I.... - From: of getting ready for the holidays, living without electricity, and a few random thoughts
I tried to phone you this AM, before turning on the puter. NOW I know why I couldn't get you! I don't know what the message in Spanish is telling me, so I just left a message in hopes that you'd not just get a blank! We, too, are down to counting HOURS, almost!!!! Of course, your Dad wants to have the honor of picking you guys up at the airport!! Will be there with COATS in hand! Ha! Frustrating last minute teeny things......like, CARPET!!!!!! "IF" it arrives today or tomorrow, Sammy will have it laid before you get here. If not,......then just NOT. :( With all of these projects going at the same time and all trying to beat the deadline of your arrival, I'm just so afraid that you'll see UNFINISHED PROGRESS. I hope that you and Lenin aren't "TOO" disappointed. Can hardly wait!!!!!!!!!xo

Hey!! I was just going back a ways in your blog and rereading it, when,.....How in the world did I totally miss this one!!!!??? Very very nice. Good captions. Molly, sounds weird coming from your own Mom, I know, but the above shot captioned "headshot".........seriously.....I had to look at it 3 times before I could even believe that it was YOU with Lenin! GEEZ......you look so good in all of your pictures!! Am beginning to think that, seriously, a good ol' year of beans&rice&beans&rice&beans&rice&anegg&someveggies could do absolute wonders for ME! I could SO use your diet (w/o the innerd-bugs, of course!) xoxoxo

Yes, we have a good selection of coats, jackets, mittens, gloves, hats, and mufflers! Believe it or not, it's turned into WINTER up here. Had still been picking s l o w cherry tomatoes on Sat., a week ago; then on Sun. it finally frosted them out (though low Petunias are still blooming!); and now we have had COLD rain all day long with a teeny flurry of snow here and there in the air. Tomorrow night it's supposed to clear off and get down to 12*! The wind is REALLY blowing outside now, so feels even colder! Oh!, and I have LOTS of sweaters and sweatshirts (& 3 decent pairs of sweatpants that I've located as of now) for both of you to wear. Yes,...."It's beginning to FEEL a lot like Christmas!" Like, THIRTEEN DAYS, but who's counting!!?? Heard from Jeri and Jay?

What does your shirt say, on your picture titled, "walking down the road"? Is that Tweety Bird?? Molly, I often notice that the number of plastic chairs on the porches is close to the number of like on OUR patio; are these chairs hauled clear up from Managua? I even recall seeing them WAAAY up on another mountain on Lenin's folks' porch. Just curious!

Hope we're everything that you've built us up to be!! This will be SOOOOO fun! You know, they say "absence makes the heart grow fonder...."; well, IT IS TRUE!! Hope you'll not be disappointed with your whole "home adventure". I'm just expecting that Lenin thinks everything up 'here' is perfect. Well, we're tryin'!!! Love you!

Have just been looking at the above pictures. Again. For the nth time! Ha! Oh, little Puppy and Huesita do look cute.....BUT SOOOO skinny. Seriously, Honey, I've been eying some HUGE luggage for you guys to haul back with you! What, again, is the weight limit? Like, 40 lbs., right? 45? Plus a big ol' bag of dog food! I sometimes (ALWAYS) now feel guilty that we now own 4 dogs and manage to feed all of them. The wild Marigolds are beautiful. Can hardly believe that they smell just like ours. How good is that! The other picture of the wild local flowers.....could you possibly get a closer shot of them? They resemble flowers that I saw growing in a large keg up at condos on Dianna's route! OK. Another entry as I'm out of space! xo

OK. Thank you for already having the answers to my new questions! Wow -- 200 volunteers in Nicaragua at present????? Guess I had totally forgotten that there were that many of you there all at once! Molly, just TOTALLY ENJOY your little luxuries! You've certainly earned every degree of AC, every drop of hot water at your fingertips, and every taste of non-traditional food! Sounds like you're marrying into one fine family...our best to you...I think the two of you will do well...your past references to you and Lenin being best of friends says it all...too many young people get absorbed in sex and get married because of it...if you are going to share space with someone you had best be best of friends or that space will get to be awfully crowded...you can get sex on any street corner...true friends are rare! Getting close to our departure for CR...heading up to St Louis on the 9th to visit Heather (our daughter) and Andy for a couple of days before heading out on the 11th. My brother Cal is going to meet us at the airport when we get there and chauffuer us around...will probably park our butts in Cartago initially...then wander around the country and see where we want to live out the rest of our lives. Will do our best to come visit you after we get down there. Will need to get settled first. Need to have a Costa Rican address before starting the "Pensionado" paperwork so will be quite busy for awhile. nos vemos luego, los ticos nueves

