| 16th February 2008 alex | Philippine Eagle - nope! - From: The Mysteries of Boracay: Hobbits, Crystal Caves, and One Drink Wonders, All for Ten Pesos glad you had a great time in Boracay... But the eagle you've mentioned as Philippine Eagle is not a Philiippine Eagle... i think it's a sea eagle (am not so sure if it could be called a Philippine sea eagle hehe). The real Philippine Eagle is not supposed to be kept in cages and any business establishment keeping such wildlife would be in trouble! |

| 4th June 2007 Andrea | it ain't ova! - From: Blog Entry #100: MAD-MIA-YYZ (Madrid to Miami to Toronto and Coming Full Circle) That's right. Toronto still has to show you a good time kids! See you tonight! |
| 2nd June 2007 melee | You're right - From: Blog Entry #100: MAD-MIA-YYZ (Madrid to Miami to Toronto and Coming Full Circle) Mamu, it turns out that we did not mention the "this is not a night-club" quote. It was in the Admiral's Club in Terminal A. With all the excess drink coupons, the bartender thought that Meli, Louis, and I were making too many trips to the bar, Louis being the third to arrive. So it was to him that she said "this is not a nightclub, this is a VIP lounge," and she threatened to check into why we had so many drink coupons. (We had so many because they gave us more for a longer layover, and when we went to go get food and re-entered, they gave us even more). |

| 31st May 2007 Eric | - From: Our Last Day in Europe: Reflections on Madrid Then and Now and a Paseo on Gran Vía--Blog Entry #99 I just spent the last hour slowing reading through and being completely engaged in your Spain blogs. Tons of feelings of nostalgia, both happy and sad filled me as a I read. I enjoyed seeing the familiar spots in Spain, and also felt a sense of loss when you talked about places that no longer exist, or changes that have taken place. It was also moving to hear how your mindset has changed from your 20's to 30's. Thank you both for sharing your worldwide travel experiences and for being an inspiration in my life as well. |

| 30th May 2007 Alea | Alea's an idiot - From: Ahmond Shleevers, Heineken Beer, and The Denial of Anne Frank ok, when i was younger i thought heneiken was a Virgin Islands beer-- it was the only respected drink (outside of rum), there were calypso odes to it, it had its own patois name... of course, makes sense since the VI was owned by the dutch for eons (Gade anyone??)- but yeah, my dumb moment. great blogging! |

