| 20th August 2008 mike allen | Lucille - From: Last post from Brazil Thanks Lucille. I hope you have a great two weeks also as school starts to loom in the distance! |

| 13th August 2008 mike allen | MIchael - From: Last post from Brazil Thanks for the message. It's great to hear from you. I thank you for your kind words as this aspect of the summer draws to a close for me. Already, the first hint of dawn from the new school year was starting to creep into the sky for me. It's going to be seem a mere heartbeat, and we'll all be back together again. I hope you've had some time for relaxation during what no doubt has been a hectic summer for you. All the best, mike |
| 13th August 2008 Michael Simon | Greetings from the Brooks! - From: Last post from Brazil Dear Mike, Eric, Kristin, Christina, and 'fellow travelers'-- Following all of your trips has been fascinating and educational. I truly feel as if I've learned so much about the world that I would never uncover on my own. Not only are your individual exploits interesting, but your connections, both through meeting up and through discussions of shared experiences, add an incredible depth to the experience. You can't imagine how exciting it is for me that four teachers from my school are out there experiencing the world in ways that most of us will never be brave enough to try. When we say that we like to have teachers who bring different experience and backgrounds to a school, we don't realize what the potential really is. What you're doing this summer adds such an amazing dimension to our community! |
| 13th August 2008 mike allen | Suze - From: Last post from Brazil I don't know about perfect. More lazy than perfect, to be honest! See you soon! mike |
| 13th August 2008 mike allen | Kristin - From: Last post from Brazil So is it true? 3rd grade? What about the others? Any other gossip? Anyway, I can't believe you would make fun of me when I was the one you secretly were plotting with to overthrow President Paci. Oops. Did I write that out loud? mike |
| 13th August 2008 mike allen | Lucille - From: Last post from Brazil Thanks for being there throughout Lucille. Heard any good gossip about next year? What about your job? I guess we'll all find out soon enough! mike |
| 13th August 2008 mike allen | Eric - From: Last post from Brazil Cheers mate. It's been fun. I really can see me coming back to Brazil. You know the Fantastic 4? . Who is Mr Fantastic, Invisible Girl, The Human Torch and The Thing in your little group I wonder? See you in Medford! You're gonna be buying... mike |
| 13th August 2008 ontheroadEandS | hey - From: Last post from Brazil glad that it all worked out. I completely understand what you mean about longer stays in places. it is amazing how in random parts of the world you can still find so much in common with people who live a completely different life. I am in Thailand with kristin, christina, courtney, and mekala. What a foursom! I'll give you all the details on that one later. It has been fun though, have a great time at the wedding and wish your brothers well for me. thought of you often and glad you made it through skin still attached, even if your wallet is a bit lighter for it. |
| 13th August 2008 Lucille | Last Post - From: Last post from Brazil Hi, Well enjoy your remaining days. I have thoroughly enjoyed following along with you on this journey. Thanks for sharing. Glad to hear that you have made some more real friends and some that you would really like to keep in contact with and return to visit in the future. This also enhances the journey. Safe travels home. Lucille |
| 13th August 2008 Howell | Raining again - From: Last post from Brazil Nothing really worthwhile to write. I'm just enjoying all your pictures with other people in them since you lost your camera. Eric reinacted your security precautions of bug checking before bed time. Don't feel bad. We made fun of Karen loads longer than you. See you soon. |
| 12th August 2008 Suze and Gia | Non summary - From: Last post from Brazil I think the non-summary is perfect. Your entire trip has been a nicely balanced flow...in and out of places and, as you said, in and out of the lives of the people you've met along the way. I've viewed the blog entries not as summaries of each segment, but as highlights - the stories that were foremost in your mind at that moment in time. It will be interesting for you to discover which stories stay as prominent as they are right now.....and which others will emerge from the depths of your memory later on, down the road. It's been a lovely read and we thank you for taking the time to share it all with us, so thoughtfully and eloquently. We've been 'with' you in spirit, all along the way and look forward to seeing you soon. Enjoy your last couple of days! xo, Suze and Gia |
| 11th August 2008 anonymous | Maze Inn - From: Landing on my feet again Hi, Still relaxing and enjoying the view, company, etc at the Maze Inn until you return. | 9th August 2008 Suze and Gia | Wow and just - From: Landing on my feet again wow. No words here, honestly. Yet another incredible turn to your adventure. Sounds fascinating and I'm sure you'll be making the very best of all that surrounds you. Have a wonderful time :) Stay safe and well and happy. xo, Suze and Gia |

| 9th August 2008 Lucille | what a spot!!!! - From: Landing on my feet again HI, Well it seems like you have landed in an amazing place. The view, scenery, its inhabitants, past and present to add to it all. Sounds all so amazing. enjoy and savor every moment. You seem very much relaxed and almost at home there. Thanks for sharing. | 9th August 2008 mike allen | Marion - From: Big City Great to hear from you. You must be starting to settle in by now, I would think. I'm going to chase down your blog after I finish here. How is the Portuguese coming? I've met some pretty excellent people on this trip and even though we only met briefly, I include you two in that category! Say hello to Laureline for me, and keep her away from the caiperinhas! |
| 9th August 2008 mike allen | Leila - From: Ho Hum Is that cool or what! I'm going to try to watch the long jump event if I can. Go, Arantxa, go!! Wasn't the opening ceremony spectacular today? I don't remember past ones, but this one I thought was a pretty impressive work of art! What do you think? Anyway, I hope you're having a fab summer! |
| 9th August 2008 mike allen | Suze and Gia - From: Ho Hum I'm intending on sking Elso to just send mr the memory cards, but I haven't heard from him for a while. He's probably working in the jungle. Hopefully! |
| 9th August 2008 mike allen | Clare, Hannah Dana - From: Ho Hum Hopefully, you see my latest blog about the fascinting turn of events. As for the camera, I'still waiting to hear back from Elso. Thanks for the other message you sent too. You're too kind! |
| 8th August 2008 Nams | hey!! - From: Big City Hello Mike, it's Marion. thanks for your advises, they were usefull... I promisse. Now we're living in an other place, but still in Olinda. we finally met real friends... those who don't count with the wallet, even if many of them are foreigners... Your latest pictures are great!! Pantanal seems really nice! and I wish you good continuation in this beautiful trip... It was a pleasure to meet even if it was short. If you want some news from Olinda, just ask. I create a blog too, i think it's travelblog/bloggers/Namast_he. muitos beijos ^^ Marion et Laureline |
| 7th August 2008 Leila Walker | - From: Ho Hum Hi Mike! Sounds like fun so far... Did you know Arantxa King is going to the Olympics? Long jump. Can you believe it???? Sorry about the camera, hope you have fun anyways. -Leila |
| 7th August 2008 Suze and Gia | The Camera - From: Ho Hum You've probably thought of all the options by now, but how about an SD card - you have a couple of extras, right? Could you get those to Elso (or to his home) and have him move the photos on the camera to the card? Then all he'd have to do is send the card in an envelope to you. He wouldn't even need the the camera's USB cable for that. Or....if he has a cable, he could put them on a flash drive for you? You'd be out the camera, but would still have all the media from it. Think any of those ideas would work out? |
| 7th August 2008 clare, Hannah and Dana | hello ho hum - From: Ho Hum Hi Michael! Must be hard to face all the "last meals" with fast friends. Perhaps instead of waiting for the bus - you should head to the boat docks - clear your head w/ lovely salt air, maybe hitch a boat ride... recapture the magic. Regarding your camera - forget the mail, how about asking Elso to ask a (trusted) tourist from a recent tour, who may be heading off Cuiba to bring it along to ... the mainland...Rio....Somerville, wherever they may be headed...? Too risky? Just a thought, although the "trusted" part may be more than you could expect! Clare |