Dear dear Molly, - From: what i do as a pcv
I was rereading some of your blog entries thus far. It sounds to me like you and Lenin contribute a great great deal to the family (i.e. work, water hauling, wood hauling, many groceries, garden, supplies, etc.). As I read your entries over, I began to realize where your ever-so-meager income goes. Sounds like it goes mostly to living expenses. Had the Tempo during high school, no car during your 4 years of college (including your times in China), no car in India and Goa, no car working in Philly, half a car (borrowing Arielle's) in Memphis, Kia for a short time delivering mail here, and no car in Nica! Oh, my Molly Bethy.......we love you and miss you so very much, too. You know how weird TIME is....seems like it was last week that you were here, but at the same time,....it seems like YEARS and YEARS. *YOU'VE* always been the one who has been away......not us. So, things kinda stay the 'same ol, same ol' around here, with changes of age mostly, while you're away and around the world and doing and experiencing things that we know of only through you. You go away and you age and you experience and you grow and you change. Sometimes it's impossible for us to totally relate to you and your growing world, with things staying relatively stable around here. In a positive, but slightly selfish way, it's nice that you miss our humble homelife here. Time to come home!!!!!!!!!!

farm animals - From: goats and rabbits and worms oh my!
Back when we had the farm (70s&80s) we had pigs and goats and rabbits, too! My favorite were the goats especially during kidding time! They are such cute babies and they really have GREAT personalities. Our daughter, Heather was practically raised by them. If you couldn't find her just go out to the barn and there she would be, all snuggled up asleep in a pile of goats in the sun. Did you get to eat any rabbit? I make a killer smothered rabbit. Also just once make a flan out of goats milk and farm eggs!!! yum yum

The "early Mother's Day" shoes are totally a hit.....#1 - with ME, and #2 - with our Nebraska family and everyone else that I saw/met while up there to see Granddad for his 82nd birthday! Oh, yeah, they've already got many many miles, lots of bug spray, fresh cow crap, goat droppings, and fireworks smells on them! Ha! - and they wash up beautifully! Thank you, Molly; I love them - a cushy ride! Also, just a couple of days after the thongs arrived (yes, that's what my sisters & I will forever still call them!!! ), we got an envelope with the 2nd book about Nicaragua, the GREAT map, and the Nintendo magazine for Ben! Haven't seen him long enough yet to see if he's been reading it, though; he's turned into a social busybusybusy person. Tennis morning (day off), then a 'day out' with Donna for a summer look at The Strip. Love you! xo

Wow! Thanks for the reality check on how quickly time passes.......however, sometimes it seems that you've been gone forever! We live, we grow, we change. Daily. It's been so fun for me, as your Mother, Molly, to have shared in some of your changes. I do read back into your earlier blogs occasionally, and it's always exciting to listen to you grow. And change. I am SO anticipating the next time when we get to talk face-to-face. Miss you. Love you. And,....YES!!! More beach time!!! Definitely!! xo

Will be in the mail heading for Nicaragua tomorrow AM! NICE NICE NICE to have the 4th of July on a Saturday and have 2 whole days (CLOUDY DAYS, oh YES!!!!) to be in the garden and the yard! Ahhhh

very very interesting - From: el espino, border between nica and honduras
Guess I'd love to hear more details about Lenin's border patrol job (i.e. guarding the border from what, for example? drug smuggling? illegals crossing? guns? terrorist groups?). What happens to a 'suspect' once he is apprehended? Does Nicaragua have a justice system comparable to ours, with courts and juries and representation for the accused? Would you consider their sentencing harsher than ours or more tolerant? ..................just curious!

Oh yay! I'm so glad it got there safely. And quickly! Damn. Maybe I'll start putting Customs declarations on my letters, too, in case they think I'm trying to send something very flat but very dangerous. (The dreaded mail shark? I dunno.) Did the food make it too? Can you cook it? My brother says he uses that kind of food when he's camping, so I thought it might work OK on the stove. And the US tried to assassinate Chavez? Holy cow, NZ is really far away. Not even a whisper down here. I hope everything is going well!