| 25th May 2007 melee | sancerre - From: Magnifique Monceau: J’arrive, finalement! mom -- there is definitely sancerre in cali. that was where i first tried it -- in a cafe in san francisco on bettina's birthday some five years ago. maybe not at trader joe's, but go on and step up to the real wine shops! |
| 25th May 2007 mom | great job, bett! - From: Magnifique Monceau: J’arrive, finalement! that was great blogging, bett! woo hoo. looking forward to your next blogs. by the way, no sancerre here. but TJ carries a lot of french wine - 12.5% alcohol vs. 14% for california wine. however, a friend hypothesized that an allergy to sulfates may be the reason for the big head senstations with california wines and no such reaction to french wines. and i actually am up to 2 inches now. will do a blind test though to see if i still get those big head sensations from CA wine (red or white). |
| 25th May 2007 Little Ri | Simply amazing - From: Magnifique Monceau: J’arrive, finalement! Bettina and Melissa, you are both soooo good at describing your trip! | 10th May 2007 sOL | Egypt and Mexico got jacked! - From: PINAY AKO! Meli shops in London before finding Spam in the West End I think it's time to give back the artifacts. London is stealing from everyone. Give my people back their history! (Unless it's a traveling show then I retract my last comment) sOL |
| 10th May 2007 sOL | whole lot of pics of alcohol - From: From St. Paul’s to Piccadilly Circus: A Sunday Stroll in London You guys must be having a great time. I'm envious. I'm stuck in the ICU for 2 1/2 more weeks. Will you guys be in Paris from May 26th through the 30th? My tickets are all bought and I'm ready to go. Starr will be meeting me in Rome. At the last minute her job kept her from coming with me to Paris. Holler. sOL |
| 9th May 2007 melee | Time lag - From: Too Sunny at Stonehenge, No Steak at Salisbury… Magna Carta Was Good Though Hi Alea -- It's my last day in Egypt, and Leroy arrived in Paris this morning. I just got back from Orlando myself. The time lag with the blogs makes it a bit confusing, but our home page always has in bold where we are in real time. We'll post those blogs soon, but yes, we saw the Giza Pyramids. Leroy saw more (Soukhna, Saqqara) while I was gone. It was hot, but my mom's friend from high school hosted us -- so we've had lots of a/c and a driver to take us around. So spoiled, I love it! |
| 9th May 2007 Alea | On second thought.... - From: Too Sunny at Stonehenge, No Steak at Salisbury… Magna Carta Was Good Though Melissa's going to HATE Egypt-heat, now that I think about it! It's literally hot as Hell. If you have loose fitting clothes (skirts, loose cotton T's, etc) or can afford to buy it there, that's the time to break it out-- it's far, far, far cooler than any other form of dress... down to the head wrap, trust me. |
| 9th May 2007 Alea | - From: Too Sunny at Stonehenge, No Steak at Salisbury… Magna Carta Was Good Though Stella with a top... I'm going to have to try that! I can't wait till y'all get to Egypt. Will you get to tour the pyramids and temples? |
| 8th May 2007 Alea | Pele - From: From St. Paul’s to Piccadilly Circus: A Sunday Stroll in London Pele spoke at my graduation!! Well... actually, his daughter grad with us and he came on stage & got a 5-minute standing ovation. Our real speaker got booed. We're not very subtle ...or friendly I guess. I'm not feeling London so far. Speaking vicariously, of course : ) |
| 7th May 2007 melee | bathrooms - From: GOLD! Unearthing Ibn Battuta’s Stash in Dubai well, the invisibility was only in certain areas. and in places like the mall, there were lots of expats, tourists, and native women (although likely the more well off ones). maybe the mall is an extension of women's domain. i certainly felt at home in it. in general, i avoid shady bathrooms anyway. that underworld must be amazing. |
| 6th May 2007 Alea | - From: GOLD! Unearthing Ibn Battuta’s Stash in Dubai What in tacky, technicolor h*ll is the Burj and why's it have a worm-like plastic hardback casing?? ...It sounds like country-side Egypt in that the women rule the home (our tour guide had a PhD and was very modern but while her husband was alive, he worked, grocery shopped etc and she existed ONLY within the confines of their multi-leveled home, raising the kids and keeping house. And she was fine with it. Said there was a whole underworld of women Western women don't experience.) ...So Melissa, I'm just curious: how'd you find somewhere to use the bathroom while invisible? |
| 4th May 2007 Eric Harp | cheers, gov'na! - From: Cheer Up London! Betty Ford isn’t here yet. London can definitely break the bank if you're not careful. Oh, and a quick word of advice - if you go to check out the crown jewels, know that they don't play around when they say "no photographs or video"...at least they didn't when I was there |
| 3rd May 2007 melee | blood mary is not the girl i love... - From: In Search of Enlightenment well, i would think that v-8 with vodka would be somewhat interesting, although i haven't had a v-8 since trying it once at age 12 and nearly vomiting. i should have remembered that. it's exactly what it sounds like -- tomato juice and vodka, and i thought maybe adding salt would have made it better, but i was too chicken to try. the vodka was rough, because the juice did nothing to help it. not to mention i hate celery. i don't know what i was thinking, but i know better now. |
| 3rd May 2007 melee | oh no! - From: Bangkok to Dubai: Goodbye Land of Smiles, Hello Land of Everything peewee, how we wish we had known. angela just IM-ed me to say she forgot to tell me you were in dubai. we would have loved to meet you and had a connect. well, next time, right? |
| 1st May 2007 Alea | - From: In Search of Enlightenment The details on these temples are amazing! Hey Meli, what's the story on the Bloody Mary? (I personally think they look like V-8 with Tabasco, which is just naaasty) |

| 27th April 2007 xandra | one drink wonder - From: The Mysteries of Boracay: Hobbits, Crystal Caves, and One Drink Wonders, All for Ten Pesos i W.O.N. that drink when leroy challenged the table for the meaning of "Napo in the Fache" (proof of reading the blog, accdg to leroy). that was a great night =) especially since it was the only night i was able to go out. HI BETT!!! |
| 26th April 2007 Brandee | bringing back memories - From: Ko Phi Phi: Island hopping, beach bumming, and altogether living too good a life I think Lou and I took the exact same tour! There were no stinging microscopic jellyfish though. What I remember most is the heart attack Louis almost gave me when he decided to swim off on his own. The boat was ready to take off and the other tourists tried to be helpful by pointing out every remotely brown person in the vicinity. By then, of course, Lou was the color of tar. They meant well though :). Lou took his sweet time and eventually made it back to the boat. |
| 26th April 2007 jamie | wow - From: Ko Phi Phi: Island hopping, beach bumming, and altogether living too good a life the water is so nice and clear! perfect for diving!!! |
| 25th April 2007 Alea | Wow - From: The Museum of American War Crimes This journal entry was amazing-- thanks for sharing. I agree with Tom, to a point: until American history deals with both sides of a story we will never feel the accountability needed to learn from past acts. It's ultimately irrelevant that the NVA and VC committed atrocities, too: the bigger point is we both acted inhumanely, grossly so, and how do we prevent it from reoccurring in Afghanistan, Iraq, Israel/Palestine, Africa... |
| 25th April 2007 bett | the water is AMAZING - From: Ko Phi Phi: Island hopping, beach bumming, and altogether living too good a life ko phi phi!!! i can't believe how beautiful it is out there. thailand has been wonderful for you. |

