... despite badly bruised ribs (maybe cracked??), an amputated toe(nail - surgery today for about $35:), massive diesel fume ingestion, and mosquito swarms. oh yeah, i forgot to mention sun burn. i've been peeling for the past week or so. i heard it's been snowing in the pac nw. woulda been a nice change from sitting on the beachs in Caramoan. a few pics below, do a google image search for full gloating effect. told you guys entries wouldn't be as frequent. traveling with family doesn't leave much down time. have been on the go a bunch. past week was in the provinces where they are still cyberspaceless. a night at each of the aunties/uncles houses there, plus a night at my oldest cousin's house. my toe got caught in the floor boards the second night. ... read more

A few weeks in now, and I finally made it to a pc with time to get an entry in. It's pretty much been gogogogogogogogo since we landed. The tour we flew in with set the pace with a full steam ahead itinerary. Landed in Manila around 1130 pm, customs, baggage and the bus ride meant not getting to Manila Hotel until just before 1am. Registration and check-in, didn't put my head on my pillow until around 2am. Breakfast started at 6am, bus for the first destination leaves at 8am. No allowance for jet lag or a chance to get my bearings. The destinations for the tour were pretty good, a lot of history, and our guide tita Lynn (tita = auntie) was real informative. On the way back to the hotel one day. she bought ... read more

Venice had it

Venice was so beautiful it created a time delay for this journal - so here's a summary of my stay there. I could feel it from the train ride in from the main land, going over the connection looking out over the water I could sense I was going to like Venice. Arrived at the train station walked out and just stood in awe. It was basically like all the pictures I'd ever seen were in motion before my eyes. Luckily my hostel was right across the grand canal, so I checked in dropped off my bags (and the kiddies...) and set to walking. There's really only one main street in Venice, so you can follow it all the way down to St Mark's Square, just follow the signs, cross the bridges, and end up at ... read more

Last full day in Florence and I think the lack of germ-killing alcohol let the cold creep back. The worst night of sleep I've had since I got here, a bad headache, and a non-stop nasal exodus. A "wasted day", another free walking tour, some good gelato, and a pretty good calzone (prosciutto, funghi, uovo). Gonna stay in tonight, and get some laudry done. Should be the last time I have to pay for laundry this trip (thankfully! 20 francs in Zurich!!! = just under $20usd). I've learned the secret of adding an egg to the center of your pizza and will subsequently be experimenting once i get back. I already have an idea for a "carbonara" pizza using a cream sauce (probably just alfredo), bacon, chicken, and just adding the egg to the center. Just ... read more

Was convinced to go on the pub crawl last night by the roomies and the Aussies from the hostel across the street. 20eur for an hour of all you can drink wine, beer or spirits, plus a free shot at the 3 bars we went to was fairly convincing in itself - especially when a pint of beer runs 5eur alone (7eur for a bottle of house red was the much more economical option, so being the penny pincher I am, stuck with that most of my nights). Rum and cokes, gin and tonics for an hour set the night off right. Unfortunately, me and one of the other guys in the hostel were planning on a 9am train to Florence (Firenze). I woke up around 630 (because 3.5hrs of sleep is way too much, right?), ... read more

It's my last full day in Rome, and contemplating the pub crawl tonight. I don't have to catch an early train, but one of the guys from the hostel is heading to Florence as well and is planning on leaving around 9am. It's not too early, but early enough where I'd be struggling to get out of bed. Still got a little while to decide. I didn't get in everything I wanted to see, but I did get all the big stuff. Sistine Chapel, the Vatican, and St Peter's today made for a full day. Saw the Pope from a distance (didn't find out you had to get a free ticket the day before until late last night). The day was amazing. Some of the facts about the sculptures, paintings, frescoes, etc are ridiculous. Did you ... read more

This is the first city where I spent money for a tour, two actually. I paid for the tour at il colosseo and Palentino. The tour for il colosseo was crap, a very long winded tour guided who kept closing his eyes while he spit out adjective after adjective after adjective after adjective to describe one single aspect. After the second stop, I eventually just started wandering off taking pictures and looking at stuff on my own. I kept the group in sight since I would have to catch up to them later to meet for the tour for Palentine hill. If you get the guide who looks like Bob Euker, ask for the next guide. Fortunately, the next part was led by a different guide - a much better speaker, and a lot more informative. ... read more

I think the cold winds in Barcelona stuck me with something. Woke up with the sniffles and a slight scratch in my throat. Walk it off. Walk, walk, walk it off. Rub some dirt on it. Took the early bus out of Barcelona to Girona with one of the girls from the room, so I could have some time to explore the small town before flying out. She had an early flight, so we just grabbed a quick breakfast at the airport. Didn't take too long to see the old town - cathedral, Arab baths, old wall, la ramblas (nothing compared to the Barcelona ramblas) - but worth the few hrs. Just a short walk from the train station to the old town. I've never done so much walking in my life - maybe all 30yrs ... read more

This city definitely needs more time, but Italy is calling rather loudly. So loudly in fact that I´m skipping Stockholm even though I´ve already paid for airfare there and back. For some reason, accomodations are very difficult to find in Stockholm, and I will actually be paying about 1/3 of the cost to for 3 nights in Florence. A couple days back I went on the free walking tour. We only had about 7 people, so it was almost like a private tour and very intimate. Tour guide was from Modesto, just traveling around picking up odd jobs here and there. Cool guy that showed us where to get cheap (but good paella, 3 euros), 1 eur beers, bag of churros for 1 eur. Good stuff. Met a couple of Australians, a couple of S. Africans, ... read more

I thought I had missed my chance at getting some pics of the Alps, but about 15min after taking off from Zurich I saw them in the distance. Still too far to photograph, but a pretty good view. Then all, of a sudden, clouds!!! Damned clouds again! Turbulence forced the pilot to climb above the clouds so the Alps disappeared. It´s like the half hendl in Germany*. Luckily, a short while later the clouds cleared and I got some good shots. I have a lot more shots, but I´ll probably need to tweak them a little in Photoshop once I get back. Arrived in Barcelona around 830 last night, and it was a huge change in climate from Zurich. The a/c on the train in from the airport was off and or broken so it wasn´t ... read more
