Guess it really WAS a special day! Every now and then your life down there reminds me a little of the summer that we moved down here and lived in our tent til it was too cold to stay out there! Yep, someday in the not-so-far-away-future, you'll look back and realize what a fun and important part you've played in in the lives of so many others. So proud of, and happy for, you, Molly! |
| 11th October 2009 Mom | What.... - From: ¨oh screw other people. do what makes you happy. it's your life.¨ -mhoyt WHAT FUN!! WHAT GREAT TIMING FOR ALL OF THIS INSPIRATION! I'm always so glad that you take the time to put this stuff down in writing. You'll have fun rereading it over the years! |
| 11th October 2009 Mom | TWENTY-SEVEN!!!!!! - From: went better the 2nd time around 27, in the Peace Corps, in Nicaragua, on a mountain, IN LOVE, engaged to be married!, coming HOME FOR CHRISTMAS and bringing (hopefully!) Lenin!!!!! OMG, Molly,....in just a couple of blinks of an eye, everything changes, huh? And for you,...adjusting IS your life! You're a PRO at it --- a natural! You have ALWAYS just amazed me! Why, when your Dad & I moved from NE to MO, it was one of the biggest changes of my life. Then, when we had YOU (27 years ago,..or 27 minutes ago, it seems sometimes,...that was the biggest change EVER! You own the WORLD,...and we made it from NE to MO! Ha! Kinda funny sometimes,......life! (yeah, ramble ramble ramble, huh?!). Well, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, my Molly! Love you so!! Mom |
| 6th October 2009 Jay Cahail | be there soon - From: ran away to the beach We get on the airplane Sunday and will be in San Jose Mon. morning...brother Cal is meeting us there...will try to find a temporary roof to rent then travel the country to try and find an area that truely suits us (and that we can afford)...and, of course the first few days will probably be spent checking out the beach areas...much too expensive for our pocketbook but have to get some fun in the sun...may not be able to get up to Nicaragua right away but will visit as soon as possible. la paz, los ticos nuevos |
| 29th September 2009 Cassi | HAPPY B-DAY! - From: ¨oh screw other people. do what makes you happy. it's your life.¨ -mhoyt Dude, you might get to build a stove?! You should totally stay for that ;) Whatever you do, I'm sure it will be the right decision. |

| 23rd September 2009 Wendy Brownell | - From: things i love and things i don't love Viva el amor! no te des por vencida! :) |
| 19th September 2009 Jay Cahail | nice people - From: i´m back Sounds like you're marrying into one fine family...our best to you...I think the two of you will do well...your past references to you and Lenin being best of friends says it all...too many young people get absorbed in sex and get married because of it...if you are going to share space with someone you had best be best of friends or that space will get to be awfully crowded...you can get sex on any street corner...true friends are rare! Getting close to our departure for CR...heading up to St Louis on the 9th to visit Heather (our daughter) and Andy for a couple of days before heading out on the 11th. My brother Cal is going to meet us at the airport when we get there and chauffuer us around...will probably park our butts in Cartago initially...then wander around the country and see where we want to live out the rest of our lives. Will do our best to come visit you after we get down there. Will need to get settled first. Need to have a Costa Rican address before starting the "Pensionado" paperwork so will be quite busy for awhile. nos vemos luego, los ticos nueves |
| 11th September 2009 Jay Cahail | tickets - From: schtuff happenin´ ... actual update Check with Taca airlines on flights from San Jose, CR. Our tickets cost us $378 (round trip). In fact, if you are willing to fly under our names (and they'll let you), you could use our return tickets since we won't need them. The flight leaves San Jose 5:35 pm Sat. Nov. 14 with layovers in Ciudad Guatemala & Chicago - gets into St. Louis 8:05 am on Sunday. Flight #640 |
| 11th September 2009 Jay Cahail | camera - From: not so much lovin the nica right now Sorry your camera got stolen...if you can get film down there I have a 35mm I'd be happy to send you (or, if you can wait another month, bring to you when we hit Costa Rica)...don't have a digital camera to spare but if you're a photography nut you more than likely prefer a "real" camera...several lenses with it (zoom, telephoto, etc,) |
| 11th September 2009 Jay Cahail | Chavez - From: mail from new zealand and other random info Why is it that the U. S. Govt is always trying to assasinate any leader that is for the working man instead of the multinational corporations????? |
| 10th September 2009 Eric Chaffee | cheap tickets - From: schtuff happenin´ ... actual update Check out sidestep [dot] com. Consider flying from Tegus! |
| 26th August 2009 Mom | This,... - From: what i do as a pcv Molly, I am so sorry that you're "down" this minute; however, this was a very very interesting entry!...very full of great info. And lots of thought. I feel as though you're doing a self-evaluation of your life so far in the Nica. Sounds like you're doing well, huh>??! xo |
