Edited to add: The video of us doing the luge run On to the next day in Queenstown. Not really a great deal was planned for today as we have an early start the next day to get over to Milford Sound and then back to Te Anau. The one activity we did have on the planner though was the gondolas up to the top of the peak overlooking Queenstown and then the rather thrilling luge rides back down. We met up with Danny again, our new found travel buddy. This guy by the way is hillarious, we nearly had to be separated on the bus the other day as we were making each other laugh so much. So it's safe to say we get on really well. We headed to get on the gondolas, and ... read more

Well, Queenstown is pretty mad. Everything is quite full on, from the people to the activities, even to the legendary fergburgers. Our first full day in Queenstown and I didn't really have my camera on me as today was activity day, so sorry but no photos for you today. I was up by about 7am and met Danny (fellow traveller on the Magic Bus) and we checked in for our "surfing" experience of the Kawarau river. The day promised to be full of white water comprising of grade 3 and 4 rapids. The half day activity was run by a company called Frogz. These guys are really great fun and I would highly recommend it if you are ever in Queenstown. We were driven to the launch site by a crazy Australian called Dan. he had ... read more

Well that was only slightly annoying, typed this blog entry all out and then lost it. So let's start again ! The magic bus collected us in Franz Josef (which will always be known to me as the place I could never do a sky dive in). We would make our way further down south of the south Island, on to Lake Wanaka and then on to Queenstown. The weather was pretty bad when we left, but this allowed us to see newly created waterfalls within the national park we were going through. That was pretty amazing seeing that in action. As we got closer to Lake Wanaka, the weather changed and so did the scenery. The sun started shining and when we arrived in Wanaka it was a glorious summer day. We picked up a ... read more

I thought I would update the blog to let you know what I have done today so far. It really deserves it's own entry as it was pretty amazing. We were wondering if we would even get a chance to go as the morning sky dive was off, we thought it might be the case with the heli hike as well, but nope, we got on the flight up to the glacier at 12pm. It is a pretty awesome flight on the helicopter around and back down the glacier and then landing on the ice where two Franz Josef guides waited for us. The whole operation is very smooth and very well run. Our guide was Julia, she had been working as a guide for 4 years up ont he glacier. In the times between when ... read more

Well Greymouth was pretty uneventful. The wind and the rain in the night were borederline torrential, and I woke up with a bit of a cold. Ran over to Countdown (supermarket) to get some lemsip and some vitamins, hopefully they will sort me out. Magic bus driver today is a guy called Vale. He explained how his house in Christchruch has been flattened and at the moment he is homeless and is just driving as much as he can. This guy was about as happy as a person could be and he was beaming all the time. I tried to understand how someone can be like this when they have no house to go back to. He explained to me later on that they only thing that is important to him is his friends and family ... read more

Morning ! So I thought it was about time to tell you who I am travelling with. I should really have done that at the start to be honest haha. Toby is my mate's Nick's brother and he has done some travelling before in Thailand. I have known Toby for a good few years and he is a bit younger than me but is fearless when it comes to talking about bungee jumps. We'll get to that in a later post, we're supposed to be doing that on Friday 4th march, we'll see. I am bricking it. Today we went from nelson to Greymouth. The scenery was pretty amazing and this seems to be coming to be the norm for travelling in the South Island. We got on the Magic Bus and our first stop was ... read more

Well pretty amazing day today, just got back from a mammoth 12 hour trip. We got up at 6am to have some breakfast and to wait for the bus which would take us over to Kaiteriteri, at the outskirts of the Abel Tasman National Park (ATNP). It was quite a long ish drive, but the views were amazing as we wound our way round some very steep parts of the road. As always the driver was very informative and he told us how Nelson and the area around ATNP was very famous for goriwng and exporting apples and that they are expecting to export over 5 million tonnes this season. Yeah, this is one or two pips ! Once we arrived at the park, we were greeted by crew who work for Wilsons boats. They checked ... read more

Well apart from the wedding day, this is one of the best days I have had so far. All of them have been good in a different way, but today was very special. I have been thinking about this day for a while - the trip to the South Island. People have been telling me how amazing the views are in the South Island and to say I was not dissappointed would be one of the biggest understatements of the world. First up we boarded the 8.25 inter islander ferry to Picton from Wellington port. This ferry was a bit of a beast. It was massive. 10 decks, although only a couple were open. We had some breakfast and then went upstairs to check the view of us leaving Wellington. I then pretty much stayed up ... read more

After getting quite drunk the night before we had a bit of a lie in on our final full day in Wellington. Then at 1.30pm we headed out on the Lord of the Rings half day tour. I actually didn't really realise how much of the Lord of the Rings trilogy was filmed in New Zealand, but it seems pretty much all of it did. We went up Mount Victoria, with our guide Rendall and visited spots where Frodo and the rest of the hobbits were in the first movie. Rendall, for me, was the highlight of the tour. He was hillarious, coming up with various stories of how the men on horseback (think they were called Raiths) could come flying down the hill side with only a moment's notice and that they can sometimes be ... read more

After the change to the flights we said our goodbyes to Laura and Macky at the airport, wishing them all the best when they get to Christchurch. I know things will be hard for them, so I hope they get sorted as soon as they possibly can. It has been great to see them and hopefully we can catch up again when we get round to Christchurch around the 16th March. Flying into Wellington, the houses are brightly coloured and there a sense of an old town combined with the new. We arrived and got transported to the YHA which is in an ideal spot just minutes away from all the bars and restaurants. After dropping our stuff off, we walked over to go and get something to eat and then back down to the city ... read more
