Reading...a lost art! - From: BOOKS and AUTHORS and Books read during Peace Corps Service
I was always a Steinbeck fan and JeriAnn an Anne Rice fan. Am currently looking for Blood of Brothers (from your list). I firmly believe that all gringos (and most especially those involved in Latin America in any way) should read OPEN VEINS OF LATIN AMERICA by Eduardo Galeano. Hugo Chavez gave Pres. Obama a copy - shame he didn't read it! Se buena! Jay

Molly, Have been following this very closely since we returned to Houston last week. I pray for your safety and the safety of your friend. Please keep us posted on what is happening as the news is very sketchy. Which clinic that we held was closest to where LasManos is? Stay safe! Chris Priska Centers of Hope Mission Medical Director

More turmoil... - From: of another chagas tale & of a confrotation at the border
He didn't give me any specific details that he might have happened to read in the Sunday KC Star newspaper this morning, but your Dad did say that there was more turmoil. What have you heard since your last CNN report? Anything from the PC yet? Love you, Molly! I do so admire your commitment,....but you're only one sentence away from being back in MO,....anytime of the day or night, you know. Sounds like you're right in the direct pathway of trouble, being between Estelli and the Honduran border.

Well, the news..... - From: of another chagas tale & of a confrotation at the border
Well, so you've heard what CNN has to say, and I, too, would be, like, FRANTIC about Lenin up guarding the border AND about all of you that are up to the North so far. What has the Peace Corps said about these safety issues?? Any word from them yet? You have other volunteers up in those mountains, too, right? It all sounds so very close to you (Estelli!!) and so volatile!! Yes, I agree. And while at the cardiologist, have him point you toward the thyroid man; OK? Love you, Molly.

I'm so glad you liked Shantaram; it reminded me of you in a real but totally non-literal way. If that makes sense. And it is just a very popular book down here. The author is an Aussie, and so this book is a bestseller on his home turf, but I've never seen it in the Northern Hemisphere. (Not that I've looked.) And thanks for posting your reading list! I'm looking for a few ideas to get me through the rest of this winter, and many of these look wonderful.

Seed bank - From: seed bank proposal
Molly, Great idea...and most needed for sure. I just returned from Porta Cabeza yesterday and came to the same conclusion. Perhaps we can work together and inject some love to a future of food autonomy for these wonderful people. I will be returning to Nicaragua in a few weeks (3 to 5) to start a permaculture demonstration project in Porta Cabeza and could bring down some extra seeds for you. Please let me know if this would be convient for you and if you still are in need for more seeds. Is your location anywhere near Porta Cabezas or Blue Fields? Keep up the great work Molly, Ben

farm animals - From: goats and rabbits and worms oh my!
Back when we had the farm (70s&80s) we had pigs and goats and rabbits, too! My favorite were the goats especially during kidding time! They are such cute babies and they really have GREAT personalities. Our daughter, Heather was practically raised by them. If you couldn't find her just go out to the barn and there she would be, all snuggled up asleep in a pile of goats in the sun. Did you get to eat any rabbit? I make a killer smothered rabbit. Also just once make a flan out of goats milk and farm eggs!!! yum yum

Hey! Did I tell you that....... - From: a year in country coming up in a couple of months
The "early Mother's Day" shoes are totally a hit.....#1 - with ME, and #2 - with our Nebraska family and everyone else that I saw/met while up there to see Granddad for his 82nd birthday! Oh, yeah, they've already got many many miles, lots of bug spray, fresh cow crap, goat droppings, and fireworks smells on them! Ha! - and they wash up beautifully! Thank you, Molly; I love them - a cushy ride! Also, just a couple of days after the thongs arrived (yes, that's what my sisters & I will forever still call them!!! ), we got an envelope with the 2nd book about Nicaragua, the GREAT map, and the Nintendo magazine for Ben! Haven't seen him long enough yet to see if he's been reading it, though; he's turned into a social busybusybusy person. Tennis morning (day off), then a 'day out' with Donna for a summer look at The Strip. Love you! xo

Wow! Thanks for the reality check on how quickly time passes.......however, sometimes it seems that you've been gone forever! We live, we grow, we change. Daily. It's been so fun for me, as your Mother, Molly, to have shared in some of your changes. I do read back into your earlier blogs occasionally, and it's always exciting to listen to you grow. And change. I am SO anticipating the next time when we get to talk face-to-face. Miss you. Love you. And,....YES!!! More beach time!!! Definitely!! xo