| 7th August 2008 mike allen | Lucille - From: Ho Hum You´re right, of course. It´s myself I´m annoyed with. Some people lose their socks, or their boxers. I lose the most expensive and important thing in my pack! Now, where exactly is my passport again? |
| 7th August 2008 mike allen | Eric - Horse vs camel - From: Pantanal pics Tell it to my backside! Now I know why John Wayne walked the way he did! mike |
| 7th August 2008 ontheroadEandS | Stick to horse.... - From: Pantanal pics I guess the horseworked out better thanthe camel. Glad to hear it! |
| 6th August 2008 Lucille | Last Week - From: Ho Hum Hi I know you miss the camera, but do remember the memories, experiences and friends you've met along the way are worth much more than pictures. I know that you know that too but are really just upset to not have the camera or at this point being able to get it back. As for the money spent there although it has been expensive remember all that you have learned, experienced and will be bringing back to share and teach to others. It really is priceless. Easy for me to say I know. There really is no price on that. Enjoy your last week......do whatever you need and want to. Do not worry I will get you your coffee at Starbucks if needed when you get back Enjoy and stay safe. Lucille |
| 6th August 2008 Suze and Gia | Our latest obsession.... - From: Ho Hum is Arrested Development :) I bought the entire first season DVD set - watched about 1/2 of it, so far. Gia, being even more obsessed than I, hasn't stopped - she is close to finished with the whole set. And she plans on buying the second season soon. Haahaa....not quite as exciting as your summer, but our kind of fun. Yes, send your flight details whenever you can, I don't think I have them. Just think....soon enough the 3 Musketeers will be back in action.....music, movies and bad DVD's! We can all be broke together :) Talk with you soon, Suze |
| 6th August 2008 mike allen | Suze - From: Ho Hum I leave Brazil a week on Thursday. I arrive in Miami Friday AM but have to hang around Miami all day. I arrive in Boston in the evening. I don´t have the details to hand, but I´ll send them to you over the next few days if you don´t have them already. Hope all is well with you guys! See you soon |
| 6th August 2008 Suze and Gia | Camera - From: Ho Hum Hmmm. Yes, sending the camera from Brazil is expensive....I just checked on my own FEx discount and it's still pricey. Actually, Brazil is one of the most expensive locations to send mail to and from, in general. I remember some Brazilian pals always complaining about it. If I think of a simpler/cheaper option I'll let you know. As for your travel slowdown....I'll bet you'll find some interesting enough things to do. In my eyes, it sure looks all good. Which day do you actually leave to come back? |
| 6th August 2008 mike allen | Kristin - From: Pantanal pics Cheers. I think your pictures are pretty epic, too! |
| 6th August 2008 Howell | Mike A - From: Pantanal pics Hey, excellent picture taking!! |
| 5th August 2008 mike allen | pics from rio - From: Pantanal pics I see! As for pics, I don´t have a camera! See you soon. mike |
| 5th August 2008 Suze and Gia | Haahaa...no - From: Pantanal pics My counting wasn't in Portugese....it was Italian! I was answering the question posed in your blog entry....re: the hidden dynamic in the group photo :) Well, keep us posted on whatever is coming up....maybe you can post more photos of the sights in Rio, especially the beaches? (PG rated, of course!) Suze |
| 5th August 2008 mike allen | Eric - From: Pantanal safari Solid B+! mike |
| 5th August 2008 mike allen | Brenda - From: George of the jungle Part 2 If only I had my photos.... mike |
| 5th August 2008 mike allen | Lucille - From: Pantanal pics Thanks for the messages. I can already feel the summer closing in, with only one week left of this trip. We´ll be back at Starbucks before we know it! mike |
| 5th August 2008 mike allen | Suze and Gia - From: Pantanal pics Not right on the Portuguese, I´m afraid! I´ve just changed my flight, so I´m flying back to Rio tomorrow afternoon. Once I get there, I´ll see what I can do for a few days - there´s plenty to do in the City, to be honest - including the beach. As for the cute rodent, I ate one in the Amazon. Tasted like beef. If I had realized how cute tyhey werer, I don´t know! mike |
| 5th August 2008 mike allen | Amazon Lodges - From: George of the Jungle returns Hi Elizabeth. People I spoke to said the whole Juma area was more touristy than Mamori lake. I can´t say. I can say that Mamori lake was very beautiful. I would recommend going into the forest as much as possible rather than just staying in the lodges and doing the day trips. If you want to try Elso for yourself, he works with Claudio at the Hotel 10th July in Manaus. He is not in the guidebook yet, but two agencies that are the highest recommendations are also based in the Hotel, so you can shop around all three in about one hour! Have a great time in the jungle! mike |
| 5th August 2008 Elizabeth | Question about Lodge - From: George of the Jungle returns Hi Mike! Great post and it sounds like a super adventure. I am going with 3 friends to that area and we are trying to decide on the Lodge to stay. We are considering Juma Lodge or Malocas Lodge. Just wondering if you happened to stay in any of these, or if you have any recommendations. Sounds like you had a great guide, Elso! Thanks! Elizabeth |
| 4th August 2008 Suze and Gia | Uno, due, tre.... - From: Pantanal pics Am I correct? Anyway, sounds like a lovely time. So interesting about the parakeets and jabiri. I'm sure you'll find something amazing to do for the final leg of the trip :) So you've got about 10 or 11 days to go? Do you need to build in a little travel time too? Let me know the return plan when you've got it sorted out, okay? For now, stay safe, healthy and continued fun to you! xo, Suze |
| 4th August 2008 Suze and Gia | "Very tasty too"??? - From: Pantanal pics Wait....the cute tailess rodents that are dog-sized.....you ATE them? "Cutest rodents in the world".....for dinner? Sigh. Can't wait to read the rest of your entry, when it's up. Did you get your camera back yet? And hmmm. Looks like a run for new shoes will be in order when you get back, yes? |
| 4th August 2008 Lucille | Pantanal - From: Pantanal pics Hi, Well guess you made it back. Nice photos, waiting for your blog. Enjoy and stay safe. Lucille |

| 30th July 2008 mike allen | Adena - From: George of the jungle Part 2 If only I could. Currently my camera is stranded in Manaus. If I get it back, then sure thing! mike |
| 30th July 2008 Suze and Gia | My gosh... - From: George of the jungle Part 2 I honestly don't have any more words to comment these blog entires with....my lame superlatives couldn't possibly do justice to your magnificent adventure. How can you even come home after this? Seriously. Such an exciting life, with wonderous happenings and creatures all around. Thanks for sharing. Suze |
| 30th July 2008 Adena | Pictures of Cuiaba - From: George of the jungle Part 2 Would you be interested in posting your pictures online? I like this new travel guide called tripwolf. www.tripwolf.com They have Cuiaba...but no pics! http://www.tripwolf.com/en/guide/show/295091/Brazil/Cuiaba check it out if you like. |
| 30th July 2008 ontheroadEandS | Liverpool News - From: Lost and Found Don't know if you heard, they picked up Keane!! According to the BBC it is quite an acquisition. Now maybe they'll have a shot. |
| 30th July 2008 Marie | - From: Lost and Found hey Mike I'm so happy for you I felt your pain, pictures are very important to me I would have been devestated but I said a prayer that you would be lucky enough to have left it with Elso. You are a lucky manand you have obviously been lucky enough to have met some wonderful people. My belief is that the nice people in the world are the majority. You are helping me prove that theory. Marie |
| 29th July 2008 clare, Hannah and Dana | YAY - From: Lost and Found Fantastic news, Mike! That Elso - one in a million. Clare |
| 29th July 2008 Lucille | great!!!! - From: Lost and Found HI, glad to hear about the camera. I guess my good wishes and prayers that you would find it helped. great guy and friend that Elso is. I'm sure you will stop b ack and see thema nd get it befroe flying to rio. Enjoy the Pantanal. stay safe Lucille |
| 29th July 2008 Suze and Gia | Yay! - From: Lost and Found Great news! So happy to have a good turn happen. So...Gia was right. I told her I had copied the blog photos to disc (numbered & with captions) and she told me I'd feel like an idiot if the camera was found. That made me feel bad, to be honest. I was just trying to do a good thing. Well, I guess I am the idiot. If you'd like, you'll have a disc of 138 photos when you return...if not, I can just trash it. Glad it all turned out well. |