| 26th August 2009 Mom | ARGH! - From: what i do as a pcv Today is August 26th (Cindy's birthday). I mailed the camera on the 11th! WHERE IN THE WORLD IS IT!!!???? Am nearly ready to go and buy ANOTHER one and get it in the mail......just in case! |
| 26th August 2009 Mom | Dear dear Molly, - From: what i do as a pcv I was rereading some of your blog entries thus far. It sounds to me like you and Lenin contribute a great great deal to the family (i.e. work, water hauling, wood hauling, many groceries, garden, supplies, etc.). As I read your entries over, I began to realize where your ever-so-meager income goes. Sounds like it goes mostly to living expenses. No wonder you're strapped for ca$h, not to mention any left for $avings! |
| 26th August 2009 Mom | OK, - From: visas and the need to restock and rejuvenate OK. Will have the apples and cheese waiting. And the hot water heater turned on high. Keep us posted! Are you bothered with ticks down there? Chiggers? You mention mosquitos by the million, but haven't heard you talk about ticks and/or chiggers. No worries; I'll have the OFF! ready for ya! |
| 26th August 2009 Mom | PEPSI??? - From: of gardens and corn and tamales Pepsi?? Ha Ha! I am amazed each and every day at the contradictions of your life down there. You carry all of your water; you use a latrine dated 1922; you do your laundry on a rock in a creek; etc. AND YET....you drink Pepsi; you sit on Wal-Mart-type plastic chairs; your family has a Nintendo system (but no frig!); etc. Yes, help them with the barrell oven before you leave the PC. And the "new" latrine. Good goals to leave as a legacy, Dear. XO |
| 26th August 2009 Mom | Strange... - From: immigration to the states In a different way, it's kinda strange how you see, every day, the illegal immigrant side of of the story that is so very news-worthy up here right now. Huh? Makes it 'personal'. |
| 26th August 2009 Mom | Yes, - From: every time i see a business i think about how i could do it better YES!!!!!, Elissa!! You guys would be GREAT at that! Keep those wheels in gear! |
| 26th August 2009 Mom | "Come on up!" - From: immigration to the states Yes, WE ARE SOOOOOO ready for you guys to come up! Anything we can do to help with the Visa? You know, Molly, you have actually been a DRIVER OF A VEHICLE a relatively SHORT time of your life, huh? Had the Tempo during high school, no car during your 4 years of college (including your times in China), no car in India and Goa, no car working in Philly, half a car (borrowing Arielle's) in Memphis, Kia for a short time delivering mail here, and no car in Nica! BTW....is your license still valid?? Do you even have it with you down there? Or, do I need to find it before you come home? Hmm...hadn't thought of it until now. |
| 26th August 2009 Mom | Oh, man...... - From: of gardens and corn and tamales I am so sorry about the onion seeds failure to grow! You had specifically requested them -- a great idea, though seeds had never really occurred to me. Will have to send more and see if maybe it was just that batch or somethin. Molly!!! Just came to me....NOW your true "Nebraska Cornhusker" heritage has come to pass! Ha! Who ever would have guessed that it would be in NICARAGUA, though!! Somehow reminds me of FOREST GUMP, only with corn instead of SHRIMP!....roasted corn, baked corn, fried corn, corn on the cob, etc. Love you! |
| 26th August 2009 Mom | Oh,...... - From: visas and the need to restock and rejuvenate Oh, my Molly Bethy.......we love you and miss you so very much, too. You know how weird TIME is....seems like it was last week that you were here, but at the same time,....it seems like YEARS and YEARS. *YOU'VE* always been the one who has been away......not us. So, things kinda stay the 'same ol, same ol' around here, with changes of age mostly, while you're away and around the world and doing and experiencing things that we know of only through you. You go away and you age and you experience and you grow and you change. Sometimes it's impossible for us to totally relate to you and your growing world, with things staying relatively stable around here. In a positive, but slightly selfish way, it's nice that you miss our humble homelife here. Time to come home!!!!!!!!!! |
| 24th August 2009 vicki | I can understand - From: visas and the need to restock and rejuvenate Man I can understand all of that, has to be stressful being separated from all that you know and love for so long and under those conditions! |
| 23rd August 2009 Judy Lynch | How Wonderful - From: schtuff happenin´ ... actual update We are so happy for you . Alittle to far for us to come for the wedding but let us know what we can send as a gift or what you would like as a gift. |
| 23rd August 2009 Mom | um,... - From: every time i see a business i think about how i could do it better Ummm,...like, YEEEEEEAH, guess you have plenty to keep you occupied! AND, build a brand new latreen (sp?) with some real air vents and post-1922 pit!! Ha! OK, short email to follow. xo |
| 23rd August 2009 sara costanza | Great idea! - From: seed bank proposal Hello Molly: I love your seed bank idea and the chance to empower the women too! Do you know my daughter Danielle? She is a Peace Corp volunteer (new to her site) in El Hatillo, Telica, Leon. She is raising money to buy seeds, but your idea is fantastic. I will send you some seeds. I am so excited about your work! May God's blessings be on you and your village as you strive to make a positive difference! Peace and love. |