Found your DEATHPROOF MONK, finally. Was with 'another pile' of your brother's "stuff that is totally where I mean for it to be and no one - NO ONE, MOM! - should ever even think of moving even one single piece of it or you'll mess me up for life" piles. Will be in the mail heading for Nicaragua tomorrow AM! NICE NICE NICE to have the 4th of July on a Saturday and have 2 whole days (CLOUDY DAYS, oh YES!!!!) to be in the garden and the yard! Ahhhh

Very very nice, Molly. Our printer is definitely substandard; however, I've printed a couple of copies to share. I plan to take one to the Post Office tomorrow with me when I go to work. Think I might just send Granddad a copy, too, since he doesn't have access to your blog online. THANK YOU!! xo

very very interesting - From: el espino, border between nica and honduras
Guess I'd love to hear more details about Lenin's border patrol job (i.e. guarding the border from what, for example? drug smuggling? illegals crossing? guns? terrorist groups?). What happens to a 'suspect' once he is apprehended? Does Nicaragua have a justice system comparable to ours, with courts and juries and representation for the accused? Would you consider their sentencing harsher than ours or more tolerant? ..................just curious!

Oh yay! I'm so glad it got there safely. And quickly! Damn. Maybe I'll start putting Customs declarations on my letters, too, in case they think I'm trying to send something very flat but very dangerous. (The dreaded mail shark? I dunno.) Did the food make it too? Can you cook it? My brother says he uses that kind of food when he's camping, so I thought it might work OK on the stove. And the US tried to assassinate Chavez? Holy cow, NZ is really far away. Not even a whisper down here. I hope everything is going well!

I just haven't commented anything in a really long time, and this was just such an upbeat post, I just felt like I needed to say something. I'm in the same boat as you with all the people on vacay. Also I've done nothing regarding seeds, but I do have plans to. I just haven't quite gotten around to it yet. If nothing else, I at least want to send some. I'll try to get on that by July.

Um, HELLO?? It's nice for the MAILMAN when you know his/her name, ALSO! Ha! So, Molly, is there any specific seed or type of seed that you could use more of? When is "planting season" over and growing season begins? Guess there's no frost or ice there to worry about. Just curious! What day is Lenin's birthday?

Hi Molly. Leave here on Wednesday around noon to St. Louis and then to Nicaragua on Thursday. I am really excited and can hardly wait. We are flying into Managua and then to Granada before going to Jinoteag - or at least I think that is the schedule. And I man not be spelling the names of the cities correctly. Hope it works out that we can see you. Judy

I'm so sorry. Bugs don't bit your Dad, but they find Ben & me to be just delicious! I hope to send "stuff" down w/Ann & Judy for you. You MIGHT actually be in less misery when the rains start & you have to live in black rubber boots! Who knows?! If this DOES go this way, let me know & I'll send a dark blue pair, same size as yours (and an envelope of tire patches, in case!). Love you. More soon.

rain, rain, go away,........ - From: of training a nican man
Ugh! LOTS of rain up here, too, lately. Today was Memorial Day and I felt so sorry for so many FT's. We've had some good moments, but have had lots of rain for the big Summer Kick-Off weekend. Our patio was TOTALLY submersed TWICE today from the gully-washers. Front yard looked like a creek. SOOOO glad today was a holiday and we were inside doing plumbing (ha) and not out delivering mail in this! Do you need more baggies/garbage bags/a tarp???

Project Concern International - From: biodigestors, biolatrines, help?
Hi! I just happened to run across your blog on google and love reading it since I work with a non-profit based out of the U.S. that has a project in Jinotega...you've probably heard of it already but Project Concern International has a project in Jinotega where they "model" projects like the biolatrine. You can actually visit their farm, see how everything works, and figure out what materials/supplies you'll need to start implementing. Might be helpful to you!

Guess you're just lucky that this Swine Flu didn't start attacking and killing people BEFORE you got to make your (free) trip up to Mexico City to see Arielle for a week, huh? I am so sorry, though, that she is leaving for this type of reason (as opposed to just being free to choose her own time schedule). Mostly, though, I am just so grateful that, at the moment, you are both still healthy and flu-free! Tamiflu for SARS, Swine Flu.......so glad that it currently works on these horrid new diseases. How about Your People....all OK so far?? XOXOXO