| 29th July 2008 mike allen | Eric - From: Into the Amazon Jungle How prophetic! mike |
| 29th July 2008 mike allen | Kat - From: Into the Amazon Jungle Sounds great. I hope you have a great time in Maine! mike |
| 29th July 2008 mike allen | Suze and Gia - From: George of the Jungle returns I took some great pictures of the forest. I wonder if I´ll ever get to see them again? mike |
| 29th July 2008 mike allen | Marie - From: George of the Jungle returns Thanks. There is a lot to tell, you´re right. Man, it was fun! mike |
| 29th July 2008 mike allen | Kristin - From: George of the Jungle returns Cheers. It´s nice to catch up with your adventures, too. Cambodia seems to have hit you in the heart. Anyone for Africa next year? mike |
| 29th July 2008 mike allen | Suze and Gia - From: Little disasters come back again If only I was! I´m so pissed off I can barely breathe. Thankfully, I´ve met some nice people and I might be able to rescue some of the photos from them: George, Dani, and Sherrira, even if Elso can´t help. I guess I got 140 on the blog, so it´s better than nothing! Thanks for your kind thoughts, mike |
| 29th July 2008 mike allen | Barbera - From: Little disasters come back again My words exactly! I was quite proud of some of the pictures, but the rest would have been great mermory aids for me. It´s funny: I used to always travel without a camera on principle. Now the principle seems to be fighting back! mike |
| 29th July 2008 mike allen | Lucille - From: Little disasters come back again Thanks for the thoughts. I´ve got my fingers crossed, but I fear the worst! I´m scared to check my email! mike |
| 29th July 2008 mike allen | Eric - From: George of the Jungle returns It was fantastic, mate - adventures galore - lost in canals at night, giant spiders, snakes, monkeys, coatis, anteaters, harpy eagles, and, more than that, the stunning, majesterial forest buzzing with a sound that I now think was probably the origin of music! mike |
| 29th July 2008 mike allen | Eric - From: Little disasters come back again I only wish I was joking. Last night, I thought I was dreaming, but it turns out to be true. I spent all yesterday cursing myself up and down. Today it´s only once every five minutes! Thanks for the thoughts, dude. Are you meeting up with Kristin and Cristina? mike |
| 29th July 2008 mike allen | Clare, Hannah, Dana - From: Little disasters come back again Cheers. I feel a bit better today, acceptance wise, but am scared to check my email in case Elso says it´s not there! I´ve met some neat people here in Cuiaba now, so that helps too! See you soon. mike |
| 29th July 2008 clare, Hannah and Dana | Poop! - From: Little disasters come back again Oh, Mike - I can't believe the news about your camera! You know me, ever the optimist - I hold out hope that your trusted guide/friend has it ... and that it will be seen again... enough sticky flypaper for you, I'd say. Cheers, Clare (& Co.) |
| 29th July 2008 ontheroadEandS | Are you freaking serious?!?! - From: Little disasters come back again This is a huge ooprtunity for me but even I can not take a shot here. Grim. Grim dogger. I think the word you used 2 years ago was marose(sp). I can truely say I am sorry and know the feeling. The only thing I can possibly offer is this... "did you go on this trip for the pictures or did you go for the adventure and experience of it all?" I know the answer already, but you were right when you said this and it must hold true even today. We both know that those pictures only tell such a small part of the story that they would only lead others astray. The real story is not in the pictures but in the people and places which will forever be entwined. It sounds like you have come across many good people. F the pictures. They will never do justice to your minds eye. |
| 29th July 2008 ontheroadEandS | Nice! - From: George of the Jungle returns I think that is all I will say. Having a great time but that is the one thing I was envious of from day 1! As you know, there really is no comment for such things. Just wanted to say hi. Even I was counting the days. Hated to think the Amazon went all Dogon on you! |
| 29th July 2008 Lucille | disaster - From: Little disasters come back again HI, sorry to hear about your camers. I know you must be very pissed off right now. Losing allthe photos and video of your amazing adventures is awful but remember that you ,personally have all the experiences, memories, new friends etc to help you remember always. who knows maybe youleft it all Elso's house?? will you be able to get in contact with him? I will send some prayers and wishes that he has it and you will be able to somehow get it. Well go get another camera, you must have it for when you get to the Pantanal. You'd beent alking about that part of the trip alot before hand too. |
| 29th July 2008 Lucille | JUngle - From: George of the Jungle returns Hey George, Glad to finally here from you. It sounds so amazing and so so worth it. Very happy to hear about your adventures and that you survived it all. will be waiting for the next installment of your trip and more photos. enjoy and stay safe Lucille |
| 29th July 2008 barb | - From: Little disasters come back again aaaaaaaaaahhhhh!#!#%*! I know how badly you feel but don't beat your self up. You may get it back and even if you don't, at least it's all in your head. It's really more our (the spectators) loss because I did so want to see from your eyes. |
| 28th July 2008 Suze and Gia | Nooooo...... - From: Little disasters come back again I was hoping you were playing a grand prank on us here (the queen of reality TV watching too many reruns of MTV's Punk'd). I'm sorry. Let's hope it is safe and sound with your friend Elso. My own karma isn't much to write home about right now, so I'm afraid I don't have any of that 'good' stuff to send you. I'll cross fingers instead. But you said it....having a brilliant time, meeting amazing people and doing wonderful things. And you are safe and healthy. That's really what counts most, isn't it? I'll put these blog photos on a disc for you - not quite the same, I know. Good luck. And chin up...more brilliant times coming up! xo, Suze |
| 28th July 2008 Kristin | George - From: George of the Jungle returns Hey George of the Jungle. I was getting nervous. Glad you survived! |
| 28th July 2008 Marie | Welcome back - From: George of the Jungle returns Couldn't wait for more and as usual I am not disappointed Madison was impressed as I was that you got to hold a sloth. Sounds like you had alot of fun can't wait for more..Sorry to be greedy, but it sounds like there is alot more to be had. Stay safe |
| 27th July 2008 Suze and Gia | Mysterious flooded forest photo - From: George of the Jungle returns Now that is a cool picture. (yes, 2 consecutive comments. like i said....a real life has escaped me). How on earth does a person come home after such an adventure? I'd be afraid that I....just wouldn't. Ever. Suze |

| 18th July 2008 mike allen | Dani - Anamcara - From: Big City Hey, it´s the Spanish philosopher. I was just singing, ´Canta, LLora, Rie´ this morning. Glad you had another great experience. There is definitely something pretty special about Brasil don´t you think? If only it wasn´t so expensive! I hope we keep in touch, too. I´m going to keep asking you to work on, ´Thus spake Dani`! When do you see your new friend in Salvador? Holy cow, by the time I get back from the jungle, you might be in the company of the english couple you spoke about. I wonder if he will be doing the dishes like last time? I´ll write again when I get back. mike |
| 18th July 2008 Suze and Gia | Good luck! - From: Into the Amazon Jungle Good luck and stay safe - sounds like you've got an incredible journey ahead!!! You will be in our thoughts and in our hearts, the entire time, Michael. Have fun :) Until the next installment...... xo, Suze and Gia |
| 18th July 2008 Dani | Anum Cara - From: Big City Hello my soul mate, the spanish philosopher (jajaja) is here finally, join your blog. Sorry if I haven´t written to you until now but I have been doing a trekking in Chapada Diamantina and of course I had no internet. I have to say the trkking has been amazing. That place is really beautiful. Nice paths, funny adventures and incredible waterfalls. I did a 45 m rappel down a waterfall, crossing a huge rainbow and finally ending in to a deep lake. I didin´t need to pay for it, the guides told me that I´m a mountain free spirit and thay wanted to let me doing it as a present (normally they charge 100 reais). The small village Lencois is such a charming place. Narrow streets, colourful houses, rasta men walking around.... I will keep it in my heart. Now I´m in Valença, south of Salvador, a crowed fisherman villa. I´m waiting to get a boat to go to boipeba, a island wich seems to be another paradise. I really hope we keep in touch because really the days we spent together in our own heaven in noronha are still really deep in my soul. The memory of those days still makes my heart smile. You made me think about many things and I´m sure all of that will come out in some form. I definitly need to put all my writtings in to something or just to make something with all this crazy words that cross my mind every single second. Well, I wish all the best for your days in the amazon. Please talk to the mother earth about me, she knows I would love to be there. Take care my friend. Dani |
