There are so many things going through my mind right now that I cannot even focus on any one of them. Most things center around... 1) getting visas and my passport and buying tickets for January... 2) finding a federal job for me upon returning... 3) getting Lenin´s English up to speed, teaching him to drive, finding work, dealing with January coldness for both of us, etc. Mostly that is what is going through my mind. Oh, and all the damn paperwork to finish my service here. So papers. Visas. Tickets. Jobs. The end. PS there are more photos on the previous entry of our trip to Wiwilí. ... read more

I´ll try and put the few photos that we took tomorrow. Also, Mom, before you read this and freak out, Lenin and I are fiiiiiiine and we are safe and sound here in Somoto-Moropoto. Suffice it to say that our long weekend trip to visit Lenin´s parents outside of Wiwilí, Jinotega, was a harrowing adventure. The trip started out normal. We got up at 3am and I took the world´s fastest bucket shower just to wake me the hell up and get the sleep out of my eyes and the birds nest out of my hair. Dressed in the dark (no lights in Moropoto at the time) and got to Mamita´s for coffee and bread at 3.40ish. Left with Hugo in his truck at 4.10 to catch the 4.30 bus so we could get off and ... read more

I am completely overwhelmed. I thought I knew what the next step in our life was, and then I went to the Peace Corps Close of Service conference and I am so confused. More about that later. Also, Lenin and I are going to Wiwili on Wednesday through Sunday. I have so many things going through my mind. What has these last two years in Nicaragua taught me? What have I brought to the table as a volunteer? What are we going to do in the States. Also, I am so angry. Angry with life in this village and angry with their sense of entitlement. Angry with the business practices that FAIL and how they make nothing being a small farmer and how they do not even DO THE MATH to seeeee how they are failing ... read more

Update... There were just under 600 photos taken in the weeks leading up to the wedding, the wedding, and after.... this is a SMALL VERY SMALL selection. Enjoy! I do not even know where to start! It's Wednesday morning. Mom Dad and Ben just left for the airport. Cassi and LB left the morning after the wedding and Liz left yesterday morning. So now all that are left of the eight are Kristy and Arielle. The wedding was awesome and went smoothly. I don't even know how to describe. Having problems with internet connection, which is why photos have not been uploaded yet. Working on that.... read more

Nicaragua Information Central Hotel Colonial in Somoto number is 8999.9266. The clerk Ariel speaks English. Hotel Panamericano in Somoto 2722.2355. There are not pay phones here. If necessary you need to ask to borrow somone´s cell phone to call or there are fono centers and places to call from cybers. (see spanish guide below) The USD to Nican Cordoba exchange rate is 21.20 or thereabouts. US dollars are accepted. For money, I would also bring your ATM card. Travellers checks are rare. Better with cash and ATM cards. People who exchange money on the street are legit and it is okay to change money with them. Just ask ¨Cual es su rato?¨ and he will have a calculator to show you the exchange rate. In Managua you have to take taxis, not busses. I am checking ... read more

Answers to Aunt Lori´s comment and Jeri´s comment. We expect about 500 people to watch the parade and hang out in the non-catholic, evangelical, church during the wedding. We have invited about 160 people and have ordered 175 plates for the private reception. Thank you for the thoughts! Jeri! Yes, call and see if there are rooms at Colonial first and then check out Panamericano 2nd. ............. I am exhaaaaausted. I came into Estelí to get stuff done. First went directly to Doña Moncha´s to give her one of the USA bags that Mom sent me, and to finally give her a wedding invite and see how many people will be coming. I only stayed for like an hour, but it was going on noon by the time I got back into Estelí. Went to the ... read more

Okay, feeling better. Man Dengue sucks. Felt like a truck hit me during the night for about a week. Am in Esteli for a hot minute to meet new volunteers and tell them how awesome Somoto is (i am rolling my eyes) and convince one of them to come to a site near me in August. By the way, where is the time goooooing?! My family is coming in LESS THAN TWO WEEKS! Which means the rest of you are coming in like 3 weeks! WTF?! And then we get married and you all fly home and then the new volulnteers get in and then we have our Close of Service Conference in August, too.....and then I turn 28 in September and then Halloween in October and November is for graduations and goodbye parties since my ... read more

Yup. Dengue Fever. Awesome. Have to stay in Managua tonight, too. Hopefully can go back to Moropoto tomorrow. Well. Friday things started to go downhill. Our dog, Huesita, died. Lenin and I have had her for over a year and it was not a pretty death. So that sucks. Then that night a fever hit me.... and it hasn't let up. Saturday Sunday Monday and today, Tuesday. Sunday I woke up with a heat rash all over my body, too. Everyone said it's "calentura" or basically a cold/flu. But that usually is like a 24 hour sort of thing. Not a four day thing. So after getting up today and still feeling like a truck hit me in the middle of the night, I came to Managua. I got here late in the afternoon so had ... read more

Well, it's official. I am half Nicaraguan. I don't feel too different, except that I feel I have more clout with the family and in Nicaragua. Okay, with no further ado, photos.... The judge preached for a few minutes before the actual signing, also reading from the Nican constitution, and then preaching more. Key points include.... relationships need communication, respect, honesty, and fidelity. Men who hit women have a psychological problem and, really, a husband should not hit a wife because he is not her father, he is her husband. Same goes for the wife. She cannot beat her husband because she is not his mother, but his wife.... (it's okay for parents to hit their kids...). Fidelity was a big point, since so many Nican men have queridas. Also, she preached about how she never ... read more
