Asia November 2nd 2009

Today will be the last day that we write. We have a full day to fill here in Hanoi and then we get on a plane for Tokyo at midnight. We are flying Tokyo Air again adn are very excited about that. We get to Japan at 6:30 in the morning and don't fly out again until 7pm so we are going to spend a day in the city and hopefully find some good sushi. Our flight leaves Tokyo at 7pm tomm and arrives in Minneapolis at 7pm the same day. We've had fun here and we are sad this trip is over but really excited to see everyone and share our photos and stories with you. We have traveled by Plane, taxi, tuk-tuk, train, bus, sleeper bus, water taxi, long-tail boat, ferry, bicycles, motorbikes, and ... read more

Asia October 31st 2009

Hello! We are back in the city after a wonderful two days on Ha Long Bay which is part of the Gulf of Tonkin. We spent two days and one night on an old fashioned junk boat which was the most luxurious thing Steve and I have ever done and was so much better because we weren't expecting it to be that nice for what we paid for it. There was only one other couple on our cruise. They were from England and we all got along so well. The scenery was indescribable and they fed us so much of the best food we've had the whole time. Our sleeper cabin was really nice as well. We got to hike to the top of a cliff for a good viewpoint, do some swimming, kayak through a ... read more

This morning we left Hoi An and took a short bus ride to Hue on the northcentral coast. We walked to the Citadel which is the big thing to see there. It's an old city that a king built surrounded by a moat and a brick wall. It's massive inside. In the middle there is another city called the Imperial City or Forbidden City with its own moat and wall. this was the place for the king and his family. It was a really cool place. The US bombed it heavily in the war so it's in disrepair but they are reconstructing what they can. We also went to a small war museum about the "american war" which was very interesting because of the way they described the events from their perspective. After a few hours ... read more

We have moved up the Vietnam coast to Hoi An. To get here we had to take a 12 hour bus ride on a sleeper bus which was not a fun experience. There are three rows of matchboxes to sleep in and they are stacked two rows high. Cramped to say the least. Then, they had us go to the back row where they had squished 6 of us in 5 beds and there should not have even been beds there because they were half on a utility box of some sort. Steve barely fit but I got to cuddle with a german girl and her twin sister all night(Steve was wishing to trade places I'm sure). To top it off the toilet was broken. They stopped at places to use a ceramic hole in the ... read more

Two nights ago we got on a sleeper train at 11pm to head to Nha Trang. It was a 7 hour ride and or the most part we slept well. There were 6 people to a bunk room on the train and even though the soft beds were sold out, the hard ones weren't that bad. The other people in our car did not speak any english and snored a lot though. This city is so beautiful. It's a little beach town with the most amazing beach, amazing water and no crowds. We have been spending time just relaxing the last couple days and swimming in the south china Sea. We also got massages in the beach for about $8 an hour which is actually kind of expensive here. The only bad part in this place ... read more

Well, we made it to Vietnam and so far our ecperience has been wonderful. Our hostess at the hotek is the sweetest person I have ever met and really helped us get our bearings here. We arrived in the evening so we went out to dinner and a few cocktails. As we were leaving the restaurant I noticed a little art shop across the street adn I wanted to check it out. Steve and I went in to look around and a gentleman came out to ask us where we were from. When I said America he got very excited and pointed around the corner, there was two other Vietnamese men and a young American sitting around a table enjoying a few Saigon beers. They offered us a chair and the friends of the other guy ... read more

The last two days have been a real reality check for us but a necessary evil. I will try to explain. We arrived in Phnom Penh yesterday after a really long, crappy bus ride. I took us 6 hours to get 200 miles on a bus filled with locals, blasting Cambodian Kareoke and listening to our driver slam on the horm every other second. The horn sound alone was piercing, not to mention everything else so sleep was impossible. To top it off there was no food for the trip. We didn't have an opportunity to pack any and, though we stopped a couple times the other thing for sale to eat were whole fish dried in the sun adn something that I thought was a muffin that tasted liek fish. When we finally arrived we ... read more

Lovin Siem Reap!! We arrived here in Cambodia yesterday after a long day of travel. We didn know what to expect of Cambodia but iot has so far exceeded all our expectations. After getting through the border crossing(we had to go through with a guide which was a good thing because it was confusing and a bit sketchy if you were alone) We had a noce two hour taxi ride to our hotel in siem Reap. We only pd. $9 a night for the place so I wasn sure what to expect but it is clean, has hot water, comfortable beds and great people. The ride here was so good, we got to see the Cambodian countryside which is covered with rice paddies, little villiages and random cows everywhere picketed out and on the road. The ... read more

Hi everyone! We are currently in Bangkok in China Town at the White Orchid hotel. For dinner we had a Chinese buffet downstairs and it was amazing. We didn really know what we were eating half the time but it was all good. (Dad, you have to try the real thing sometime, youd love it!) We had a long day of traveling today....We spent the last two days on Phi Phi Island near Phuket in the Andaman Sea. It was this cute little island that was pretty much uninhabited except for the coastlines in the coves. To get there we had to take a ferry from Phuket Pier which took two hours and was really cool. We sat on the top deck in the sun with about 100 other young travelers. The scenery there was great. ... read more

Hello all, We have been having a great time in Phuket (pronounced poo-get) hanging on the beach, eating out etc. Yesterday we swam in the Andaman Sea which is part if the Indian Ocean. Steve rented a boogie board and I sat under an umbrella and read for awhile. Early in the morning we went on a safari where we got to ride elephants, meet some monkeys, learn about rice farming, Thai cooking and rubber tapping, went canoeing by a fishing villiage and at the end they served us a fabulous Thai lunch. Overall, it was a great Thai experience and we learned a lot. When we got to meet the elephants they had a soccer goal set up and I played goalie while an elephant kicked a soccer ball at me a few times. The ... read more
