| 13th August 2008 mike allen | MIchael - From: Last post from Brazil Thanks for the message. It's great to hear from you. I thank you for your kind words as this aspect of the summer draws to a close for me. Already, the first hint of dawn from the new school year was starting to creep into the sky for me. It's going to be seem a mere heartbeat, and we'll all be back together again. I hope you've had some time for relaxation during what no doubt has been a hectic summer for you. All the best, mike |
| 13th August 2008 Michael Simon | Greetings from the Brooks! - From: Last post from Brazil Dear Mike, Eric, Kristin, Christina, and 'fellow travelers'-- Following all of your trips has been fascinating and educational. I truly feel as if I've learned so much about the world that I would never uncover on my own. Not only are your individual exploits interesting, but your connections, both through meeting up and through discussions of shared experiences, add an incredible depth to the experience. You can't imagine how exciting it is for me that four teachers from my school are out there experiencing the world in ways that most of us will never be brave enough to try. When we say that we like to have teachers who bring different experience and backgrounds to a school, we don't realize what the potential really is. What you're doing this summer adds such an amazing dimension to our community! |
| 13th August 2008 mike allen | Suze - From: Last post from Brazil I don't know about perfect. More lazy than perfect, to be honest! See you soon! mike |
| 13th August 2008 mike allen | Kristin - From: Last post from Brazil So is it true? 3rd grade? What about the others? Any other gossip? Anyway, I can't believe you would make fun of me when I was the one you secretly were plotting with to overthrow President Paci. Oops. Did I write that out loud? mike |
| 13th August 2008 mike allen | Lucille - From: Last post from Brazil Thanks for being there throughout Lucille. Heard any good gossip about next year? What about your job? I guess we'll all find out soon enough! mike |
| 13th August 2008 mike allen | Eric - From: Last post from Brazil Cheers mate. It's been fun. I really can see me coming back to Brazil. You know the Fantastic 4? . Who is Mr Fantastic, Invisible Girl, The Human Torch and The Thing in your little group I wonder? See you in Medford! You're gonna be buying... mike |
| 13th August 2008 ontheroadEandS | hey - From: Last post from Brazil glad that it all worked out. I completely understand what you mean about longer stays in places. it is amazing how in random parts of the world you can still find so much in common with people who live a completely different life. I am in Thailand with kristin, christina, courtney, and mekala. What a foursom! I'll give you all the details on that one later. It has been fun though, have a great time at the wedding and wish your brothers well for me. thought of you often and glad you made it through skin still attached, even if your wallet is a bit lighter for it. |
| 13th August 2008 Lucille | Last Post - From: Last post from Brazil Hi, Well enjoy your remaining days. I have thoroughly enjoyed following along with you on this journey. Thanks for sharing. Glad to hear that you have made some more real friends and some that you would really like to keep in contact with and return to visit in the future. This also enhances the journey. Safe travels home. Lucille |
| 13th August 2008 Howell | Raining again - From: Last post from Brazil Nothing really worthwhile to write. I'm just enjoying all your pictures with other people in them since you lost your camera. Eric reinacted your security precautions of bug checking before bed time. Don't feel bad. We made fun of Karen loads longer than you. See you soon. |
| 12th August 2008 Suze and Gia | Non summary - From: Last post from Brazil I think the non-summary is perfect. Your entire trip has been a nicely balanced flow...in and out of places and, as you said, in and out of the lives of the people you've met along the way. I've viewed the blog entries not as summaries of each segment, but as highlights - the stories that were foremost in your mind at that moment in time. It will be interesting for you to discover which stories stay as prominent as they are right now.....and which others will emerge from the depths of your memory later on, down the road. It's been a lovely read and we thank you for taking the time to share it all with us, so thoughtfully and eloquently. We've been 'with' you in spirit, all along the way and look forward to seeing you soon. Enjoy your last couple of days! xo, Suze and Gia |

