From Puerto Natales we went to Puerto Montt. It took about 25 hours to get there, we had to cross the Chile-Argentine boarder twice as the countries are carved up so awkwardly at the end of the continent. Chile got a raw deal, its nearly 5,000km in length but only on average only 180km wide. Its an absurdly shaped country. Puerto Montt (in Manjits words) is the skankiest skank hole in the entire South American continent. Its a real port town, so it takes little to imagine what the town is actually like. Only stayed there for a day (seemed lot [View Full Entry]

the last city in the world
the last city in the world
well the postcards say so!
Forgive me if i can't remeber the dates, i'm sitting in an airconditioned peter pans (internet cafe)in wonderfully hot Cairns, trying to remember Ushuaia, that cold place at the bottom of the world. Firstly to dispell a myth. Ushuaia claims to be the most sourthernly city on the planet. Actually that honour belongs to Puerto Williams in Chile, which is a fraction more southernly than Ushuaia along the Beagle channel. However Puerto Williams Mayor has not been as clever to cash in on tourist dollars to expose Ushuaia as only the 2nd most southernly city in the world, so for now [View Full Entry]

yes u read right. we got lost. we had time to stop in a few places on the way down south, so we decide we would all choose one place on the map and just stop there. i chose pehuen-co which is on the coast. well according to the book it is. we bought the bus ticket there and the destination said pehuajo which we thought might just be another name for it. but no.... that is actually where we went. it was NOWHERE near the coast and when we went into a shop we asked if there was a beach [View Full Entry]

Buenos Aires An incredibly beautiful city, huge like london and also hilarious and unexpected as well. The highlights included meeting the nicest Sikh Family in Buenos Aires (they happenend to be the only one in Buenos Aires but thats another story), the Antiques Fair in San Telmo and the Presidents Pink Palace. The Three Pilgrims The first day we arrived in Buenos Aires we were feeling pious so we decided to visit our respective places of worship (a Gudwara for Manjit and Mandir for Suhirtha and I). I am not sure if this was because we had a huge religious conversion [View Full Entry]

rosario- place of birth of che guevara, lovely little town... had our first offical day off when we just lounged around and watched tv. mainly some crappy celebrity channel i am afraid to say... next day saw some monuments and some lovely buildings... next day tried to go to some museums, which were obviously shut, which we should be getting used to now! but we did find an empty park with swings which our bums could fit on, so that was brilliant as we hadn't been on swings for years!!! oh we also found our first veggie place which was a [View Full Entry]

From the first capital of Brasil to the current: Brasillia. Brasillia, what can I say. It’s a city that was planned and built in the sixties, apparently in the middle of nowhere or in the centre of Brasil whichever you believe. Personally the time it took on the bus to get here, i'm leaning to nowhere. Of course we arrived in Brasillia on a Monday so everything was shut. It was like a city out of the twilight zone, a sixties vision of what the future would look like. The buildings were bizarre, the government zone was arranged in perfect straight [View Full Entry]

Hello, this Jaya writing her first blog entry for Salvador and Brasillia. Salvador is one of the most beautiful cities I have been to, it was the first capital of Brasil and it has a huge African influence which you don't get in the rest of Brasils cities that gives it its rhythm. Its kinda like how you imagine Brasil to be, with beautiful old colonial buildings some restored beautifully others crumbling and dilapidated both existing side by side a good example of Brazilian society in general. We arrived in Salvador just one day after the carnival and the decorations were [View Full Entry]
