The time finally came for Craig to arrive in Shanghai and we spent the week together doing all of the touristy things, eating out and drinking. It was sad saying goodbye to the friends I have made there but I was excited about going off to somewhere new. We made our flight on time (it was a bit touch and go - a long story) and arrived at Manila airport in the Philippines just before the sun was rising. To get to Boracay we had to take an hour long connecting flight in a small propeller plane (like Indiana Jones) to a neighbouring island. Despite being completely knackered after traveling through the night, we both stayed awake to take in the great views out the window, as the plane kept below the clouds. Our first impression ... read more

A Tourist-Tastic Weekend

This weekend I went on my first long distance trip within China to the ancient city of Xi'an. I took a two hour flight out on the Friday evening and arrived at my hostel around midnight. Resisting the lively bar, I popped off to bed pretty much straight away so that I could get up early to join one of the tours of the local sites, arranged by the hostel. This turned out to be a pointless plan, as staying in the dorm room next to me were a group of Chinese who were either deaf and unaware of their own volume, or completely ignorant to anyone else actually existing around them. Argh. The next morning there were about 10 of us in total on the tour, all squeezed into a mini van to head to ... read more

Urgh, I have so much to catch up on and I really cannot be bothered writting about it all. It has been two weeks since I last wrote a blog so I am going to start at the weekend before last. This was the weekend when I first discovered the fabulous fabric market, having since clocked up my third visit (which, considering it shuts at the same time I finish work, is pretty impressive). The fabric market is a bit out the way not being within reasonable walking distance to any of the metro lines, but is definitely well worth the 2 quid taxi ride to get there. It consists of three floors of stall-like shops, housing every type of material you can think of. You can browse through examples of coats, suits, trousers, dresses and ... read more

This weekend I went on a trip to Hangzhou, which is about 1 or 2 hours south of Shanghai by train, depending on which train you get. What was originally meant to be a group of four turned into a group of 11 teenagers all coming along too. On arrival we split into groups of four to taxi it to the hostel (invitingly call 'Mingtown') that we had booked. Naturally, we couldn't find it and ended up arriving an hour later. By the time everyone was organized it was already half way through the afternoon. Now came the next major hurdle - trying to find somewhere to eat. I have noticed something that teenagers do which is definitely an age thing - they pack together and get very anxious at the idea of not being part ... read more

Last week I had my first taste of dog meat. It had the texture of tender beef but tasted a little but like chicken... I'm guessing it was labrador or golden retriever judging by the thick blonde hair that I found in my food. No, I tell a lie. I am still to savor the Chinese delicacy that is dog meat. However, I did have my first encounter with the stuff on a menu while I was out for lunch on my break from work. Flipping through the various rice and noodle dishes there is was - ‘stir-fried dog’ and ‘stewed dog hot-pot’. Mmmm. Ordering a seafood rice dish, I was still paranoid that a trace of dog may have made it into my food. There were definitely little bits of what looked like some kind ... read more

At the beginning of the week, after the weekend during which Alex and Anna arrived, I started my internship. The media/publishing company I am working for is called Sinomedia, whose main publications are China Economic Review - ' a premier English language business magazine', Eurobiz - 'the official journal of the European Chamber of Commerce in China' and Spa Magazine (I’m sure you can figure that one out yourselves). If you have nothing better to do (get a hobby), they all have websites you can Google. I arrived at the office on a raining Monday morning feeling surprisingly calm and really did not have any nerves. Being thrown in at the deep end in a completely different culture, where you don't speak the language, certainly forces you to get face a lot of fears and challenge ... read more

This weekend another girl called Anna, who is going to be teaching through the same company that has organized my stay in Shanghai, arrived at the flat of doom . I failed to mention that on the Friday night I had met up and gone to see some bands with Alex, another guy doing the same as Anna. I think it's important to explain who they are now because I will probably be mentioning them quite a lot. Anyway, on the Sunday afternoon we got together with most of my 'old' friends and went for lunch to a place called Whisk, which had THE BEST Italian food. We also indulged in 'iced chocolate' which was basically a drink consisting of thick, gloopy melted chocolate with a tiny amount of milk and lots of ice. Amazing. After ... read more

During last week I found myself with a lot of time to spare, having not yet started work and only doing a two hour mandarin course on most afternoons. I decided to join the masses and get myself a bike. This may sound a bit extravagant but in China you can pick one up for next to nothing. After a trip to the Carrefour next to my apartment, I set off to find Jing'an temple on my newly purchased ten-quid bike called "Classic". A very large chunk of the population cycles in China and most roads have cycle lanes down the side to accommodate them. The social pecking order goes cars, motor bikes, bikes then people and so the traffic flows along to this. Being somewhat aware of what is coming up behind you always helps ... read more

I've been a busy bee over the last week! Firstly, I decided to move out of the filthy, falling apart apartment. After emailing numerous adverts online and visiting one apartment, I found the best place into which I could move straight away. So I moved in the next morning and emailed the company who organized my placement here and told them that I wasn't going to wait for them to clean the place because I had already moved out, mwah ha ha! It's such a nice room on the sixth floor with a massive balcony, wooden and marble floors and all the mod cons . The complex is fronted by a massive fountain and there is this huge archway with chandeliers at the entrance The grounds are full of trees and really ornate Chinese gardens. ... read more

Greetings! So I am now living in an apartment right in the middle of one of the busiest streets for 'night life'. On first impressions I almost died (no really) upon setting foot into my new accommodation, mainly as it had not been cleaned at all so was covered in clutter belonging to the previous guest (including one tube of Vagisil, nice). I am glad to say I have now got over this and am trying to see 'the funny side'. My first day was spent shopping for a few essentials. Armed with my Mandarin phrase book I headed to what could be described as a super giant Dixons, to get myself a Chinese phone charger. I was so proud of myself on leaving the shop charger in hand. Of course when I got back to ... read more
