Last summer I went for 3 months to SE Asia, I searched a lot on what to bring. The advice was as numerous as the people offering it. Each of us is different with different needs. Mine are simple. Travel as light as possible. Theres something about getting off a train or bus with a fully loaded 60+ L backpack that just scares me. Especially if I don't have a room reserved. Lugging that thing around from hostel to hostel? no thank you! Last summer I decided to go with a 45L backpack and had a little room to spare in it. What I took for my 3 month trip to SE Asia; 1. 2 pairs of cargo shorts. Cargo shorts are more than just a backpacker fashion statement they are also very handy. The ones ... read more

I've figured out where and when I plan on going - Vietnam, Burma and India from May 23rd to August 29th. Next was getting the visas. Vietnam was pretty straight forward. I went through a Vietnamese travel agency, Tonkin Travel tonkintravel.com for my visa-on-arrival. 3 month multiple entry visa would cost $25 for the visa service and will cost $50 at the airport. $75 total for a 3 month visa? Nice. It cost me around $50 in Phenom Phen last summer to get a single entry visa. All I had to do was send them the day I was arriving and a copy of my passport. Tonkin was very fast and extremely friendly. I highly recommend them. India was very easy as well. I used the company that the Indian embassy in the U.S. uses as ... read more

Getting there is half the battle... I don't live near any major airports, so I first searched the cost of a ticket from where I live to Thailand and a round trip ticket was running around $1,500. A bit pricey and a couple hundred more than I payed last year to fly to Singpore and back from Beijing (muti-city flight) Next I checked from the nearest major airport - O'Hare in Chicago - and it was down to $1,250 round trip - a nice savings of $250. (flying Cathay Packific. I had never heard of them before I started searching) Now all I need to do is get to Chicago. Well it turns out thats easier than I thought it would be. I can take the Greyhound bus to the Cumberland Station in Chicago and from ... read more

I don't know about you, but I love to plan for a trip. I can spend hours looking online at places to visit, things to do, travel tips and advice, places to stay, getting around, checking airlines...well maybe not airlines. I'm in the planning stage now for my Summer 2012 trip to Vietnam, Myanmar (Burma) and India. Last summer I spent 3 months backpacking around SE Asia. Flying into Singapore - the mall of SE Asia, but a good place to get acclimated - then heading to Malaysia, Indonesia, Back to Singapore, back to Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, then up to Beijing China to fly back to the states. I gave myself 3 months, but it turned out I was a month short...I could only manage 7 days in China before the flight back. (Took ... read more
