I guess I'm a travel junkie. I find new places and people stimulating. I grow bored easily in the same environment and crave new experiences. I also find that travel is an excellent way of losing weight.

17th of August. My plane approached the picturesque airport at Chiang Mai and made a perfect landing, ahead of schedule. Could this mean my travel travails were over? Not quite. I had to queue in one of three lines to get through immigration. Seeing I’d sat at the rear of the plane I was one of the last to line up in the terminal. Sometimes airlines open the rear doors as well as the front exit from the plane. Ryan Air does, Air Asia doesn’t so I was one of the last to disembark the aircraft. My queue was moving at a snail’s pace compared to the others. Typical!!! So close to Chiang Mia but so far. Another immigration officer came on duty and a group of passengers broke off and lined up at the next ... read more

I anticipated a very taxing few days ahead of me on the road. The light rail connection to Porto airport was good as was the airport itself. The flight to Pisa was also trouble free. Can’t stand that horribly cheesy Ryan air ‘music’ blaring through the speakers before take off accompanied by the cheap spruking but what can you do? Nerdy guy sitting next to me kept extending his elbow while he was reading a tabloid sports paper. Apart from that it was a faultless flight. Located the railway platform in Pisa which was at one end of the small terminal. The ticket was only six Euro although the marked price was five-sixty. Was the ticket seller scooping a bit off the top for herself? Well it is Italy. Double checked that I was on the ... read more

My journey to Porto didn’t exactly get off to a smooth start. I knew I had to catch a train to Coimbra B railway station but wasn’t sure which train to catch. I couldn’t see the train status screen. The bane of the blindy on the road. There were two trains waiting to leave so I had to make a choice. Naturally I made the wrong choice on the advice of a guy waiting on the platform. Got on the train which was totally empty. I waited a minute or two and still no other passengers. I saw people walking toward a train on a far platform. Got off the train and flashed my ticket in front of a railway official. He directed me to the other train on the far platform. This train was almost ... read more

16th July. Bye bye Lisbon, hello Coimbra. As I did my final packing just after 09:00 I was conflicted in my feelings. On the one hand I was relieved to be leaving Lisbon where I’d had an extended forced stay due to illness. On the other there was some trepidation at facing the unknown. Will the bus station at Coimbra be near where the pensions are located and secondly will there be reasonably priced accommodation on offer? I can tell you I wasn’t looking forward to lugging my large back pack through unknown streets in the midday sun. Settling into a new place sucks. It’s the hard yards of travel in my opinion. I could only hope it went by quickly with a minimum of hassles. I got to the Jarmin Zoologico Metro station without much ... read more

We got into Lisbon just after day break and pulled up at a giant transport interchange building. I followed a fellow passenger in the direction of the main building. He seemed to have the same idea as me and went straight for the toilets. Unfortunately they were closed. Wouldn’t want the general public using them now would we. Had to search the entire expanse of the great featureless building. A guy in uniform directed me back where I came from and I found the WCs. Trouble was that only one cubicle had toilet paper and was being used. After a minute or two I got my chance to go. I walked out toward the front of the building not having a clue where to go. There were a lot of homeless guys sleeping on benches but ... read more

Caught a taxi to the swish, new bus station in outer Agadir. It’s a big place, bigger than I imagined. Taxi driver was a nice guy trying to learn English and already had a good basic grasp. Tipped him as he did the right thing by me and used the meter. They’re not all scum bags over here. Some are just trying to scrape a meager living. There was a huge ticket hall at the new bus station and none of the seediness that the other one reeked of. There were a number of cats hanging around as they do in nearly all public places over here. There was huge number of empty bus bays outside. I wondered if they would ever get to use them all. Worked which was my bus. Always a hassle I ... read more

We hit the sack on the train to Marrakech at about 22:30. My sleeping companion decided that he’d use his blanket as the bed sheeting and the sheeting as his blanket. Each to their own. I took a sleeping pill at about 23:00 and slept like a baby for four or five hours. Woke up early and cat napped until the sun rose. Got up around 07:00 and watched the scenery whiz past. We were supposed to get in at 07:00 by my reckoning but arrived around quarter to nine. I followed the crowd out of the train hoping is was at the right place. It wasn’t how I imagined it. More like a suburban station with a few more platforms. Passed by the touts who were no worse than those at the ferry terminal. Looked ... read more

I didn’t sleep all that well the night before my trek to Morocco. Was worried that I wouldn’t wake up in time to catch the bus. Got to the San Sebastian bus station with plenty of time to spare. The woman selling tickets spoke perfectly good English and was there to serve customers. No future for her me thinks. She said I needed to remember twenty but when it came down to it that number had no real significance to me. The bus took slightly over three and a half hours to wend its way down towards the ferry terminal. The driver took a lunch break of twenty or so minutes which didn’t help. Once I got to the terminal it was a matter of deciding which company had the best deal. There really wasn’t that ... read more

The flight to Seville went very smoothly for the most part. We even had sleeves on the back of the airline seats. Must be a perk of flying to Spain. There was a woman nearby nursing a problem child. The infant spat the metaphorical dummy at regular intervals. Not pleasant to the ears but I have heard worse. The pilot may have been a frustrated stand up but he still knew how to land a plane. As we skimmed over a patchwork of pastures resembling a giant cubist painting the wheels touched down on the tarmac. It was a perfect landing and when we pulled to a stop the rear door opened meaning I was one of the first passengers out of the plane. More perfection followed by being greeted by mid 20’s sunny weather. Seville ... read more

The voyage across the channel was uneventful. I chatted with John, a sixty something retired fisherman who lives near London. As we drew closer to the white cliffs of Dover the weather turned nasty. John thought that was typical. We got off the boat and headed for the information desk. Jack had pre booked two National Express bus tickets online to London for one pound and five pounds respectively. Unfortunately the ferry trip took so long that he missed out on both of these discounted trips. He headed off with the others to pay twelve pound full fare. I headed off with John who said he would give me a lift to London in his car. Trouble is his car was parked in Ramsgate and we had to get a local bus to there. The local ... read more
