school for those of you who don’t know) set out to drive 2,000 miles across the lovely USA with the final destination being Alamosa, CO. The week prior to leaving home, I began freaking out a bit about the huge step I was about to take. However, on the day our trip began, I was excited for the adventure to begin. The goals of trip were to travel through states that neither of us had visited before and to not have my bike fall off of the back of the car. I’m glad to say both goals were completed, and I was able to log 8 new states in 6 days! Our trip began in Maryland and passes through West Virginia before making our first stop ... read more
