After all the hassle in getting to the bus station the VIP bus was a welcome relief from some of the other buses we have taken recently. With more leg room than we knew what to do with, fully reclining chairs, donuts, water and pepsi as snacks as well as hot tea before lights out, along with the computers in the backs of the seats in front and back massagers built into the seats it was absolute heaven!! Mark enjoyed watching a movie in Thai on the computer whilst I played some old SEGA games. We slept well over night until I had a dream we had arrived at Krabi so woke Mark up - except it was 2am and we were only half way there!! Needless to say Mark wasn’t too impressed with me! I ... read more

From Jomtien Beach we were travelling down to Chantaburi for the gems market and to get closer to the border to Cambodia. However, we couldn’t get a bus direct to Chantaburi from Jomtien so we caught a bus from the main road bus stop to Rayong before getting on a connecting bus to Chantaburi. Luckily we knew the guesthouse we were going to stay in so were able to ignore all the tuk tuk driver calls asking us where we going! Chantaburi is a small traditional Thai town with very few tourists passing through. The only restaurants there are have their signs written in Thai and even the night food market was all in Thai and very little English was spoken, so after our 10 circuit around the market and before resorting to the local 7-11 ... read more

We were dropped by Mo Chit sky train by Shirley in order to get the sky train and then Bus to Jomtien Beach. This is next to Pattaya and still a beach but doesn’t have all the hassle and drunk westerners that Pattaya does! So we got on the sky train to Ekkamai and then walked to short distance to the bus station. I got accosted straight away with a ‘ madam where you going?’ As I actually didn’t know which booth I needed I told him and he duely took me to his bus that was leaving for Jomtien beach in 5 minutes. As I had left Mark outside with the bags I went to collect them after buying the tickets and got on the bus. It was a second class bus so no toilet ... read more

A tuk tuk and a sky train took us to our meeting place with Shirley - though because I still wasn’t feeling 100% I couldn’t remember if I’d got my lefts and rights the right way around so spent a little while wandering up and down the road to find her. A stop off for errands and an hour later we got back to Shirley’s house much to the delight of her two dogs Sadie and Daisy!! We spent the night there before going out to Kanchanaburi. We arrived in good time and checked into the guesthouse right on the river Kwai (which Eddy was a little apprehensive about!). After a well needed cup of tea we went out to the Bridge and walked across it. After lunch we took a long tail boat down to ... read more

We made the decision to get a daytime bus the 12 hour journey down to Bangkok so we didn’t have to wait around until evening after checking out of the guest house. However, we departed our guesthouse at 6 am ad the us left the terminal at 7.15 am. It was a more comfortable 1st class bus with better air con and films - although these are in Thai - it makes for some interesting interpretations of the story line!! We soon found out that daytime buses appear to stop everywhere for everyone including picking up and dropping off family and friends!! We eventually arrived in Bangkok at 7 pm (ish) and after a drink at the terminal got a metered taxi to the guest house near Khao San Road. It was a very eery place ... read more

From Chiang Mai we took an overnight bus to Udon Thani to transfer up to the border town of Nong Khai. Now normally the bus journey itself wouldn’t warrant much mention but on this occasion feel it is worth it. We arrived at the bus terminal knowing that we could get a bus at approx 7 pm for the 12 hour journey to Udon Thani. When we arrived at 5pm and went to the window we were told that the last bus out was at 7 pm and the only remaining seats were at the back of the bus and did not recline - we hesitated and checked that it had aircon and that there were no other buses going later that evening - after being told this was the last one we reluctantly paid and ... read more

After leaving Pai a little later in the day than we expected and with Mark feeling under the weather we decided to go and stay n Chiang Mai for a few days rather than going straight out to Chiang Dao. We got dropped of by minibus at Tapae Gate area of Chiang Mai which we were told was the backpackers area and had lots of hostels and guesthouses. We soon found one to rest though not the greatest we’d ever seen it was a roof over our heads. We soon realised that Chiang Mai is not much more than a big city with a really big night market - unless you want to take one of the numerous treks or tours on offer. We did decide to go to the Elephant Park and waterfall at Mae ... read more

It was a long day to get from Bangkok to Pai. We started out at 6.30pm from Shirley’s house who drove us to the bus station in Bangkok - with over 100 departure points it took us a little while to find the right place! We boarded a first class air con bus for the 10-hour journey up to Chiang Mai. We were immediately given some water, juice and 2 cakes each. The music went of and lights went out, with fully reclining seats we managed to sleep for most of the journey though Mark was more comfortable sitting upright he did manage to sleep. Around the 5am mark about an hour outside of Chiang Mai, we were given ice coffee in a carton and something else to eat. Once at Chiang Mai we ignored all ... read more

Well after a long flight from Heathrow to Singapore the short 2 hour flight to Bangkok was quick in comparison. We arrived safely and were picked up by Shirley who is kindly putting us up. Friday night we went to dinner at a Thai restaurant with some of her friends, Eddie and Ying and their niece Ohm, where we ate traditional food and Mark was introduced to a few of the spicier dishes. Saturday we went with Eddie and Ying to their fruit tree farm about two hours outside of Bangkok. They have about 17 acres of land which they are growing fruit trees on including mango trees, papaya trees, dragon fruit, jack fruits and noina (custard apples!) trees which we helped to pick. Mark had a go at cutting out Bamboo shoots that are used ... read more