| 20th August 2009 Elissa | me too! - From: every time i see a business i think about how i could do it better I think the same thing! Maybe post-Peace Corps you and I should be small business consultants. Or micro-finance managers. I'm so happy for you, Baade! |
| 11th August 2009 Mom | hmmmm,.... - From: schtuff happenin´ ... actual update Sounds like all GOOD NEWS this time, except for the camera (and btw, a replacement is on its way to you as we 'speak')! Can hardly wait to meet Lenin, though feel as though I almost "know" him by now through you! ***Anyone out there have any edge on the cheapest flights to/from Managua to Missouri???????????*** Molly, I still have people asking me about sending seeds your way; it's an on-going project, right?! With any and all seeds-for-the-future welcome? |
| 11th August 2009 Zeeke | Wow!! - From: schtuff happenin´ ... actual update Congratulations on your engagement. That is a big step in life, and the day you decide to have kids they will be like the best looking kids in the world. Latino/Caucasian kids are so cute and smart too because they have the chance to live in two worlds. Take care. |
| 11th August 2009 Rachel Friedensen | congrats!! - From: schtuff happenin´ ... actual update So many congratulations, molly!!!! |
| 11th August 2009 Cassi | - From: schtuff happenin´ ... actual update Molly, it's great to hear you're doing so well (minus the camera thing)! Keep me posted on the juicy details of life as a PCV! |
| 10th August 2009 Wendy Brownell | wow! - From: schtuff happenin´ ... actual update Congratulations Molly!!!! How exciting!!!! |
| 5th August 2009 Mom | I am so sorry! - From: not so much lovin the nica right now WOW, Honey-O-Honey......you've got a lot on your plate this week, huh? I'm so sorry about your camera. AND your too-early trip in the dark. Molly, PLEASE do keep me up on the tests. OK? I mean, like, UP TO THE HOUR. When will you get the results? Also, tell me "again" about what kind of camera you want........you mentioned zoom, # of pixels (or whatever!). I need details. What would be the best way to ship one down to you?? In a box in a bag?? Insured. Love you! |
| 1st August 2009 GERALD | How to cut your flight cost in China - from my experience - From: of red bean recipes, flights to beijing, and dreaming of the future To all my friends who love traveling, if you want to cut down your overall vacation cost in China, I would recommend booking your china flights from http://www.bamboobookings.com |
| 30th July 2009 Jay Cahail | sabor chef - From: of a waterfall and of a thriving garden Glad the onions are doing well for you...where's your garlic and hot peppers?...a meal is not a meal without cebollos, ajos y serranos o habaneros! Saborearse, Jay |
| 30th July 2009 Jay Cahail | Reading...a lost art! - From: BOOKS and AUTHORS and Books read during Peace Corps Service I was always a Steinbeck fan and JeriAnn an Anne Rice fan. Am currently looking for Blood of Brothers (from your list). I firmly believe that all gringos (and most especially those involved in Latin America in any way) should read OPEN VEINS OF LATIN AMERICA by Eduardo Galeano. Hugo Chavez gave Pres. Obama a copy - shame he didn't read it! Se buena! Jay |
| 28th July 2009 arielle | yeay - From: photos i can't wait to visit! smack! |
| 28th July 2009 Mom | Nice... - From: photos Nice photos, Molly. Everyone looks relaxed and happy. Nice family. More later. Lightning is here for the night. xo |
| 27th July 2009 Chris Priska | Getting out of Dodge - From: of another chagas tale & of a confrotation at the border Molly, Have been following this very closely since we returned to Houston last week. I pray for your safety and the safety of your friend. Please keep us posted on what is happening as the news is very sketchy. Which clinic that we held was closest to where LasManos is? Stay safe! Chris Priska Centers of Hope Mission Medical Director |
| 27th July 2009 Mom | More turmoil... - From: of another chagas tale & of a confrotation at the border He didn't give me any specific details that he might have happened to read in the Sunday KC Star newspaper this morning, but your Dad did say that there was more turmoil. What have you heard since your last CNN report? Anything from the PC yet? Love you, Molly! I do so admire your commitment,....but you're only one sentence away from being back in MO,....anytime of the day or night, you know. Sounds like you're right in the direct pathway of trouble, being between Estelli and the Honduran border. |
| 25th July 2009 Mom | Well, the news..... - From: of another chagas tale & of a confrotation at the border Well, so you've heard what CNN has to say, and I, too, would be, like, FRANTIC about Lenin up guarding the border AND about all of you that are up to the North so far. What has the Peace Corps said about these safety issues?? Any word from them yet? You have other volunteers up in those mountains, too, right? It all sounds so very close to you (Estelli!!) and so volatile!! Yes, I agree. And while at the cardiologist, have him point you toward the thyroid man; OK? Love you, Molly. |
| 23rd July 2009 Kristy | - From: of a waterfall and of a thriving garden I love the photos!! yay! looks like your having a good time!! :) |
