Dawn and Lee - Born to Travel, Designed to Adventure

Dawn and Lee Croucher are keen to find a world beyond the shops, reality TV and two weeks in the Sun. Having travelled extensively through India, South East Asia, Morocco and in 2010 got married in a Tree House in the South African bush. We will now start to document our travels, not particularly for the benefit of others, but for if/when we are unable to travel and explore we can at least sit back and look at places that may not longer exist or view pictures of animals that have long since been obliterated by the progress of man. Most of all we want to remember what we did and say ‘What an adventure we had’

5.30am - a noise, music, an alarm clock, a mosquito net above us, jungle sounds outside, where are we? Day 1 at Kingfisher Ecolodge and we are off bird watching at 6am, the suns just coming up but it's already very hot - we have 3 local guides the tallest around 5 feet. Heading out through Khiet Gong village the locals are all up sitting around smoking fires to keep the insects away, sitting under their stilted homes surrounded by Pigs, Chickens, Ducks etc. Just another day of very basic living in Laos. We head out across empty rice paddies, waiting for the second planting of the season. The forested hillside is full of big Rainforest trees, no chainsaws have yet ventured this way. The 3 hour session across first paddies, forest and finally wetland was ... read more

Another day dawned and we were refeshed from yesterdays travels, no extra mozzie bites overnight and no side effects from the consumed chilli flakes. A couple of jobs to do before heading south, Cash and a long sleeved shirt for Rick from the Market. The ATM's here do work but only allow 1 Million Kip per tarnsaction - sounds a lot but it's around 12,000 to the pound, unfortunately the family in front of us had decided to buy a car (for cash) today and were using both ATM's and several different Credit and Debit cards. After 20 minutes we left with 2 Million Kip on the hip! We visited a nearby monastry for 20 minutes or so and Lee and Rick had a chat with three novice monks. To the market, Shirt for Rick - ... read more

So you left us on the night train to Ubon Ratchathani in North East Thailand. We arrived at around 9.30am but at around 7 we have had made our way to the dining car and had a thai take on an american breakfast. On arrival in Ubon we made our way to Warin Market to catch the bus to Chong Mek in order to cross into Laos, this wasn't quite that simple as the bus only took us half the way the we had to change into a pickup truck. But, We made it out of Thailand and into Laos and had a steaming bowl of beef (Water Buffalo) Noodle soup then into another pickup to get to Pakse - the driver refused to leave until he had at least 7 passengers for the trip to ... read more

Boxing Day started off with an early breakfast following by Thai massage for us two, while Rick went in search of fresh squid (fish bait). I went for aromatherapy massage which was heaven, Lee was advised he needed something more hardcore, with his back problems, so ended up with some kind of torture involving steaming hot compresses, ouch! All very theraputic - we will see. Next picked up mopeds and dropped me off to beach while boys fished. Beach to myself for quite a while, woman tried to sell me a massage, dont I look like ive just had one?! Alas it was soon time to get some lunch then ferry back to mainland. Seas still choppy! Said our goodbyes to Tom and his family who are all so lovely. Patted Hairy Macleary one more time ... read more

Found a nice local place to eat, nice and simple, only thing on the menu Korean BBQ ! Merry Christmas - bright sunny, hot and not a sign of tinsel or frost! Christmas morning spent by the sea. Lee and Rick caught several small fish - neither are quite sure what they caught but they had large teeth. Rick managed to catch many rocks again today! Dawn had a nature stroll with 2 local dogs (one with a broken leg in plaster and halo (see picture) and managed to flush out a few reptiles) later in the day we had a very close encounter with a very large green snake (too close for comfort - and not sure quite what it was) Sea beautiful, but very choppy bit worried about crossing over to mainland tomorrow if ... read more

After a long flight with Eva Air surrounded by what Rick referred to as "seedy old gits" we arrived in Bangkok. A humid 33 degrees greeted us but we were quickly in a cab heading South for Sri Racha. As usual our cab driver, who says "yes, yes i know where that is, its my family home!", hasnt a bloody clue where he is going and spends most of the journey stopping to ask the locals -who send him all places! Good to see the countryside though Eventually we found Sri Racha Lodge after a quick turnaround headed for a seafood restaurant on the coast. The tanks outside contained fish large enough to feed a family of 8 for several weeks! We chose carefully from the menu but everything came out loaded with chillis, extremely hot, only ... read more
