Ahoj my enthralled readers! I know it’s been a while since I’ve updated this thing, and I apologize. Life here is crazy in Česká republika, there’s always lots going on and things to do, but since I saw all of you at Christmas and updated you on some of the things going on here, I think I’ll skip a lot and tell you about my post-Christmas adventures. After spending New Year’s Day sick flying from Boston to Amsterdam to Prague, I finally made it back to Havlíčkův Brod and got right back in the swing of school. Not surprisingly, the first day back to school was difficult, as I had just arrived in Havlíčkův Brod roughly 12 hours beforehand, and my internal clock was all screwed up with the time change. However, I persevered and survived. ... read more

Cześć! I’m back in the Czech Republic, but have just spent five awesome days in Poland, which is the 20th (!) country I've visited in Europe, where I had so much fun and got to meet so many awesome new people. Idziemy! (Let’s go!) Last Thursday night, I met one of the geography teachers from the Gymnázium, Hana, and we drove with her sister to a nearby village, Okrouhlice, for their annual zvěřina. Zvěřina means “game” in Czech, referring to hunting. We met three of their friends there, and sat down to a dinner of freshly hunted meat. Hana started to explain to me what each thing was, in a mixture of Czech-English-German, and I looked at her and said, “Honestly, it’s better if I don’t know.” I then ordered a soup and some goulash, and ... read more

Čau! Here’s just a quick little update about last weekend’s adventure. Last Wednesday was Emily’s, one of the Fulbright exchange teachers from Washington state, birthday, so over the weekend, I went to the city she’s living in, Tábor, to visit, celebrate, and see another Bohemian city. It was an absolutely beautiful city and a fun weekend overall. On Friday, I set out on my crazy train journey to Tábor, which is Czech for “camp,” since it was originally an army campsite. If I were simply to drive there, it would take me about an hour. However, the train connection between Havlíčkův Brod and Tábor isn’t exactly the greatest, and so it took me about four hours. I first went from Havlíčkův Brod to Jihlava, then from Jihlava to Horní Cerekev, and from Horní Cerekev to Tábor. ... read more

Ahoj! Last Tuesday, one of my craziest travel adventures began, a trip to the Balkans. Since Thursday, October 28, is one of the Czechs’ national holidays, celebrating the anniversary of Czechoslovakia’s freedom from the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the creation of Czechoslovakia, we had our “Fall Break,” so Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday off. For this break, Alex, Calan and I decided to head to the Balkans. The Balkans is the name given to the area of Southeast Europe, most of which formerly was Yugoslavia. I’ll give you just a little crash-course in this region’s history, just so the rest of what I’m going to write makes sense. Being in the southeast corner of the continent, this is truly the region where east and west combine…or perhaps better to say collide. The area is made up nowadays of ... read more

Nazdar! It’s been a little while since my last update, but this past week has been so absolutely insane that this is my first time to sit down and have a few free minutes to do something besides work, etc. Well, here we go. Last Friday morning, I hopped on the train and started my four hour journey into the east. Although Havlíčkův Brod lies right along the stretch between Prague and Brno (almost in the dead center, to be exact), the train connections here are otherwise atrocious. I can get to Prague and Brno very easily, there are trains leaving every two hours, but otherwise, it takes a while to get anywhere else (since I typically have to go to either Prague or Brno and then connect). Anyways, I headed down to my favorite city ... read more

Happy Friday! I currently don’t have internet in my apartment for some reason, so while I wait for the guy to come check it out, I decided I’d write you all a little about this past week and some of the other things going on here that I haven’t included in my other blogs, and then will post it once my internet’s up and running again. Yesterday ended my first full week of teaching, which is kind of wild to think about, given that I’ve been here now more than a month. Anyways, I thought I’d just tell you about some of the things that my students and I do, and tell you a little about the Czech system as well. If I write things I’ve already written in previous entries, I apologize, but bear with ... read more

Greetings to all. It's a little late, I wrote this blog on Sunday in the train on the way back from Vsetín, but I've finally had time to upload it, so here you go: As I write to you all, I’m on the train on the way back to Havlíčkův Brod from Vsetín, pulling out of the train station in Olomouc, having just watched Emily make a mad dash to catch her connecting train. I spent the weekend in Vsetín, a small town in the Czech Republic on the border of Slovakia visiting Calan with Emily, which was a great time. The main purpose of this blog, however, will be to tell you about my trip to Italy. As most of you know, I left last Thursday, September 23rd, on a trip with the high school ... read more

I apologize for the long wait for my next blog, these past few weeks have been ridiculous busy! It’s been more than a month now that I’ve been constantly traveling, be it to Boston, to New York, to the Czech Republic, back and forth between Prague, to Brno, to Moravská Třebová, and now on Thursday, I’m headed to Italy! It’s been a blast, but exhausting at the same time, and I’ve also yet to have steady internet (and won’t have internet in my apartment until the 29th!), so bear with me in the amount of things I’m about to talk about! Since we last spoke, I’ve been teaching at the medical school. My first week went fairly well, except for the fact that I was very sick. The weather here is naturally much drier than in ... read more

Ahoj, I'm writing to you now from a small café on the main square of Havlíčkův Brod. At the moment, I still don't have internet in my apartment, so I've been coming here instead to check my email, etc. If I haven't responded to your last comments yet, I apologize, and hopefully this entry'll take care of some your questions. This past week has been very eventful. The last time we spoke, I was in Prague in a hotel enjoying the comforts of having a chair to sit on and a lamp so I could actually see. Oh, and a shower curtain, that was important. After a trip to IKEA and buying myself a small lamp and a shower curtain (Great success!), I went to bed and woke up bright and early to head to Praha ... read more

I'm sitting here in the beautiful Old Town of Praha, the capital city of the Czech Republic, one street away from Náměstí Republiky (The Square of the Republic), and about a two minute walk away from the famous Orloj leading to Karlův Most (Charles' Bridge), which spans the Vltava leading the way to Praský Hrad, the Castle of Prague. Before we get started, though, let's back up a little. For those of you who don't know, I am one of the ... read more