| 9th August 2008 mike allen | Marion - From: Big City Great to hear from you. You must be starting to settle in by now, I would think. I'm going to chase down your blog after I finish here. How is the Portuguese coming? I've met some pretty excellent people on this trip and even though we only met briefly, I include you two in that category! Say hello to Laureline for me, and keep her away from the caiperinhas! |
| 9th August 2008 mike allen | Leila - From: Ho Hum Is that cool or what! I'm going to try to watch the long jump event if I can. Go, Arantxa, go!! Wasn't the opening ceremony spectacular today? I don't remember past ones, but this one I thought was a pretty impressive work of art! What do you think? Anyway, I hope you're having a fab summer! |
| 9th August 2008 mike allen | Suze and Gia - From: Ho Hum I'm intending on sking Elso to just send mr the memory cards, but I haven't heard from him for a while. He's probably working in the jungle. Hopefully! |
| 9th August 2008 mike allen | Clare, Hannah Dana - From: Ho Hum Hopefully, you see my latest blog about the fascinting turn of events. As for the camera, I'still waiting to hear back from Elso. Thanks for the other message you sent too. You're too kind! |
| 8th August 2008 Nams | hey!! - From: Big City Hello Mike, it's Marion. thanks for your advises, they were usefull... I promisse. Now we're living in an other place, but still in Olinda. we finally met real friends... those who don't count with the wallet, even if many of them are foreigners... Your latest pictures are great!! Pantanal seems really nice! and I wish you good continuation in this beautiful trip... It was a pleasure to meet even if it was short. If you want some news from Olinda, just ask. I create a blog too, i think it's travelblog/bloggers/Namast_he. muitos beijos ^^ Marion et Laureline |
| 7th August 2008 Leila Walker | - From: Ho Hum Hi Mike! Sounds like fun so far... Did you know Arantxa King is going to the Olympics? Long jump. Can you believe it???? Sorry about the camera, hope you have fun anyways. -Leila |
| 7th August 2008 Suze and Gia | The Camera - From: Ho Hum You've probably thought of all the options by now, but how about an SD card - you have a couple of extras, right? Could you get those to Elso (or to his home) and have him move the photos on the camera to the card? Then all he'd have to do is send the card in an envelope to you. He wouldn't even need the the camera's USB cable for that. Or....if he has a cable, he could put them on a flash drive for you? You'd be out the camera, but would still have all the media from it. Think any of those ideas would work out? |
| 7th August 2008 clare, Hannah and Dana | hello ho hum - From: Ho Hum Hi Michael! Must be hard to face all the "last meals" with fast friends. Perhaps instead of waiting for the bus - you should head to the boat docks - clear your head w/ lovely salt air, maybe hitch a boat ride... recapture the magic. Regarding your camera - forget the mail, how about asking Elso to ask a (trusted) tourist from a recent tour, who may be heading off Cuiba to bring it along to ... the mainland...Rio....Somerville, wherever they may be headed...? Too risky? Just a thought, although the "trusted" part may be more than you could expect! Clare |
| 7th August 2008 mike allen | Lucille - From: Ho Hum Youīre right, of course. Itīs myself Iīm annoyed with. Some people lose their socks, or their boxers. I lose the most expensive and important thing in my pack! Now, where exactly is my passport again? |
| 7th August 2008 mike allen | Eric - Horse vs camel - From: Pantanal pics Tell it to my backside! Now I know why John Wayne walked the way he did! mike |
| 7th August 2008 ontheroadEandS | Stick to horse.... - From: Pantanal pics I guess the horseworked out better thanthe camel. Glad to hear it! |
| 6th August 2008 Lucille | Last Week - From: Ho Hum Hi I know you miss the camera, but do remember the memories, experiences and friends you've met along the way are worth much more than pictures. I know that you know that too but are really just upset to not have the camera or at this point being able to get it back. As for the money spent there although it has been expensive remember all that you have learned, experienced and will be bringing back to share and teach to others. It really is priceless. Easy for me to say I know. There really is no price on that. Enjoy your last week......do whatever you need and want to. Do not worry I will get you your coffee at Starbucks if needed when you get back Enjoy and stay safe. Lucille |