| 25th April 2007 chie | embassy is wack! - From: A Night at Embassy Lives Up to Expectations I have to comment and relate to you that Embassy is WACK!.. I was there with my wife and a few friends from the states in 05.. From what I heard that Embassy is supposed to be the best place to party in Manila.. All I can say is.. WOW.. I never saw so much nuckle heads in my life.. The elbowing and the smoke was the worse.. There is this European lady in the front being a bitch if the males were not wearing a collard shirt. She must have not been there because she would have given Leroy a hard time.. One of our friends had to go home and pick up a shirt before they let him in.. The DJ's were hillarious, they kept repping the bay area too...The crowd would get all hype and excited like they were from the bay area (funny). The bar ran out of liquor.. Everything we ordered, they said it was all sold out.. How can a bar run out of liquor?? Just like you, that would be our last time going there hahah |
| 23rd April 2007 Athena | Another reason to come to LA! - From: Match Day! The wait is over...we are Los Angeles bound Hey guys! I know you're halfway around the world by now, but I've only just managed to reengage with the blogs. Please forgive my delay in congratulating you guys for matching together, and at your #1 choice! That's so great...and just one more reason for me to visit LA. Man, California is really calling me now...I might have to make it a yearly trip. I can't wait to read more blog entries! Have fun, be safe, talk soon. |
| 23rd April 2007 OG | "crab circles" from the twilight zone.... - From: Sleeping, Swimming, and Sunsetting in Ao Nang Awesome pics...I continue to live the experience vicariously through your blogs.. Those crabs are most likely Scopimera or Sand Bubbler Crabs...they sift through the sand and eat all the small stuff and regurgitate these sand balls...not sure why the patterns but it is definitely is not random... |

| 20th April 2007 mom | thanks - From: The Museum of American War Crimes this birthday has been quite unique... extended family and friends -- really great. that fish looks like what is considered a delicacy here. it is dried and it really tastes good. had some at tita gigi's house. but then, the ones i had may have been skinnier. and therefore, may have been some other kind of fish. atis in ice cream? |

| 20th April 2007 Tom Nevers | museum is one sided - From: The Museum of American War Crimes War itself is an atrocity and the Americans were not alone. The VC and NVA themselves committed countless atrocities against their enemies, their own people and the people of their surronding countries. I doubt if you got to see any pictures of civilians murdered by the NVA and VC like the bodies of dead students on the grounds of the university in Hue during the Tet offensive. |

| 16th April 2007 Alea | Water economy! - From: Monkey bridges that lead to floating markets Wow... it's amazing how common entire communities based on water economies and trade "routes" are in other parts of the world-- and how frickin creative and effective they are! I mean, you'd think those boats are held together with spit and a prayer but they're clearly stronger than they look. We were on a cruise ship-- a full-size cruise ship --in the middle of the Nile and all these tiny canoe-looking boatsmen came paddling up out of nowhere, and started this whole barter and trade system. They'd throw shirts, dresses, tableclothes, whatever to the various floors of the ship (amazing aim, let me tell you) and you'd try them on or toss them back and yell for a different color, size, price.... Once you found what you wanted, you'd barter the price, tie the money in the plastic bag and toss it back down. If it landed in the water, no prob, they hand-paddled over and picked it up. It was wild; looks like this was too. Great posts! |

| 6th March 2007 james st. james | not so fun in santiago... - From: Six Bottles for $33: Concha y Toro Comes Through So We´re Sticking with Chile it's too bad you're not having a better time in santiago. it's not one of those cities that jumps out at you and sucks you in. you have to make a little effort and dig below the surface, something that isn't easy to do when travelling somewhere unfamiliar. santiago has a lot going for it, you just have to know where to find it. typical chilean food also takes an effort (except for seafood restaurants). i recommend the empanadas de pino (meat turnovers), pastel de choclo (which you had today, though i don't know if corn is in season), paila marina (mixed seafood stew), and of course pisco sours, or even piscola (pisco + cola) to drink. several places may have "chicha", and you should try it. it's a bit like a cider made from grapes. it's sweet and has a little less alcohol than wine. many restaurants also serve pitchers of wine with fruit. i recommend the white wine with chirimoya (custard apple). in valparaiso, the flat part of the city isn't that great. the true charm of the city is in its hills. i especially recommend wandering around cerro concepcion and cerro alegre. there's a tourist info booth right in the middle of the plaza sotomayor (the main square, in front of the navel building near the docks). just north of viña del mar is the town of Con Con. i really recommend the seafood eateries near the water, with some seafood empanadas the likes of which you'll never taste anywhere else (i especially recommend the cheese and seafood empanadas). i know you don't want to go to cerro san cristobal, the the neighborhood between the hill and the mapocho river (called barrio bellavista) has some good places to dance, eat, and drink (though it's more active on weekends). i can't believe you went to barrio suecia. it's so aceptic and has nothing of the chilean character. there are some interesting restaurants on cumming street (metro station republica, line 1, head north from the alameda, a little west of downtown). the half mile or so between the alameda and caterdral street on cumming ave. also has a few chinese restaurants. there's also a large and popula chinese restaurant on plaza brasil (barrio brazil is an older santiago neighborhood). anyway, good luck! |
| 6th March 2007 Mr. Harp | hectares? - From: Six Bottles for $33: Concha y Toro Comes Through So We´re Sticking with Chile I'd try to help converting the hectares, but I'm only good with length. Area? that's out of my league. I now have the urge to go hit up some wineries by the way. Too bad Baltimore isn't exactly wine country. |
