Sounds like you are having a good time. I was telling Gail re the leg hair and Jacob's day of sickness and she wants to know why these stories are part of your blogs. They just add to the adventures...and of course, Gail and I are all about the adventure. They must have some really weird phone system. I have tried to call several times and can't get thru. Will keep trying just so I can say, "I did it." Love ya! All is well here. MOM

Callin me Home - From: bonnie in scotland
Reading the tales of Scotland takes me back to my childhood, a grandfather who never lost his Scottich Accent. Being referred to as "wee", and nobody refers to me as "wee" anymore. I hear the pipes playing in my head and being told I couldn't listen to Harry Lauder's music because my Grama thought it was too off couor for a child. "THe mucking of Jordie's byre" translated as shovelling out of the cow shed. Too off color...go figure!!!! YOu make me know that I will go someday! Lokking forward to seeing you soon. Roberta

Bonnie, bonnie babes - From: bonnie in scotland
When I called your Holiday Inn Express last night and heard the Scottish brogue, I could feel my own come alive. I think it must be passed down thru the genes because my mother, Winifred Malloy, came to Canada when she was just a wee bonnie lass. But after years of listening to the elders of the family, it is really neat to hear something that resonates in your heart. It is like you are home again. So, I told you I should have been there to translate. I "get" it. I miss you both and look forward to seeing you later this week. And sharing more stories and pictures.

Chris' maternal grandmother was from Lochgelly in Scotland...so he made the trip there for me. He says there are very few Malloys there and Conway seems to be a name like Smith here. OK, I do believe in "free"...but when it means you can't sleep properly, then you can't adventure properly...so if one of you has to rent a bed elsewhere, do so!! HI Guys. My grandfather emigrated from Edinburgh and it is the one place I"ll see in my life. He never lsot his scottish accent and I was always the "wee baron". I'll be interested to get site seeing info from you at New Years. You should be knee deep in scottish short bread, empire cookies and apple charlottes at this time of the year. He was a baker so I'm up scottish Christmas treats and so is my current pant size. Enjoy and we'll be seeing you soon. Roberta

I can hardly believe you are at least a whole ocean away when our modern times allow us to converse so easily on the phone. I had a better line with you than I did earlier in the day with a guy just south of Sault MI. I still have time to pack and pick Bobby up on the way to the airport if you need 2 older ladies to help you get around Scotland. I know Bobby might not drive but I would be game, Meg!! Glad to know you are safe and sound...and now can converse with all the natives and read the menus again...even if you did end up in an Indian restaurant 2 days in a row. What about fish and chips or bangers and mash? Not vegan fare but Chris you could give it a try. Love ya!!

Once again I tell you... - From: Da LOOOOOOV-VER
...I could have come and carried your bags. I am so very jealous. I think that while Meg may have had a previous life in Italy, yours was in France, Chris. You just seem so comfortable with the language and the art. And can you believe it that here at 10 pm in Sault Ste. Marie and feeling lonely, the only one of "my kids" I could talk to was Meg in France. I was determined to reach out and talk to someone and it was really quite easy...so glad that there was someone at the hostel who picked up the phone this time. So if you need me to come to Scotland and help out in any way, just say the word...I will be there. Love ya!!

Oh, I am so, so jealous?? - From: maybe peeeeeek-chas
So when do I get a chance to go to Europe with you? I am oh so jealous of your youth, your health, your adventure!! These pics are the best. But they make me want to be there. I can see a few that will adorn my walls for sure. Missed your call at about noon here, I think. Must be dinner time for you at Arc de Triomphe. And in case it isn't in your guide books here is what it is all about. Will you follow the L'Axe historique?? ............The Arc de Triomphe is a monument in Paris, France that stands in the centre of the Place Charles de Gaulle, also known as the Place de l'Étoile. It is at the western end of the Champs-Élysées. The triumphal arch honors those who fought for France, particularly during the Napoleonic Wars. On the inside and the top of the arc there are all of the names of generals and wars fought. Underneath is the tomb of the unknown soldier from World War I. The Arc is the linchpin of the historic axis (L'Axe historique) — a sequence of monuments and grand thoroughfares on a route which goes from the courtyard of the Louvre Palace to the outskirts of Paris. The monument was designed by Jean Chalgrin in 1806, and its iconographic program pitted heroically nude French youths against bearded Germanic warriors in chain mail and set the tone for public monuments, with triumphant nationalistic messages, until World War I. The monument stands 49.5 metres (162 ft) in height, 45 metres (148 ft) wide and 22 meters (72 ft) deep. It is the second largest triumphal arch in existence. Its design was inspired by the Roman Arch of Titus. The Arc de Triomphe is so colossal that three weeks after the Paris victory parade in 1919, marking the end of hostilities in World War I, Charles Godefroy flew his Nieuport biplane through it, with the event captured in a newsreel. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triumphal_arch for info re other triumphal arches, including 4 in Canada.