| 6th August 2008 Suze and Gia | Our latest obsession.... - From: Ho Hum is Arrested Development :) I bought the entire first season DVD set - watched about 1/2 of it, so far. Gia, being even more obsessed than I, hasn't stopped - she is close to finished with the whole set. And she plans on buying the second season soon. Haahaa....not quite as exciting as your summer, but our kind of fun. Yes, send your flight details whenever you can, I don't think I have them. Just think....soon enough the 3 Musketeers will be back in action.....music, movies and bad DVD's! We can all be broke together :) Talk with you soon, Suze |
| 6th August 2008 mike allen | Suze - From: Ho Hum I leave Brazil a week on Thursday. I arrive in Miami Friday AM but have to hang around Miami all day. I arrive in Boston in the evening. I donīt have the details to hand, but Iīll send them to you over the next few days if you donīt have them already. Hope all is well with you guys! See you soon |
| 6th August 2008 Suze and Gia | Camera - From: Ho Hum Hmmm. Yes, sending the camera from Brazil is expensive....I just checked on my own FEx discount and it's still pricey. Actually, Brazil is one of the most expensive locations to send mail to and from, in general. I remember some Brazilian pals always complaining about it. If I think of a simpler/cheaper option I'll let you know. As for your travel slowdown....I'll bet you'll find some interesting enough things to do. In my eyes, it sure looks all good. Which day do you actually leave to come back? |
| 6th August 2008 mike allen | Kristin - From: Pantanal pics Cheers. I think your pictures are pretty epic, too! |
| 6th August 2008 Howell | Mike A - From: Pantanal pics Hey, excellent picture taking!! |
| 5th August 2008 mike allen | pics from rio - From: Pantanal pics I see! As for pics, I donīt have a camera! See you soon. mike |
| 5th August 2008 Suze and Gia | Haahaa...no - From: Pantanal pics My counting wasn't in Portugese....it was Italian! I was answering the question posed in your blog entry....re: the hidden dynamic in the group photo :) Well, keep us posted on whatever is coming up....maybe you can post more photos of the sights in Rio, especially the beaches? (PG rated, of course!) Suze |
| 5th August 2008 mike allen | Eric - From: Pantanal safari Solid B+! mike |
| 5th August 2008 mike allen | Brenda - From: George of the jungle Part 2 If only I had my photos.... mike |
| 5th August 2008 mike allen | Lucille - From: Pantanal pics Thanks for the messages. I can already feel the summer closing in, with only one week left of this trip. Weīll be back at Starbucks before we know it! mike |
| 5th August 2008 mike allen | Suze and Gia - From: Pantanal pics Not right on the Portuguese, Iīm afraid! Iīve just changed my flight, so Iīm flying back to Rio tomorrow afternoon. Once I get there, Iīll see what I can do for a few days - thereīs plenty to do in the City, to be honest - including the beach. As for the cute rodent, I ate one in the Amazon. Tasted like beef. If I had realized how cute tyhey werer, I donīt know! mike |
| 5th August 2008 mike allen | Amazon Lodges - From: George of the Jungle returns Hi Elizabeth. People I spoke to said the whole Juma area was more touristy than Mamori lake. I canīt say. I can say that Mamori lake was very beautiful. I would recommend going into the forest as much as possible rather than just staying in the lodges and doing the day trips. If you want to try Elso for yourself, he works with Claudio at the Hotel 10th July in Manaus. He is not in the guidebook yet, but two agencies that are the highest recommendations are also based in the Hotel, so you can shop around all three in about one hour! Have a great time in the jungle! mike |
| 5th August 2008 Elizabeth | Question about Lodge - From: George of the Jungle returns Hi Mike! Great post and it sounds like a super adventure. I am going with 3 friends to that area and we are trying to decide on the Lodge to stay. We are considering Juma Lodge or Malocas Lodge. Just wondering if you happened to stay in any of these, or if you have any recommendations. Sounds like you had a great guide, Elso! Thanks! Elizabeth |
| 4th August 2008 Suze and Gia | Uno, due, tre.... - From: Pantanal pics Am I correct? Anyway, sounds like a lovely time. So interesting about the parakeets and jabiri. I'm sure you'll find something amazing to do for the final leg of the trip :) So you've got about 10 or 11 days to go? Do you need to build in a little travel time too? Let me know the return plan when you've got it sorted out, okay? For now, stay safe, healthy and continued fun to you! xo, Suze |
| 4th August 2008 Suze and Gia | "Very tasty too"??? - From: Pantanal pics Wait....the cute tailess rodents that are dog-sized.....you ATE them? "Cutest rodents in the world".....for dinner? Sigh. Can't wait to read the rest of your entry, when it's up. Did you get your camera back yet? And hmmm. Looks like a run for new shoes will be in order when you get back, yes? |
