| 16th May 2009 Bob Carlsen | Welcome to Korat - From: I see that your school is in Nakhon Ratchasima, which is the long way of saying Korat (where the grey Korat cat comes from). You should love it there, although I'm sure it has changed a lot since I lived there from 1958 to 1966. In the early '60's the major U.S. military presence started, as Korat Air Base was a major launching point for bombing North Vietnam. Because of that early influence, many Thais learned to speak English, so you shouldn't have any language problems. There are probably a lot of former GI's who have retired there, although I'm sure that you will want to submerse yourself into the Thai culture. As for things to do on weekends, go to Phimai, the Khmer ruins an hour north of Korat. When it gets too hot, go to Khao Yai National Park an hour west of Korat, a mountain resort area with jungles and animals. Have fun! |