Christmas - From: god has it only been 4 days in site since thankgiving? time moves so sloooowwwwwly here
I thought the only Latin American group that does not believe in christmas are those in the Jehovah's Witnesses religion (They are called Testigos de Jehova). So if your host family is Catholic then they for sure believe in Christmas, However economical condition might be the reason why they dont to ornaments and stuff in their house. You know Cristmas is a very expensive time of the year here in USA and even worst in Nicaragua. This could be an good opportunity for you to have a cultural exchange with them by showing them a little of your christmas something simple like putting up a little christmas tree in the house or maybe baking a pie for them. They would appreciate that. Anything you do just try to enjoy it as much as you can. Happy holidays, hopefully you dont mind me reading your blogs and leaving you notes :)

How nice and refreshing.......the idea of a restaurant growing it's own food. YES,...HE DID! - From: ¡¡¡¡eeee!!!!! obamanos! ... i am so damn proud to be an american.
Yep, I believe that, in the very end, McCain won out in MissourI; but it WAS very close. Even yet the 'morning after' on the nat'l TV channels, MissourI was still just gray (i.e. undecided). I'm so proud of my fellow MissourIans, ....you being one of them! Think I'll send your blog to Pres.-Elect Obama!

The day of the death - From: day of the dead in the nica
I couldnt help to post about your entry. Very interesting but I think the day of the dead is actually a Catholic holiday called All Souls Day or All Saint's Day I am not sure. But I think it is celebrated by all the catholic communities around the world, not just in Latin America. Anyway I will take a look on what Kikipedia has to say about it and I'll let you know. Good luck with the Chanchos and la letrina bye

You are the best daughter in the whole wide world, Molly! Thank you so much for the phone call! Just enjoyed your blog, so some of the 'blanks' have been filled in. Yes, 'new' is sometimes exciting, but 'familiar' brings contentment.....will be nice when you begin to "fit in" with your new family more, and they get to know you! Hot here, too; like 76* for last & next few days. Wish your new Mama luck w/the election! Love You!

Air conditioning sucks you damn whiners. Don't you have your windows closed long enough during the winter? Stop living in a cave you damn wimps. Unless its is getting over 100° or maybe in the mid 90°s with high humidity there isn't much reason to have it on. If you want to be cold just wait, winter will be back shortly & you can go stick you head in a snow drift.

So she lay on her bed all dead and she doesn't do anything at all? Is her computer on? what is she reading? This is a mystery, you have to get to the bottom of it. I think it is time for you to go up to her and ask her.

Yay, I can comment! - From: answers and sunday plans
So I'm at T minus roughly 72 hrs and counting. It's just started to hit me that I'm going. I think it's because everything is being taken care of for the group. We don't actually have to do anything ourselves, which, yes, is nice, but I'd really like to make plans myself so that I can appreciate it more...not complaining though. Also, I don't think I've told you. I got a paper proposal accepted to the International Society for Travel Writing conference of the South Atlantic Modern Language Association. The panel is called "Race and Mobility in Southern Travel Writing" I proposed a paper about interracial couples in Charleston, SC, and they accepted! Which I totally wasn't expecting, and now don't actually have the paper, still just the proposal. Also the convention is in November, and hopefully I'll be in Abu Dhabi that time. But either way, it's good news. Peace out!

Hostel - From: this hostel is crizacked
As promised, babes, I am reading this blog religiously! Are you staying at the hostel right next to that fabulous Belgian pizza place (name escapes me right now)? Behind that random hospital? Have you HAD the pizza yet? Yummm... The mall that's going up... is that the one that was basically in the beginning stages when we left? At the north west corner of Sanlitun and Gongti Beilu? I'm interested in knowing how much of it is done.... we all know that building are literally THROWN up over there lol. Answer that in your next blog xoxox

The Bookworm and the Bible! - From: more on: jetlag, single serving friends, hostel
Omigod... The Bookworm. You know, I haven't lived in the Beij since April '07 and I'm STILL on the Bookworm mailing list. I just can't bring myself to request they remove me. And the Bible... the foreigners guide to ALL things Beijing. Would not have survived without it.