| 18th July 2008 Suze and Gia | - From: Big City Sounds like you've made a good start in your new area. We can send over some insanely humid weather, if you'd like....it's still hot and uncomfortable here. Saturday's prediction is 96 degrees. We await more stellar commentary as you begin this leg of your journey...and pictures, of course! Wow....I'm still shocked by the high costs there - but maybe, when all is said and done, you won't have blown your budget as much as you think you have? Take care, stay safe and healthy! xo, Suze and Gia |
| 17th July 2008 mike allen | Captain - From: Olinda again Cheers Cap. So far so good! I like Manaus. Take it easy on those bikes - I know what you´re like when you get with Dave and BDog! mike |
| 16th July 2008 captain | the real thing - From: Olinda again Sounds like Brasil has been good to you so far. Maybe you get more opportunities to open the place up becaue you are on your own? We (Diane Max Charlie and Me) are off to the Gower camping this weekend. Looks like there will be a weather window for us. I'm taking the biking and then heading up the west coast with Dave, Graham, BDog (aka the not- so-greasy truckers). Good luck in Manaus! Capt. |
| 16th July 2008 mike allen | Suze and Gia - From: Olinda again Internet and Amazon - It should be ok in Manaus, but outside the city, who knows? One thing I do know, I´ll be heading into oppressive heat and humidity tomorrow, so we will be sharing that at least! Keep it going Green thumb! mike |
| 16th July 2008 Suze and Gia | - From: Olinda again Gosh, home is going to seem utterly dull and boring, I fear. You've been immersed in such beauty and peace on your island, this place is sure to be a drag, eh? Would love to say we look forward to your writings while in the Amazon, but I'm suspecting that you won't have easy internet access, if any. Correct? Of course, we wish you a very safe trip. Oh by the way....you aren't missing much here, unless you're fond of oppressively humid and hot weather which is making everyone a bit grumpy. Sigh. I love summer but we need a break from this stuff! xoxo, Suze (ps....plants are ok. i think. i'm determined to develop some gardening skills now. maybe one day i'll have my own live plants. haahaa....as Gia laughs) |
| 16th July 2008 mike allen | Yacht - From: Last Day - or is it? No dude, this thing is way bigger - it sleeps 10 comfortably below decks. Bloody fantastic spot of luck, truth be told. Back in Olinda, with my party going ways turning me into a minor celebrity, I feel at home. Tomorrow though it´s another new world. Glad to hear you´re having a great time. What are you doing after Steph leaves? mike |
| 16th July 2008 mike allen | Marie - From: Last Day - or is it? I wish! mike |
| 16th July 2008 mike allen | Joey - From: Sad day Thanks Joey. I am having a brilliant summer besides that. What about you? mike |
| 16th July 2008 mike allen | Rachel and Lizzy - From: Sad day Thanks for the kind message, girls. It was a bit rough not being there, but in the end, what can you do? Just keep moving till your turn comes! See you in the fall! mike |
| 16th July 2008 mike allen | Clare - From: Sailing Got a plan? mike |
| 16th July 2008 mike allen | Eric and Steph - From: What Day is it? I tried uploading the videos but it was next door to impossible so I gave up. Glad you´re having a great time on the Gilli´s - Almitra and I did too - the snorkelling was bloody excellent. AS for the orange cat - me too! Three of them starting hanging around Your Way, new visitors to the cat menagerie they have there. Finally, it´s not lazy to be having a good time with your girlfriend on beautiful beaches half a World away from home: it´s romantic! mike |
| 16th July 2008 mike allen | Barbera - From: Requiem Thanks Barb. On a more positive note, you would LOVE Fernando de Noronha. Love it, I say, love it! mike |
| 16th July 2008 mike allen | Suze and Gia - From: What Day is it? Interesting indeed, and constantly changing and evolving. Here I am perched on the edge of the next chapter. Who knows what it will bring? Great to be alive, eh? mike |
| 16th July 2008 mike allen | Karen - From: What Day is it? Why don´t you do a Vineyard blog. I think the Vineyard is one of the greatest places on Earth. So tell us a few of your stories! mike |
| 16th July 2008 mike allen | Kristin - From: What Day is it? You´re loving it aren´t you? I can tell! mike |
| 16th July 2008 ontheroadEandS | Wow - From: Last Day - or is it? Well, I must say I am a bit envious. Don't get me wrong, Steph and I have adjusted to island life quite well. We can't seem to leave the Gilis. Ever so quiet Meno and now Air (the food choices on Meno were getting old as there were so few facilities). As we crossed the channel between the islands we saw a huge Ozzy Yacht, and now there are 2 perched just off the shore here. Tell me, anything like the graceful swans we used to tool through the harbor in? lol Hope the ticket changing worked out and hope the amazon is as mind blowing as we thought it would be. We have a couple days left before heading to Ubud for souvenirs and then a couple days in a fat man's resort. It was all inclusive and pricey, but the lush in me is sure we will get our money's worth!! Where to go, what to do for 2 1/2 days...of to figure it out! The snorkeling and scuba here is truly phenomenal! Steph says hello and I think glowed a bit when she saw your boat. peace out |
| 16th July 2008 Marie | amazing - From: Last Day - or is it? Mike sounds and looks amazing I'd stay an extra week never mind an extra day. :) Enjoy. Can't wait for more. Marie |
| 15th July 2008 Joey | - From: Sad day Her Mr. Allen, Lizzy just told me about Boy and I'm really sorry. I know what it feels like to lose a pet. I hope you're having a good summer besides that, though. |
| 15th July 2008 Rachel and Lizzy | :[ - From: Sad day We are so sorry about Boy. Though I (Rachel) have only seen him a couple times and Lizzy hasn't ever, we both know what it feels like to lose a pet. When Lizzy's dog, one she had had her whole life, died, she wasn't there either. It must be hard to think that you couldn't have been there to spend time with him beforehand. :[ |
| 15th July 2008 Clare, Hannah and Dana | ahoy! - From: Sailing What a beautiful vessel! It IS like another world out there - makes you wonder why we don't all live on board! Enjoy! |
| 15th July 2008 ontheroadEandS | We are reading - From: What Day is it? Mike, as you know this traveling business leaves you with so much to do each day that it is sometimes hard to find time to write. Can't wait to hear the new songs. You could probably upload those as videos too. We are now on Gili Air and hanging for a few days. I don't think Komodo is in the cards though. We have gone totally island. You know, lay around, snorkel, lay around, read, lay around, snorkel...it is so tough. BTW, at dinner last night, broke down and had pizza, we had the company of an orange cat. He kept jumping on people's chairs trying to get their food. I wonder if life number 2 has kicked in for the boy. I see orange cats everywhere. Maybe he's making the rounds. Very relaxing time we're having. Maybe too relaxing, gonna be hard to break the lazy habbit! |
| 15th July 2008 Barbara | boyo - From: Requiem on no...not boyo I'm so sad |
| 14th July 2008 Suze and Gia | - From: What Day is it? Y'know....I was just thinking, Michael. It's interesting how things work, in terms of fate and such. This summer trip is unusual compared to most all that you've done, in that there will be an earlier return - a short break of home and then a second trip revolving around your family. Given the loss of Boy, as well as your mixed feelings about being there - it seems that the structure of your summer ended up being that way for a reason. I think the reconnecting with your home base and with friends and family will be comforting and a positive turn. Just so interesting how life pans out, isn't it?? |