Good to talk to you tonight, Chris. You can go back in a few years and see that Pedro is OK in his new surroundings. After Austria and Italy, you both need a good rest before you go on to Paris and the British Isles. Currently we are enjoying our visit with grand-kids Ben 14 & Cara, 12 & their parents Paul & Eileen. We had a fantastic view of the surrounding area hills from a walking trail we did with the 2 grand-dogs. I was singing myself as I read this blog... Edelweiss, Edelweiss Every morning you greet me Small and white, clean and bright You look happy to meet me Blossom of snow may you bloom and grow Bloom and grow forever Edelweiss, Edelweiss Bless my homeland forever Edelweiss symbolzes courage, truth and hope in our tumultuous world. Besides nursery rhymes, this is probably the only song I know the words to as Jacob and Chris can attest. So glad that you dissed the Chris and found your Sistah!! I would have done the same. So sing Edelweiss for me...and make sure you plan to visit Oxford when you go to England. We took the train all the way over from Milano just for the day to show them around. Our friends weren't disappointed. Watch out for "le pasticcerias". They are fatal if you are watching calories! Boy, have things changed since I traveled that neck of the woods years ago, laptops, private rooms & bathrooms. Its really neat to watch how they make hand blown glass. Also, This is for Chris ,some of the best street meat I ever ate was in Venice from a vendor selling some kind of sausage, good. I would be interested in knowing how far down the water level has gone in the past 20 years. Meg, the gondola ride is a must it would be like going to San Fransisco and not hopping on a streetcar. Sleep well whats craved in the walls stays in the walls Love Gail

I am living the best novel I've read in a long time. I rush to the computer to see if yu have posted new notes. I sit on the steps with you and enjoy the gypsy tension and I laugh through the Italian encounters with people who speak no english. My dream is to someday do Italy...I've seen pictures of the Almalphie coast that look so overwhelming. You are just feeding my hunger to take the holiday. Now that you are moving on I look forward to chapter 2. Love you guys..stay safe Roberta

I understand your awe at everthing so very different from back home, all the history & culture etc . So glad that we finally connected today. A hostel with a computer and TV in the room?? What kind of traveling is that? Remember to have "adventures"...if something doesn't meet your expectations, then just chalk it up to an adventure and enjoy the fact that you have seen and learned something new. I think of you often. Love MOM Sue

Have you been to the gypsy market? - From: oh me, oh my. firenze it is
When we were in Italy there was no room in Venice because of Holidays so after waiting hours in the train station we took a train at 4:00am to Florence and arrived at their station as the work day was starting. They were playing this rapid music over the pa system and everyone was rushing around like crazy. We went to the Hostel earlyand left our bags and off to the market we went. The next morning about 6:00 there was a great clatter in the alley below our room. The gypsy carts had been stored overnight in garages under the building!

Hi Chris & Meg Thanks for your updates. They were great. I was pleasantly surprized to see that Chris also has talent as a writer.Don't post too may pix at a time as there are tons of sites where you can get pix of famous places like the Vatican. A few original shots with a comment or two will keep people more interested. Also you don't need to write more. I find that people read e-mais quickly & miss a lot. Ciao amici, Tia Carole

Keep a paper bag handy!! - From: OH MY GOODNESS!!
Sounds like you both are seeing things you never could imagine. I told you Chris, that you were just a young thing and had lots of time to do whatever you want. I knew that you would find a reason for "passion" on this trip...sounds like it is happening already. So keep a paper bag handy in case of a panic attack. Breathe into it whenever you need to catch you breath...then onward to the next adventure.

Buongiorno Colombos - From: and roman we are
SalutiHi Chris & Meg Glad to hear that your experience is starting out so well in spite of the fatigue. It's hard the 1st few days but watch your intake of food & vino & your bodies will adjust more rapidly. Rachele & I stayed in a convent in Rome in 1993, right behind the Vatican. Unfortunately the pope Jean Paul had broken his arm so he was not appearing in public. But we had seen the previous pope back 1971 when Vince & I spent Xmas holidays in Italy with our 3 youngsters .Vince was then doing an MBA in Geneva ,where we lived . At the convent where we stayed while visiting Rome, the nuns even baby sat while we did our siteseeing! We love Italy & will be back there soon. Enjoy yourselves ! Ciao Zia Carole
