I went to a conference hosted in Johburg for Round Square which is an organization “dedicated to empowering the youth.” The theme was Neva 2 Young 2 Lead, silly name amazing concept. I learned so much and had an amazing time meeting people from Ghana, Kenya, India, Australia and more South Africans. The conference was 3 days long and I don’t want to go into all the boring details, so here are a few highlights: •Aloysias Maimane (keynote speaker): My favorite part of his speech is where he talked about how one wants to have a legacy. You don’t want your funeral speech to be “he lies so and so, he lived and…. Had a Volvo.” His speech was not filled with demands on how one must better themself, but rather hypothetical questions meant for personal ... read more

The Matric Dance is an exclusive, extravagant dance only for matrices (seniors). Max asked if I would be his date. Since then I have been franticly looking for my perfect dress. With only a week left, I found a boutique. It was almost impossible for me to choose my dress because they were all amazing. Armed with my perfect dress, I was ready to have a marvelous night. Max picked me up at a friend’s house where we headed out to the pre-drinks party. The food was fabulous (duh), but the dresses were breath taking. We watched the sunset over the mountains and wine vineyard then headed out for the school. For an entrance couples can come together and rent a limo or find another way to impress the crowd. Max, proudly from Scotland, he wanted ... read more

I' m back! After recharging my batteries over the holidays I am back in school ready to see what this term has in store for me. But first Donny wants to know how my holiday went ;) Dad and Megan came and we had a blast! Experiencing new things like eating a 3 hour long dinner complete with wine and exotic new foods. We were frequently lost, but that did not stop us from having fun! We saw many different aspects of South Africa from their town ships to the wine vinyards to the megapopolis to the wildlife. The theme among the animals was love. Penguins were in their mating season and there was a mommy and baby rhino pair and Dad, Megan and I were having fun and loving the company. Vacationing with Delite was ... read more

I am spontaneously inspired to buy unneeded food when I am walking up and down the aisles in the grocery store. Today I saw a box that made burritos, and I could not resist. It is hard to live without Mexican food if u=you are accustomed to having it a couple times a month. I miss it. After I cut up the chicken, tomatoes and lettuce, I walked up to the cafeteria. The chef was more than happy to help me cook my chicken. Unsurprisingly, I was disappointed by the burritos. It was a like a South African was trying to make Mexican food… duh. However, the quesadilla I had for breakfast was incredible. Hooray for Mexican food!... read more

Hmm. It was a mandatory out weekend and I desperately needed time to myself… The natural conclusion is to go to a spa!! The only problem was that I had to reserve a room on short notice. I bit my nails while calling hotel after hotel. Finally, I found an open one. The Lanzerac. It was superb. There a complementary spa treatment, wine tasting, and breakfast. I took advantage of everything. Had a lot of firsts like my first massage, first wine tasting, first time alone in a hotel and first time to eat dinner in a restaurant alone. At first, I won’t lie, eating alone was frightening. By the end of my stay it did not bother me. Friendly people would sometimes start up a conversation about my book, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, ... read more

I do not have the appreciation for seeing the sun rise. All I see is the fact that I, once again, am up too early. I saw the sun rise both Tuesday and Wednesday in order to drive to Cape Town for Artscape. While there, I watched a comedian, 3 plays, 1 contemporary dance company, 1 dance/play/comedy, and attended three workshops. The actors were amazing, but the contemporary dancers frequently forgot parts of the routine, and I did not find their moves entertaining or intriguing (maybe it was because they had profound African influences in the dances and I could not fully appreciate it). Two of the plays were depressing and confusing plots that left everyone feeling confused, upset and depressed. On the upside, the dance/play/comedy was amazing. My workshops had potential, but psychotic drama teachers ... read more

Where are the good ol’ sugary cereals? Where is the air conditioner?? And where are my wheels???? There are a good number of things that I am desperately missing from back home. Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Cheerios, Lucky Charms. Yumm. Sharing is caring! Kellogg get your but into gear and start sending them on over! I cannot seem to get over the fact that people here survive without air conditioners. It baffles me. When is gets really hot in my math class upstairs, we just sit there dying, unable to move, think, or work. A car = freedom. Here there is no car. There is a schedule. Who wants a schedule EVERYDAY? Life needs spontaneity. That has to be what I miss the most from home, my ability to be spontaneous. What have you done recently that ... read more

To break out of the structure of the boarding house, and stretch your legs and enjoy your freedom is wonderful. Especially, when you know that you are about to have an amazing weekend with a new friend. Jess and I did so many things that I have never done like sit on a roof and watch the sun set, make pizza in a pizza oven at home, make our own cheese sauce for pasta, walk to a grocery store just to buy chocolate, and (my favorite) enjoy a day at the beach. In the movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Audrey Hepburn and her man have a whole day where they do things they have never done. That is how I feel that weekend and this whole trip is. One new experience after another. ... read more

What is a Gala? I had no idea until last week that it is a swim competition. Bridge House’s Red, Blue, and White Houses competed against each other. Nothing special happened... except for the fact that I SWAM, AND DID NOT LOSE! Now don’t get excited I am no Michael Phelps. I am ecstatic at the fact that with no training I came fourth in the freestyle. I had the same average results in breast stroke :D Nothing for me to be embaressed about! I love the fact that I can participate in anything and everything. It is wonderful. In fact, I just signed up to audition for the upcoming play! I do not expect nor want the lead part, but I am thrilled at the fact that I signed up, and may get a supporting ... read more

Children now need to learn English to have a good chance to succeed. That is why the Xhosa Reading program was founded. It brings together fluent English speakers with children who are just beginning to read. Since I have been here, I have been part of this program. I could not imagine a better way to spend my Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. Today was special. Nick was leading Simon Says then he laid down… in mud. We all started laughing at him because he had mud on his back, and he began freaking out. The best part is when Helanka smeared her fingers in the mud and wiped them on Nick’s back. She did this twice and then the kids decided to join. They ended up swarming him then he ran. Not the best move. 30 ... read more
