So this was the first week I went to all of my classes. Ok, before you start to judge me as a bad student, let me explain classes here. They’re a joke. My religion class isn’t too bad, the material is interesting because its about different African myths and symbols. I see the Adinkra symbols all over around here so its really cool to learn what they all mean. I have a group project in that class in a few weeks and Im trying really hard to not get frusterated with my group. They just work differently here. Something as simple as deciding on a meeting place turns into a big ordeal and compromise is not an option. For example, one lady in our group has 2 classes on Wednesday and gets out of class at ... read more

Each morning as the tide receded, a young boy walked along the beach plucking starfish from the drying sand. Abandoned by the water, the starfish were sure to die in the growing heat. But the boy would toss each starfish he came upon back into the cool and calming waves. A passerby shook his head at the boy’s slow pursuit and grunted, “Don’t bother, child. Those starfish go on for miles. You’ll never make a difference.” But the boy, cradling another small creature in his hand, tossed it back to the sea and simply replied, “It made a difference to that one.” So I knew it was just a matter of time until this day happened, but it was still a smack in the face when it finally did. Its never easy when you have the ... read more

Friday was Sonja’s birthday and we decided to celebrate in style. We all got dressed up and it was so fun seeing all the girls getting all pretty. It was the first time I’ve worn make up in probably 3 or 4 weeks, I almost forgot how to use it! We went to Osu (a little section of Accra that is more touristy, but has good food and shopping) and ate at Havali Indian Restaurant. I’ve never had Indian food, but this was a nice restaurant even to American standards. It’s run but this tiny Indian woman who was absolutely adorable. Since the restaurant was not run my Ghanaians we got food for about 20 people in no time and had eaten and paid in an hour! Record time in Ghana!! The food was incredible too! ... read more

Ugh, so I wrote a really good blog entry and didnt save it, and lost the internet connection so its all gone. Ill try to rewrite one but it wont be as good as the first one. sorry! so the past 3 days I have spent all day at the school getting worn out by little kids. Its been really rewarding and yesterday I got the best "thank you" that anyone could ever receive. I walked into the compound and in 10 seconds had about 30 kids stampeading towards me. They almost knocked me over and I was greeted with a thousand hugs and hellos. It was incredible! definately a "this is why Im here" moment. Teaching english to the older kids is going pretty well. My class has about 12 people in it so luckily ... read more

This weekend we took our last ISEP organized trip to Kumasi. It is supposed to be about a 4 hour drive but traffic is another issue. I don’t remember how long it took us to get there, but I do remember we didn’t get lunch until 4. All things considered it wasn’t an extremely eventful weekend. Kumasi is the second largest city in Ghana and is the capital for the Ashanti tribe. The Ashantis are known for their arts and crafts so the weekend revolved mostly around shopping and learning how the stuff is made. When we first got there we went to where the current chief lives. His house is like the White House or something. It was completely surrounded by security and there is a very strict no picture policy. We weren’t allowed near ... read more

Yesterday I woke up at 5:15 AM to take a tro tro to Teshie to go to the school. They wanted us to be there at 8 and traffic is really bad so they said for the first day to leave campus by 6 just to make sure. We got there really early so next time I think ill be leaving by 6:30 instead. When we got there we went to a school that was a couple blocks away. Me and Bethany weren’t really sure what we were doing there but we just followed them around. Next thing I know, our “boss” Leevan turns around and informs us that we are giving a 30 minute HIV/AIDS talk to about 70 kids…WHAT?!!! Thanks for the advanced notice dude. All those years of Speech and Debate and improv ... read more

Friday I had a class at 7:30 and the professor didn’t show up and then my next class wasnt until 5:30 so I had some time to check out a few organizations that I want to volunteer at. The first place I went was Global Civic Preservation (some name huh?) in Teshie near the beach. It’s a school for children who for some reason or another aren’t in school here in Ghana, maybe their parents cant afford school or they’re orphans or something of that sort. It was a fairly small place, but the kids were awesome and the two guys who are in charge, Michael and Joshua, are really great. They are very organized and seem to really know how to run the place. It was really cool because they showed us around the school ... read more

So as Ive mentioned in the past, we are in the middle of the dry season here in Ghana. I found that really hard to believe when I got off the plane and almost suffocated from the humidity, however it is definitely in full swing now. Even the Ghanaians are saying this is one of the worst dry seasons they’ve had in a long time. It’s the Dust Bowl of 2009. The orange dirt covers EVERYTHING! You know how snow turns trees white in the winter? Well here all the plants along the highway are orange from the dust from the cars. Today I just had enough and couldn’t handle it any longer. I sent my sheets to the laundry in the other ISH hostel because I could feel the dirt as I slept. Then I ... read more

This weekend was fairly uneventful. Saturday I went to the beach with Bethany. We had a little mix up with the tro-tros on the way there and on the way back so what should have been a 20 minute trip to the beach quickly turned into an hour and a half trip there and two hour trip on the way back… Lesson learned, its worth the extra couple cedis just to take a taxi. Sunday we went to Osu to do a little shopping. Unfortunately everything is closed on Sundays so there wasn’t much there to keep our attention, but we wandered around for a little bit. The taxi driver that took us to Osu was really great and didn’t try to rip us off and helped us out a lot. I learned that if ... read more

So last night this Obruni tried to dance... not only dance, but tried to dance traditional African dances... let me tell you a little story So I want to take a dance class and was really excited to see that the practical was on Thursday nights right after my Twi class. I showed up last night wearing a green t-shirt and khaki shorts. It was easy to find the room, it was the one with the African drums playing that you could hear from a block away. I walked into the room to discover that I was the only Obruni (white person or foreigner) in the class. I also quickly discovered that there is a dress code of some sort in this class because everyone is wearing black stretch pants and a white shirt. Mistake number ... read more
