Melissa Campbell Out with the old...in with the new! This Cairo trip is a major turning point in my life. After living there for 6 years as an American expatriate, I have returned after an abrupt departure 7 months ago. You will not see pyramids, temples, or museums...but smiling faces, interesting places, and curious things that were part of my everyday life in Cairo. I will miss everyone and everything dearly, but for myself and my children, we will close this book and start another wonderful chapter of our lives!

Today I am Cleopatra Africa » Egypt » Lower Egypt » Cairo
Ok, maybe not all day but I was Cleopatra (says Titi) the last couple of hours at least. I had my last visit with Titi which means my last Egyptian manicure, pedicure, and other things we can't mention...riiiiipppp! Anna Misreya delwati! Mom, Corinne, Jennifer...Titi says "hi and I love you" Catherine and I made one last pilgrimage to CAC. I read a few pages in my book and Catherine played and took some photos of the campus. Notice the red flame trees have lost all their blooms. Tracy and I spent the rest of the afternoon playing canasta. We decided to [View Full Entry]

The Streets of Maadi Africa » Egypt » Lower Egypt » Cairo
It's the weekend here and things are winding down for us. It has been a very relaxing day with coffee on the balcony and a couple of loads of laundry. Catherine had a play date with Melacca so Trevor and I walked (or scooted) her to Melacca's house. Today was a scorcher but the streets were quiet...Friday morning and Egyptians are still sleeping. We visited our old "circle" aka Mustafa Kamil Midan. When Catherine and Trevor were practically babies we would walk there everyday with Katy the dog and Mustafa our bowwab. Catherine and Trevor would run and run around that [View Full Entry]

What can I say? Lunch at The Four Seasons with Tracy and Carol. I am suprised we did not get kicked out. We cut up and had so much fun, not to mention the delicious food at the "Bella" Italian restaurant. Like that wasn't enough fun for one day, we plopped ourselves on the balcoona with pizza and beer for a relaxing evening. It's all coming to an end soon.... [View Full Entry]

Boxes, Boxes, Boxes! Africa » Egypt » Lower Egypt » Cairo
Was it yesterday or today??? The packers finised up all their wrapping and taping around 11:30 pm yesterday. The little truck came around 12am and you should have seen those Egyptians pile the boxes up! The 20' container was waiting outside Maadi since big trucks are not allowed in at all and the small delivery trucks can only come after 10:00pm. I have 176 pieces in all...what will I do with all that junk in The Woods? Jaye, I might have to get a booth at the garage sale this year! One thing is certain...I'M GLAD IT IS OVER!!!!!! I am blogging today, despite an excruciating day of packing yesterday. My mood is a little better now, even though I will go to 11 road 16 Maadi in just 30 minutes to supervise the last of the packing and loading of my container. I'm sure you will find the pics quite boring...just a bunch of expat wives brunching it up at a fancy villa which has just be totally renovated and turned into a botique hotel. I must admit, it is an enchanting place in the midst of dirty Cairo. Carol actually watched the work progress for the past 2 [View Full Entry]

"You're breaking my heart"..."oh, beautiful smile"..."come to my shop". How dare my nice Egyptian glass man close his shop in Maadi! With much persuasion I let Tracy and Carol drag me to the Khan-el-Khalili. Mostafa is a very nice man too, but to get to his shop one must endure Sleaze Alley. Jennifer, I thought of you and how much you love this type of flattery! At least no one tried to touch us thanks to Tracy's sneezing act every few steps...the Egyptians are terrified of the Swine Flu! Of course I spent way too much money at the shop, but [View Full Entry]

Nothing really exciting happened today. I went to the pharmacy and got everyone's drug supplies and some groceries at Kimo. Tracy, Carol, and I had lunch at Lucille's, which happens to serve the very best onion rings and cheese burgers. Some of you reading this can agree from experience! We then went to approve and pay for my new squatty table which will be delivered tonight. I LOVE it! It is truly a work of art. It was my turn for dinner preparation, but I will not say what I fixed because nobody will understand, but I did make mango ice [View Full Entry]

This day started off very slowly...2 cups of coffee and a good book on the balcoona. Catherine and Trevor went to the movies with MG (aka Dad) and it was off to the shops again for Tracy, Carol, and me. I was in search of black and white prints of the pyramids taken at the turn of the century. We went to the Maadi (not so) Grand Mall to the frame shop in the basement, but of course there were none of the ones I was looking for. Tracy and I have been dying to have a lemon juice and falafel [View Full Entry]

Today I took a long morning to recover from 3 days at the beach. After 2 cups of coffee on the balcoona and a catnap, I still didn’t have the energy to join Paul and Tracy for an outing to Carrefour. Thanks for the invite, Paul, but I have vowed NEVER to return there again and certainly not on a Friday! By 2:00pm Tracy and Carol were able to drag me out for more shopping. I needed more Egyptian Pounds, but the man at Thomas Cook said my $100’s were too dirty for him…. the NERVE! I told him that those [View Full Entry]

After another fun filled morning at the beach, we piled into the cars for our trek back to Cairo. Oh, but not before Tracy put up a fuss about the 5% food and beverage discount we are entitled to, being Apache employees. Tracy finished up and left me standing to pay the bill while she organized the cars. We saved a whole 10LE...$2. Tracy has officially been in Egypt too long! Another nostalgic journey down the desert highway...bittersweet. Then back in Cario just in time for rush hour traffic. Oh the sights and sounds of Cairo...horns honking, people dashing out into [View Full Entry]