| 14th July 2008 karen | It's Monday! - From: What Day is it? Ha-Ha! I think it is very funny that all of you have "coordinated" your blog titles! I am having a great time reading about your adventures. As it happens, it is raining here on Martha's Vineyard as well. I am excited by the turn in weather though, I am beached out! Can't wait to hear more about your adventures! |
| 14th July 2008 Kristin | Hello - From: What Day is it? How in the world do you sit down and write so well being so busy? My eyelids are about to shut and the thought of getting my USB cable upstairs to get pictures on here is unthinkable. Off to Cambodia tomorrow... by bus (yikes). |
| 14th July 2008 mike allen | Suze - From: What Day is it? Yeah. I´m feeling a bit guilty about just hanging around playing music for three days. Three days without the beach, without taking advantage of the island´s beauty at all. Thing is, I´ll be out of here in two days now: my Portuguese has gone backwards, I´m not even tanned, and I´ve not had anything to to do with Brazilian culture! To be honest, it´s not been an ideal trip! I´m trying to make the most of it, but my heart is not really 100% here. Plus, it´s costing an absolute fortune! Not complaining, you understand, just explaining! mike |
| 14th July 2008 mike allen | Gia - From: What Day is it? Cheers, G. The Anam Cara story is rather odd, but underneath the oddity, it´s a sort of optimistic, if twisted, love song. It´s now gone up to 14 songs. I played them all together last night to see how they felt as a single piece. By the end, I was croaking like a bullfrog! mike |
| 14th July 2008 mike allen | Lucille 2 - From: What Day is it? I don´t believe so much in better or worse, just different. I bet your beach is lovely. As for this one, it´s been chucking it down for three days, so not so lovely in the rain, just like anywhere else! mike |
| 14th July 2008 mike allen | Lucille - From: Eleven songs You should do a blog too! Why not, eh? I´d love to read what´s up. C´mon Lucille, do it! You know you want to! mike |
| 14th July 2008 mike allen | Marie and Madison - From: Sad day Thanks guys. mike |
| 14th July 2008 mike allen | Denise - From: Underwater pics :) (: |
| 14th July 2008 mike allen | Suze and Gia - From: Underwater pics Well, are you sending it then, or what? Jeez. I´m already reading as slow as possible. I need stuff to read! mike |
| 13th July 2008 Suze and Gia | - From: What Day is it? Hey Michael!! Well, it sure sounds like you are doing just about everything you love to do, which is great! Making music, hanging with good pals, watching BBC and eating familiar food....add to that all the fabulous outdoor activities - what an ideal trip it has been! I'll be looking forward to hearing the songs when you return....seems like this trip was the inspiration that got the creative juices flowing again - awesome :) Keep it coming - it's been fun to find new entries every day, each one is always a nice surprise to read! Stay safe and healthy and have fun!! xo, Suze |
| 13th July 2008 Suze and Gia | - From: What Day is it? Hey Mike! Good to hear things are brightening up for you. The music concept sounds very interesting and I can't wait to see what it transforms into once you've given it a medium back home. The pictures from underwater are really beautiful and some of the fish looked incredible in the pictures alone! Can't wait to hear more of your adventures!! love, Gia ^_^ |
| 13th July 2008 Lucille | What Day Is it? - From: What Day is it? Hi, Well you've joined your buddies now. You gave me a chuckle with your title. I hope you g et some more snorkeling and beach time in before you leave the island. Great to follow along with all of you world travelers. I'm just going for my walk on my beach and for some relaxation today. Of course not as faboulous as your beach/island but its mine. Enjoy and thinking of you as you travel. Keep up the blog. Love the photos so far. Want more. Lucille |
| 13th July 2008 Lucille | Rock Opera - From: Eleven songs Hi, Glad to hear about your great day with your new freinds. Although it wasn't on a gorgeous beach it is part of the trip and another one of your passions. So it was a great day . Willbe looking forward to the Rock Opera when you return. A day like this jsut helps to rejuvenate you and look forward to your next day. Sorry to hear that your new friend, Dani is leaving but I'm sure you will visit him again. Enjoy and safe travels. By the way keeping up with my friends blogs.... you , Eric and Steph, and Krisitin is keeping me busy between work and some rest. It is giving my another vacation to many places too. Lucille |
| 12th July 2008 Marie | Sorry - From: Sad day Mike we've been away since Monday and I was hoping to come back to better news. We are so sorry for your loss and your distance from it. Madison and I were very sad to hear the news. Hope you are doing ok and Boy is at peace and you are happy with your memories of him. |
| 11th July 2008 Denise | Parrot fish - From: Underwater pics The photos are wonderful, Michael. (Is that a Mona Lisa smile on the parrot fish?) |
| 11th July 2008 Suze and Gia | Wow! - From: Underwater pics Positively gorgeous! The colors are amazingly brilliant and beautiful. Thanks for sharing a glimpse of what you've had the good fortune to see on the island! Thanks for the encouragement to write and tell you about what's been going on with us here....you're a brave soul want to read the plodding prose I usually turn out! It's no way near as spectacular as what you've been writing about, but it's special to Gia and I, nonetheless :) Take care - 'till next time! xo, Suze and Gia |
| 11th July 2008 mike allen | Brenda Andrew - From: Sad day Thanks guys. I appreciate it. mike |
| 11th July 2008 mike allen | Jill Peter Kathryn - From: Sad day I might well take you up on that. Ralphie sounds like a lovely cat! mike |
| 11th July 2008 mike allen | Eric - From: Sad day The cat never liked you either. When he used to abandon me to try to sit on your lap, he was plotting evisceration. When he used to run up to meet your car every time you came over it was pure accident. It wasn´t that he liked you, dammit, it wasn´t! |
| 11th July 2008 mike allen | Kristin - From: Sad day Thanks Kristin. It´s nice to know you´re there! mike |
| 11th July 2008 mike allen | Vicki and Leila - From: Sad day Thanks so much. You´re right about the beauty! mike |
| 11th July 2008 mike allen | Janet and Jason - From: Sad day Thanks for the message. It´s definitely a bit rough. But I´m also on a sort of paradise island, so that helps, as you can imagine. Jason, you would freak out if you saw all these fish! mike |
| 11th July 2008 mike allen | Captain - From: Sad day Cheers Cap. See you in August hopefully! mike |
| 11th July 2008 mike allen | Clare, Dana, Hannah - From: Sad day What a lovely way to phrase it. Clare, you´re a poet! Cheers, mike |
| 11th July 2008 mike allen | Karen - From: Requiem Thanks Karen. He was a special furry friend. What a tail! mike |
| 11th July 2008 mike allen | Suze - From: Requiem Thanks for the message. The new friends are interesting, it´s true. I hope you have fun at the weekend with whatever it is. Why don´t you write and tell me the news, I love to read what everyone´s up to when I´m far away. mike |
| 11th July 2008 mike allen | Callie - From: Requiem Thanks Callie. It´s a big drag for sure. Boy lived a long and happy life. That´s what I say to myself when I start to feel sad. mike |
| 11th July 2008 mike allen | Cape Ann - From: Spotted eagle ray day I love it out on Cape Ann. I´ve never tried snorkelling there, but it sounds like I should! Definitely yes on the caiperinha front! mike |
| 11th July 2008 mike allen | Boy - From: Requiem Thanks for the message Lucille. I appreciate your thoughts. The trip isn´t bad, despite the bad news - this island is pretty darn special, I have to say! Cheers, mike |
| 11th July 2008 mike allen | Lizards and rodents - From: Spotted eagle ray day The rodents are extremely cute and extremely agile, about the size of rabbits. They leap around the rocks and cliff faces with incredible speed. The lizard in the pic is about three foot long. I guess they grow quite a bit bigger. mike |
| 11th July 2008 Suze and Gia | Question? - From: Spotted eagle ray day About how big are the lizards that eat funny little tailess rodents? And how big are the funny little tailess rodents? In the photo, the latter look like bunnies with no tails and small pointy ears. They appear to be adorable and not very rodent-like at all. (although I can't see their teeth....which could possibly be rodent-like scary). Cute....or no? just wondering.... suze |
| 11th July 2008 Lucille | Boy - From: Requiem Mike, So sorry to hear about Boy. I know it must be hard not having been there but maybe that happened for a reson too. You will grieve now and then more once home and he is no longer there. That is the natural process. apparently you have many concerned friends who care about you and Boy and will be there to support you as needed, including myself. As for the trip and you new found friends and cats.they sound great and like a good part of the trip that you needed now. The snorkeling sounds absolutely amazing. Enhoy as you so truly deserve to. Keep on updating with tales of your ventures, etc. Have fun and stay safe. Thinking of you LUcille |
