I'm studying abroad for the year (09-10) at Leiden University in the Netherlands. I'm hoping to travel around Europe while I'm there, and this is how I'm going to try to keep everyone (who wants to know) up to date with my adventures.

Well, as most of you know this past weekend was the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Prior to my excursion to Berlin I didn't know much about the wall besides the basics-we're talking bare minimum basics. I would describe this trip as short and intense. It was a lot of information to process and experience. My traveling buddy and I went to the Jewish History Museum that was really cool they had a lot to offer in their exhibit and it covered a wide range of Jewish History without focusing excessively on the Holocaust. We also went to a museum on the history of film and TV throughout Germany and it's various manifestations dealing with propagandist tactics with the Nazi's to the severe restricts through the Communist East Berlin government. The film/TV ... read more

So, apparently, I believe it is a European thing, people put butter on sandwiches-regardless of what is on it. Sure, I've heard of a grilled cheese/not even grilled or toasted but just cheese and butter that makes sense. NO, not here no matter what is on the sandwich there is always a base layer of butter. Not that any of you are interested, but today I had a sandwich with, you guessed it, butter, cheese, salami, spinach leaves, and pesto-surprising good! But entirely random. So, while I am on my rant I also wanted to point out that awkwardness is an international problem. I went over to some classmates apartment to watch a film for class. Well you know when you hang out with people for the first time its always awkward because you don't really ... read more

As promised I'm going to post some pictures from Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany. First of all-it was AWESOME! It was so much fun to see all of the German's in their finest lederhosen. They looked fabulous..how anyone can look good in lederhosen, I don't know, but they made it work! There were people from all over the world there in various customs representing their country or just to be silly whatever seemed to fit better. We were lucky to be one of the first groups in line for the Armbrustschützenzelt beer tent. So, when you walk in it's a HUGE tent heavily decorated with the colors of the tent-our colors were green and white. The table are pretty much picnic benches and the "rule" is you have to seat 5 people per side of the bench, ... read more

Hey Everyone, I am sorry that I have become lazy with the blogging, so much has happened its hard to keep track! The first few weeks (now almost 2 months! ah!) have been amazing. We've done some short trips to other cities in Holland-such as the Den Haag, where the seat of the government is, I went to a small town Dordrecht-the oldest city in Holland, and few other random stops on the way to pick up a residence permit in Rijswijk. Holland is beautiful! and very flat! It's such a change from the mountains I am used to back in Asheville. It's a definitely a densely populated city type of country. I am in a "town" technically, and literally 5 minutes from me you can find cows, horses, sheep-farming basically, while on the train to ... read more

Hey Guys, So I finally got here after many ordeals with various planes. All my luggage arrived-thank god! It's beautiful here small enough to walk around and feel safe, but big enough that you don't see the same thing twice. The bikes have their own lanes and stoplights. I don't have any pictures yet, but they are coming! Can't wait to add more of the adventures ...stay tuned... read more

Hi everyone- I just returned from studying abroad in Turkey (1 week) and Greece (2 weeks). It was incredible. I can't even begin to tell you how amazing it was to be in such close proximity to ruins. Being able to walk on them and touch them (in Turkey at least) is an experience I highly recommend to anyone. Personally, I felt that Turkey offered better ruins than Greece, I know thats a lofty statement, but by the time we had reached ruins in Greece we had already seen at least 10 sites in Turkey that were incredible and virtually to ourselves. Greece was simply over crowded and limited in what was available to interact with. Regardless, both places were an adventure and I would go back in a heartbeat to either. The group I went ... read more
