Recruiting Drive Day 2

We started Sunday off with a trip to a local Hindu temple. For lack of a better word this temple is like a chain in that there many all over India. We had to take our shoes off. The temple was incredible. It had scense of Shiva and the other Hindu gods around the outside with the shrine in the middle. It was the only temple you can take pictures in but you can't take pictures of people in t

Work Hard Play Hard

After a very active day we finally made it to the mall and we treated ourselves to Ruby Tuesday's. The shocking thing about this excursion is that the mall was like any other mall in any Western country. Except for the loud Hindi blaring in the mall's center some sort of talent show it was very normal. The contrast also shocked me outside were very poor people in a street market while insi

Recruiting Drive Day 1

Day one of the recruiting drive was intense. By the end of the day 160 people had come through the doors. While I wasn't part of the first drive I think this round was much more organized and efficient. It was organized into several stages with each stage filtering out candidates. Stage one was a technical test stage two was an interview with a 2 person panel. Stage three was an interview wi

Exploring Hyper City

We had set out to explore the mall Saturday morning before the recruiting drive but upon arriving we realized the mall didn't open until 11 AM we were shooting for 10. So...we hoofed it over to the Hyper City next door to explore.

Tray does not have or bring his laptop. Probably a good thing he was always out on the floor talking with the team. I got out and about quite a bit too but with a computer in front of you it is easy to get sucked in to the thing.

Some pics of Tray talking to the team. Then me Deepanjan and Hemali off to Machaan for some authentic Indian food. Machaan stands for house in the trees so it had trees inside like a Rainforest Cafe except way better. After that I get really bold and decide to ride an auto rikshaw back to the office. Yee haw

Several people told me there was a lot of poverty and therefore crime in Mumbai but any thug is likely to be skinny and somewhat underfed so I think I could take one maybe too. Unfortunately I wasn't prepared for this attack don't worry I'm being facetious. I was strolling along when this little girl started coming toward me. Obviously she was cute and she made the hand to face gesture to

Adventure in the AM

With the boss out of town and the fact that our teams don't typically start until noon we decided to head in a little late around 1000. With that I decided to venture out not sure exactly what I was going to do so I got my bright red swimming trunks and tennis shoes and headed for the beach. Security to the beach is heavy guess the JW Marriott doesn't want to get invaded so there is a big d

Views from the Hotel

Thursday was the first time I had time to get some shots of the hotel in the day light. Granted not many but we were heading in to the office quite early. Plus I was a little disoriented. Of all things my room does not have an alarm clock and I had asked for a wake up call 30 minutes late. That coupled with a couple emails that pissed me off derailed my morning so I was late.Generally sleeping

Dinner and Crash

We were all feeling it so we got back to the hotel and grabbed dinner at an italian place. Entry way was quite grand but I was not impressed with my food. I ordered lobster spaghetti but what came out was the whole lobster cut in half. While I like whole lobster I didn't want to think about all bile and gut juice floating around in my spaghetti. I ate it nonetheless.Phew...I was tired then a

Magnus

I'm off my soap box now. We are now at the Magnus building where our teams are. Forgot to mention another colleague had warned us that Indian culture is quite different. If you ask them to take you some place they wobble their head and say yes but when it comes down to it they don't know where they are going. This prediciton happened to us trying to get to the first building. We asked for

Wake up call

I consider myself a progressive thinker and semiwordly in my view but this conversation with Atul the COO was an eye opener even for me. We talk a lot about out sourcing work to India but now India is talking about outsourcing work to someone else. They have their eye on climbing the value proposition food chain and they are hungry and ambitious. This is going to sound harsh but I feel like

First day

I wake up feeling very well sort of excited and anxious. Having arrived in the dark you don't get the full affect of being in a completely different country with all the squiggly lines. We meet at 830 for a quick executive breakfast and we are off. Our driver is already here his name is Prithvi. He speaks broken English but is a pretty cool guy. I'll have to get a picture of him and fill i

Posh

Checking into the room now apparently I got a very nice suite with a great view. Several times I have been warned not to tell my boss because she will be jealous. The hotel is the J.W. Marriott so they know how to cater to westerners. Everyone is very polite and willing to serve. Hopefully I won't spend much time here but it is tempting. Royal bathroom king size bed super big screen etc.

We boarded the plain from Newark and luckily are flying business class. I empathized with all the suckers flying in coach but not enough to give up my seat. The flight was a little over 14 hours and to be honest I was dreading it a little bit. I was armed to the teeth with gadetry to occupy my boredom like magazines books HP movies Star Wars movies cards MP3 player work stuff etc. but wh

Surprisingly we were in the air on that Midwest Airlines flight and you will be glad to know the glue stick worked on my passport We my boss and I landed in New York's Laguardia with no issues except that we had 10 hours to kill. With that we headed to Newark via taxi to drop off our stuff. Maria can be persuasive so she talked them into holding our luggage so we could go into NY.Maria is a

I don't want to focus on the negative but today I got to the airport just in time to hear that all flights out of KC had been canceled due to the fog.