| 11th July 2008 Vicki and Leila | - From: Spotted eagle ray day Oh ... the caipirinhas! We still have some very special cachaca we brought back with us those many years ago; perhaps we'll share. Gorgeous descriptions of the sea and sea life along with the photos...we're glad you're sharing those. And you found guitars to boot! We spent a bit of time on Sunday at our favorite spot on the ocean on Cape Ann where the water is also quite clear but still chilled a la New England. Some divers and snorkelers caught themselves plentiful meals of flounder, lobsters, and mussels. Don tried to fish out our dinner too, but no creature took the bait...until next time. |
| 10th July 2008 callie | i am so sorry - From: Requiem mr allen, i am so sorry! your poor boy. it made me cry and i bet im not the only one. i feel horrible for you. callie |
| 10th July 2008 Suze and Gia | purple blanket.... - From: Requiem Well, burgundy, but no matter....oh yes, the famous blanket will be remembered! I will never forget the look on Gia's face when she saw it all the first time. On another occasion I took a video - but since getting a new phone, it's lost now. Pity - it was hysterically funny! Lovely words, Michael. Your new friends sound interesting - glad you've found some good people to share those beautiful surroundings with. Well....excitement awaits G and I this weekend! Ok...she is excited and I am both excited and nervous! Some amazing things have happened this week and they will all culminate over the weekend. A first for Gia in all her 15 years. And pretty much me too. Will have to write you and tell you the news - if I can possibly pen something short (though that could be impossible - you know me, queen of the blah, blah :) For now...stay safe and healthy! Keep the photos coming - they are incredible! xo, Suze |
| 9th July 2008 karen | - From: Requiem Mike, I am so sorry to hear about Boy. He seemed like a special friend. |
| 9th July 2008 Clare, Hannah and Dana | Boy... - From: Sad day We are all so sorry, Mike. Boy is joining lots of loved Gallup creatures (and many more) who can now frolic freely in that meadow of our memories. Cheers to your Boy, Clare & Company |
| 9th July 2008 Captain | Boy - From: Sad day So sorry to hear about the boy. It's tougher dealing with these things when you are a long way from home. Know how that feels. Take care captwoojcharliemax |
| 9th July 2008 janet and jason | :( - From: Sad day Michael, we are so truly sorry to hear that..... I can imagine how devastated you must be. It is clear Boy was a very loved being and that's the most we can really do for our pets but they do become family and it makes the loss that much harder. Hope you are ok. Hang in there. |
| 9th July 2008 Vicki and Leila | - From: Sad day We are so so sorry to hear about Boy. It must feel awful to be far away at this time. Judging by some of the photos and knowing what we found in Brazil, there is beauty all around to maybe help remind you of what Boy brought to your life. We're thinking of you, and Almitra as well, and hope the remainder of your travels go well. |
| 9th July 2008 Howell | - From: Sad day :( |
| 9th July 2008 ontheroadEandS | Ugh... - From: Sad day What can I say, I never liked that cat! Stephanie on the other hand is lamenting. Buck up little camper! Just in case, I feel I should say that I hope the sarcasm comes through in that statement. Off to Gunung Batur for us! While there we will sacrifice a small French child for the Boy at the sacred temple there. |
| 9th July 2008 Jill, Peter & Kathryn | - From: Sad day Mike, We have shed a tear for you and Boy. Any time you need a feline companion, we'll be glad to lend Ralphie. He loves his lap time. Stay strong and know that we are keeping you in our thoughts. Glad you have Nameless close by to comfort you. Jill, Peter & Kathryn |
| 9th July 2008 Brenda | - From: Sad day Mike. We are so very sorry for your loss. We are thinking of you during this difficult time and our thoughts and prayers are with you. Love, Brenda and Andrew |
| 8th July 2008 suze and gia | - From: Sad day We are so sorry, Michael. Boy was very special to us and we will truly miss him. Our hearts go out to you and to Almitra....we know all the good memories will be remembered fondly and bring a smile each time they are recalled. If there is anything we can do, please give a shout, ok? Stay strong and know how much you are being thought about. love, Suze and Gia |
| 8th July 2008 the captain | - From: Boy Sorry to hear of The Boy's misadventures. Here's hoping he still has some spunk left in him! Capt. |
| 8th July 2008 Suze and Gia | - From: Boy I couldn't agree more with Lucille's comment. Your new little friend, Nameless, was sent to you for a reason. I hope he has given you comfort these last couple of days and even provided some amusing kitty antics for a smile. We all await an update on Boy's condition.....he's such a tough cookie, I'm pulling for him all the way. Until then....be positive, be well... xo, Suze |
| 8th July 2008 Janet | hang in there - From: Boy Hi Mike, so sorry to hear about the cat and I do know how you feel. As bad as it sounds, it seems like it could have been a lot worse and I'm sure he is a trooper. They really do have 9 lives! Hope to hear some good news about him soon. Glad to hear for the most part your experiences have been good ones. Janet |
| 8th July 2008 PDPaci | Grim - From: Boy Grim dude....so grim. Well we'll all hope for the best. Sounds like the islands are treating you right. I must say, haven't found that here...yet. Volcano climbing in 2 days, do it yourself rice paddy treks for now. The islands are calling my name, i hear them in the night. Good bye wonderland reprise? |
| 8th July 2008 Lucille | Boy - From: Boy HI, so sorry to hear about your cat. It is only understandable and normal for you to feel the way that you do. He is part of your life and your family. I will wish for the best for him and you as well. Your newfound friend, the cat was sent for a purpose. I'm sure it makes you feel both good and then bad when you think of Boy and missing him. Keep us posted about Boy...you and him are in my thoughts. Now as for your trip, your new found friends sound very nice, and I know they are now on there way but I know you will find others. You know that happens when traveling always. Have been following on the blog but problem with my computer here in Maine for a couple of days so was unable to read and send comments as you wrote. I caught up tonight. Love all the photos, some very amazing beaches and scenes. Continue to experience it all and enjoy and stay safe. Look forward to continuing to follow along with you. Lucille |
| 8th July 2008 Howell | Hey again! - From: Boy Any news yet? Glad you approved of my packing list. Is there anything I can get rid of? Today was a typical hot and humid New England day and all I kept thinking about is having a back pack stuck like glue to me and wanting to just ditch the entire thing. NE hot will be nothing compared to SEA hot. No word on school or grade yet, but I'm feeling more optimistic than ever. I'll keep you posted! BTW, can't believe all of your snorkeling. I'd rather jump out of a plane any day than be in the ocean swimming with all those sea monsters. No way!! |
| 8th July 2008 kathryn | About your message. - From: Boy Mike, Technically speaking I dont know how it feels yet. It's Only the SEVENTH!!!!!! Kat |
| 8th July 2008 kathryn | I'm so sorry - From: Boy Mike, I am so sorry I do hope Boy is ok. Keep faith I did and Ralphie came home alright. My thoughts and prayers are with him. Kathryn |
| 8th July 2008 Gia | - From: Boy Hey Mike, it's Gia. I'm really sorry about Boy-o's condition, and I was pretty shocked when I heard. My first response was, "Don't cats land on their paws?!" That's when I realized that my appreciation for the Boy actually goes a bit deeper than it may appear. Even as he's been at his vacation home, your apartment and the nearby streets seem more vacant without his cosy presence. I have always the best hope in his recovery, and know that I am keeping the dearie beastie in mind!! -g- |
| 7th July 2008 Clare Gallup | Boy... - From: Boy Dear Mike, What can I say? We're so sad to hear your news about Boy. We hope and pray his condition improves.... poor brave tree warrior. Let us know if there's anything in the world we can do to help - in any way. In the meantime, love up that Nameless one... Clare and Family |
| 7th July 2008 Marie | in our thoughts - From: Boy Hey Mike just a quick note to say you're in our thoughts. Fellow animal lovers here. We have 2 cats and one has a seizure disorder which we have invested alot of time and vet visits to keep alive so we know "it isn't just a cat" and we feel for you being so far away. Keep the faith. The King-Giannino Clan |
| 7th July 2008 mike allen | Kristin - From: Boy Thanks for the message. I really appreciate it. You must be getting pretty excited, eh? Can´t wait for your blog to get going properly! BTW 1, I thought your packing list seemed pretty cool. BTW 2, Do you know which school you´re all at yet for next year? mike |
| 7th July 2008 mike allen | Jill Peter and Kathryn - From: Boy Thanks for the message. It makes me feel a bit better. Happy birthday to Kat! How does it feel to be old like us, eh? |
| 7th July 2008 mike allen | Brenda - From: Boy Thanks Brenda. I really appreciate your message. I´m anxiously waiting for news right now. Fingers crossed! mike |
| 7th July 2008 Brenda | Boy - From: Boy Mike. I am so sorry to hear about Boy's accident. I know exactly how you feel- and he is not "just a cat" as we well know. In fact Andrew and I loved him so much we "borrowed" his name when we got Beasley Boy. It's hard being away when he's sick- but it sounds like he's in good hands and well cared for. I will hope for the best for him, but know how you're feeling (I was away from Chicken when he died, 3 days before Opening Ceremonies). I'm glad Nameless is there to keep you company, he sounds like a great companion. All my best, Brenda |
| 7th July 2008 Jill, Peter & Kathryn | Boy - From: Boy Hi Mike, We totally understand your feelings for Boy and we are sending him and you our best positive healing energy. We once lost our beloved cat for 7 weeks in Maine and miraculously he was returned to us. We are loving keeping up with you on the flypaper. At least we can be armchair adventurers! Jill,Peter & Kathryn (FYI tomorrow is Kathryn's 11th B'day) |
| 7th July 2008 Howell | - From: Boy Oh Mike, I'm so sorry. Make sure to keep us updated. ~Kristin |
| 7th July 2008 suze and gia | We're so sorry.... - From: Boy Michael...this comment comes after our prior mail and my speaking with Almitra yesterday. I've had overnight to think and it was with surprise that I read your own observation about making friends with a cat where you are now....that is what kept coming into my mind over the course of last evening. I'm so sad to hear what happened and wish I could offer some insightful words....somehow none I can think of seem articulate enough. We've always been happy to take care of the Boy in your absence and over the years have become his friend. I remember the first time he came right to my car door to greet us when we pulled up in front of your house - now *that* was when I knew the friendship had firmly taken hold! Today, Gia and I will send out good thoughts to the Boy - we hope things will take a positive turn and that he soon be on his way to recovery. We're glad we got to see him when we took him with you out to his summer 'vacation' spot. Michael....take care - I know how hard this is, being away when the Boy is ill. Stay positive and we will too... xo, Suze and Gia |
| 7th July 2008 mike allen | Sandy - From: Another great day in the water Glad you like what you read so far. I´ve had a bit of a problem crop up from home with my cat and that´s absorbing all my thoughts today, but I have met an interesting chap, a Scot, who was brought up in Chester a town 20 miles from where I grew up. His name is George: he´s an engineer, dolphin enthusiast, and he lives next door here and has lived here for 20 years! Hope the buggy ride was fun and that you´re having a great time too! mike |
| 7th July 2008 sandy | - From: Alone again, Naturally (70´s pop reference) Hey! You stole my thing: making a song out of every word or sentence that comes along :-)) But thanks.... now I´ll have that song in my head for the rest of the day.... Good to hear you had a wonderful day too yesterday. Today here in Natal it´s a bit cloudy and raining drizzly (is that a word?) Will go to downtown Natal then to see the fort and some of the shops. A good a day as any to do that, don´t you think? Tomorrow buggy ride along the dunes! Yeah!!! Have fun Mike. I´ll read more when I have the time. Found any new friends yet? Ciao! |
| 7th July 2008 Sandy | Sweet!! - From: Another great day in the water Dear Mike, just read your blog (for the first time ever!! Haha, you know how stupid I am concerning this stuff) and it´s so sweet how you talk about us/me.... thank you for that! Sorry to read that the day ended in so much rain.... I think we got that during the night... But the next day was beautiful at the beach! Okay, gonna read what YOU did yesterday right now, so I´ll know what it´s like now and if you met some new people.... Hope so! Love, Sandy |
| 6th July 2008 suze | - From: Alone again, Naturally (70´s pop reference) Gilbert O'Sullivan. Sadly, I didn't even have to look it up. (Talkin' bout my g-g-generation....sorry, I couldn't resist!) Pretty photos - sounds like a good day to relax. Oh wait...you're on vacation, that's all you're doing now! Well, thanks for the beautiful day prize. I'll use it wisely :) xo, Suze |
| 6th July 2008 anonymous | - From: Another great day in the water Wow. I'm not positive, but your description sounds far better than Utah. What an experience. |
| 6th July 2008 suze | Darn.... - From: Another great day in the water Now why did I think you bought a waterproof camera bag when we were in the sports store? Was it a different type of waterproof bag? Dang. I'd love to see some underwater pictures! Sounds like an amazing day. Sad that your friends have gone though....are they off to far-flung places or still in the area? (area being relative - I realize it's a big place!) Just wondering if there was a chance you all could get back together at some point during your stay? In any event, the next batch of travel buddies are sure to be right around the corner....more fun to come! Thanks for the bright and sunny commentary - quite fun to read! Well, you've got rain and maybe a little down time.....haaha - I've sent you something to read - pathetic rambling that might serve as temporary amusement, anyway. Keep the entries coming and I'll be here to read 'em. Your plants are still safe, by the way. (they cower when I approach, but I'm trying my best to get them to trust me :). Stay safe and healthy and of course, have fun you party boy! xo, Suze |
| 5th July 2008 mike allen | Happy 4th - From: Happy 4th Cheers Suze. Hey and thanks for keeping an eye on those plants for me. If I carry on blowing money like I have been I´ll be eating those when I get back. And as for the kitty... mike |
| 5th July 2008 mike allen | Marie - From: Happy 4th Cheers! mike |
| 5th July 2008 Marie | WOW - From: Happy 4th Mike all I can say is WOW! Madison and i have ben following along and I feel like I'm there with you, if nothing else you are a fabulous story teller....waiting for more. Marie |
| 5th July 2008 suze | Happy 4th! - From: Happy 4th Happy to hear you had a great 4th. Sounds like you had the most perfect day in every way possible.... Quiet here - cloudy and a lot cooler, rain early then clearing but not a glorious day for those hoping to spend time at a beach. We had a busy, but low key day and will just hang out this evening - probably watch a movie or two. No parties, I'm afraid! Looking forward to hearing more and to see more of the amazing pictures. Stay safe, healthy and as always, have fun! xo, Suze and Gia |
| 4th July 2008 mike allen | Madison - From: Fernando de Noronha Happy 4th of July! I´m glad you´re enjoying the blog. You should write one too! Thanks for coming along for the ride. mike |
| 4th July 2008 mike allen | kuta - From: rainy day You should head to the slightly less tourist toxic Ubud, perhaps. You must go the dance things with the Balinese orchestras - totally cool! Happy 4th. See you in the blogosphere. m |
| 4th July 2008 pdp | my oh my - From: rainy day I can't believe it, the great homeland security has been stripped of his title. Total grim! I am finally here in Bali, Kuta to be exact. A total disgusting tourist trap. I'll let you read about it on our blg. www.mytb.org/ontheroadEandS Steph is writing the first entry and has been at it four a coule hours, should e pretty good. |
| 4th July 2008 Madison | I love it - From: Fernando de Noronha wow I read you blog every day. It's awesome that you get to go to all of these interesting places. good luck! |
| 3rd July 2008 mike allen | Suze - From: Fernando de Noronha The guy was an idiot when you think about it. All he had to do was be nice to me and he was going to rake in R750 (about 500 dollars). Instead he´s stolen R250, 50 dollars and twenty quid. Hmm. I guess from his point of view, the moral free option was probably easier: pretending to be a decent human for 14 days when infact you´re a no good thieving rat is probably quite a challenge! Thanks for the message and the supportive vibe! mike |
| 3rd July 2008 mike allen | Julie - From: Fernando de Noronha Great to hear from you. Hope all is well. How´s the summer going for those boys so far, notwithstanding the thunderstorms I´ve been hearing about? |
| 3rd July 2008 mike allen | Kristin - From: Fernando de Noronha Yeah, it´s a bit weird here. It used to be a prison colony, then anmilitary base, now the children of the prisoners and ther military are running this UNESCO World Heritage site, fenced in by the federal government. I had some weird dreams the first night all about being innocent of crimes - were the ghosts of the prisoners haunting me? mike |
| 3rd July 2008 Kristin | Jack, Sawyer, Hurley, Locke, Mike Allen - From: Fernando de Noronha I feel like you are on the "Lost" island. If you see any mysterious black smoke following you and/or polar bears, I'd find myself another island. If not, I look forward to your next entry and pictures! |
| 3rd July 2008 Julie Andrew | - From: Fernando de Noronha Hi Mike, We've all been reading about your trip and wish we were there. Especially, after seeing some of the photos from the beaches. It looks beautiful. Some of the parties sound like fun too! You've only been there a little over one week and have done so much. Thanks for sharing it with us. We'll be in touch again. Stay safe! Julie (Kevin, Eric, Scott, and Mark say hi too) |
| 2nd July 2008 suze | - From: Fernando de Noronha Karma, my friend, karma. The pousada rat should start worrying. But that does suck - mean spirited rat marring such a beautiful place. Sounds so lovely....ahh, to be island-bound. Sigh. Not happening here, of that I am sure :( Oh what I'd give to walk some of the beaches you've discovered!! You certainly are not missing anything weather-wise....it's oppressively humid and some crazy thunderstorms have made their way in almost daily now, for the past week or so. We did have hail last week....I was sorry Gia didn't get to see it after I realized she's never seen hail in her 15 years! Loving the gorgeous photos - it does look idyllic and peaceful. As always....stay safe and healthy and have fun! xo, Suze |
| 2nd July 2008 mike allen | Safety and security - From: More parties! Actually no. I need to be more cautious here than anywhere I´ve ever been, to be honest! mike |
| 2nd July 2008 mike allen | Me and Jesus - From: More parties! Cheers, Leila. How´s things? mike |
| 2nd July 2008 mike allen | reading - From: another world Glad you´re on board! Madison - reading is THE key. Without it how can you get in through the door? mike |
| 2nd July 2008 mike allen | Saved - From: More parties! That´s the best news I´ve heard all week! Thank God for that - or whoever sorted the budget out! See you in September. Wherever you end up the meetings continue, right? mike |
| 2nd July 2008 marie | sucked in already... - From: another world Hey Mike, Glad to be on board. This was the first thing I could willingly get Madison to read thus far this summer. She can't wait for more and neither can I. GOD bless... Marie |
| 1st July 2008 Leila Walker | Hi - From: More parties! Hey Mike!! Sounds like a fun trip so far. Lovely pic of you and Jesus by the way... -Leila |
| 30th June 2008 karen bonanno | - From: More parties! Hey Mike! I didn't know you danced? I'll expect to see some moves come September. Your trip looks and sounds amazing so far. What great stories.. I'm looking forward to reading more! Well, the six of us newbies have been saved. We received contracts today although, our exact location has yet to be determined:( The "crew" is having our farewell "meeting" this evening..you will be in our thoughts! Can't wait to hear about the islands! |
| 30th June 2008 Lucille | Way to Go - From: More parties! Hi, Well sounds like you are having a grand old time. Forget safety and security right!! Have you become the new dance man? What is going on with you. Glad to hear that you are having a great time and staying safe. Sure the island will be a different scene but a beautiful and worthwhile one too. Every place has its own different kind of beauty, serenity, etc. Will keep checking in on your ventures and photos. Enjoy and stay safe....... Lucille |
| 29th June 2008 ontheroadEandS | CODE RED!! CODE RED!! - From: Festa, festa! What in all of creation is happening!?! The office of homeland security regrets to inform you that things have gone completely FUBAR here in Olinda. All safety and security regulations have been violated and the general safety of the journey has been compromised. The office recommends all travelers stay in in their rooms until further notice. Under no circumstances should this incident be spoken about, reffered to, or acknowledged to the public. Abort mission!! All visitors stay in your rooms within the safety of your nets! |
| 29th June 2008 suze | - From: Festa, festa! You social butterfly! Sounds like a lot of fun - hope you'll post photos of the festivities! While it may have felt like you threw caution to the wind, you possibly have the most intuitive good sense of anyone I know, so I'm not surprised it all went very well! So the weather is very, very hot there? But you are not wearing 'hot weather' clothing?? 'Splain, please? We got your plants sorted today. They're good. (For now). Very weird not to be greeted by the Boy though....I kept thinking we needed to find him to let him out. Oh yeah....had a slight panic attack at arriving to a blank space where the bike normally is. Whew....I was relieved when we found it! And Gia and I went to a very cool yard sale in your neighborhood.....these people had exactly the same taste in music as us and had their entire CD collection out on the lawn. Needless to say, we pounced and scored a pile of excellent CD's that were suprisingly not in our stash already! That's about it from here. Keep having a fab adventure and we'll keep following along! Take good care, xo, Suze p.s. the cow graffiti photo is my favorite, so far. Oh wait....no, my second favorite - after you and Jesus. |
| 28th June 2008 mike allen | Animals - From: another world Yes, and more. Everything, from the heat to the expense, from the animals to, well, the animals! |
| 28th June 2008 ontheroadEandS | Like Animals? - From: another world Well....like animals? |
| 28th June 2008 Brenda petzold | - From: another world Hey, I'm following along too, albeit silently. So your numbers are slightly higher than "both". Sounds like an incredible trip thus far- I'm envious and can't wait to hear more. -Brenda |
| 27th June 2008 Antony Allen | Weekend ahead - From: Sun breaks out! Hi Mike and good to hear from you again. I am sitting here at work putting the finishing touches to the weeks work! I rememebr the views out there and am chuffed that you have settled into vacation. I was most impressed with Spain last night despite my sweep team Russia failing poorly in the end. Thsi weekend is heavy duty book keeping for APVA Ltd as the end of year approaches June 30th. I am creeping up to a 11 mile run on Sunday and will do 7 miles tonight on the way home. For some reason a really nice mexican eating place over there comes to mind and I think it was on the top floor of a hotel! Not really much more excitement from this end so not much to report. I will print off your blog and take it round to Frank's over the weekend. Keep in touch when you can and stay safe. Middle Allen over and out .. Travel Well. |
| 27th June 2008 Gia | Jesus! - From: Sun breaks out! Ay dios mio, encontraste Jesus! Translation: Oh my god, you have found Jesus! Hope I'm not confusing your Spanish and Portuguese and God knows what other languages being spoken (no pun intended...okay, maybe a little.) Adios amigo Allen! -gia- |
| 27th June 2008 ontheroadEandS | Jeeeezus?!? - From: Sun breaks out! have you found god already? I wouldn't think it would be in the form of a 30 ft statue, I figured some scantly clad Brazillian on the beach. Go figure, just when I thought I knew you. How do you not manage to sit next to the Argentinians? Man that geriatric couldn't have even been cute in her prime....the shame....the shame ;) |
| 26th June 2008 Suze and Gia | OH gosh! - From: Sun breaks out! Just refreshed my page after submitting the last comment and what do I see? You and Jesus. Quite a sight. Indeed! Suze |
| 26th June 2008 Suze and Gia | Love the contrast! - From: Sun breaks out! Great photo, Michael....although the one on the left looks a bit painful. Glad the sun showed you the livelier side of things - we could use a bit now, it's quite cloudy and foreboding outside. Sounds like a lovely day with equally lovely scenery! Enjoy! xo, Suze and Gia |
