Journey into Isaan - Northeast Thailand Monday 21st - Thursday 23rd December I started out early on my first trip to central Isaan, the Northeast of Thailand. I was heading for Khon Kaen which is a large city 449 km from Bangkok and 190km from Korat, I had a shock when I was in the village visiting the Thai family when the rear bonnet of my hire car had fallen on my head leaving a large bump which still hurt a fair bit the day after. Besides having a bad cold, allergic reactions and some other ailments I was not in the best shape but determined to forge ahead and enjoy my tour of central Isaan. Fist stop in Khon Kaen was the Kaen Nakorn Lake and then to the nearby and very impressive nine story ... read more

Pattaya to Korat - back to the real Thailand There is always entertainment of some form available and fortunately for me there was a huge Isaan Concert near Pattaya Beach Road which I attended on Friday 18th December. There was a big crowd in attendance, all sorts of food available and two stages providing great Isaan style music which should get anyone up and dancing although most of the audience were fairly reserved tonight. I was going to have an early night but wanted to find out where the local Ta Wang Daeng Club was located in Pattaya. This is a chain of Thai Isaan/folk music clubs located in the major cities which I have attended many times in Korat. Well I found the place on Pattaya Third Road near the fishing lake/restaurant and the staff ... read more

Christmas is close, Bangkok looks a bit sad December 12 I arrived yesterday after another good Singapore Airlines flight and arrived at my Silom hotel at 830pm. The staff at my hotel are always welcoming, it really feels like I am at home. As usual my friends at the pub were also happy to see me and I spent most of the night in the karoake bar, fairly tired from my flight and I sang only one song, a duet with a friend, my favourite Thai song "Yahk Roo Tae Mai Yahk Taam", a very beautiful melody. I have made some new friends on my last two visits to Thailand, Australian expats who are living in Bangkok with their partners and it is really good to have some farang contacts here. I slept well even though ... read more

CHANTHABURI - as my guide kept saying “Beautiful too much” Chanthaburi near the south eastern coast of Thailand is a very beautiful place to visit with many nice beaches, historical landmarks and waterfalls. I was fortunate to have a Thai friend and guide show me around for a few days. This is not an area regularly visited by foreign tourists and I saw only a few other farangs. There is not much English spoken although the roads were fairly well sign posted in English. Some of the hotels can organise tours but I have not seen much advertised on the internet and I would have been struggling to get around and see what I did without my fabulous guide. We hired a car from Budget in Pattaya for the drive to Chanthaburi with stops at the ... read more

Holy Days and Street Parades From squat toilets to western comfort Well I have reverted to my western comforts and spent a few days staying at the Korat Resort about 10km from the village near Chock Chai. The father of the family I stay with and usually sleep in their house was a bit unsure as to my reasoning for this but I explained that the dogs bark and wake me up in the middle of the night. He laughed and seemed to accept my excuse, lets face it, I need a good night's sleep and it doesn't happen in the village. It is also nice to have an air conditioned room and warm shower away from the heat and mozzies that hover in the village. I think it does everyone good to have a short ... read more

Oh to be beside the seaside !!! Pattaya and Jomtiem I was not impressed about my first trip to Pattaya in 2008 and it can be very sleazy near the beach and beer bar areas. Everyone seems to be trying to sell something or themselves down by the seaside area, "you need a suit sir?" or "massage sir?", or just use your imagination on what is being offered. Since returning I have found that with some effort this can also be a fairly relaxing place with great shopping and food malls all in close proximity. If you escape from the tourist area and catch a baht bus to nearby Jomtiem to you will find some nice beaches and fresh air, quite pleasant after the pollution of Bangkok. There are also some very good attractions like the ... read more

My Sunday in a Thai village Saturday night in Bangkok There are not many other places that I would rather be, everyone was excited to take me to the disco near Ratchada. I love the Thai discos, I may be the only foriegner there with my Thai friends but it was not going to happen tonight. I returned to my room at 9.30pm with a promise to return later but my eyed were red, maybe a victim of the Bangkok pollution and my whole body seem to have an allergic reaction, possibly some msg in my pineapple rice at the pub tonight. In any case I lay on my bed, sent a text message to my friends and that was it for my wild night in Bangkok To Korat and Chock Chai Sunday turned out to ... read more

Songkran - 3 days of fun and chaos in Thailand Amidst the political turmoil of Thailand, none of which is mentioned in the rural areas except for a glimpse of the news on TV, I boarded a truck full of kids and adults from the village near Chock Chai about three hours by bus north-east of Bangkok. It is Songkran water festival time and "Happy New Year" for the Thais. I stood in the middle of the crowded truck next to a large barrel of water and everyone was armed with water shooting guns and anything suitable for throwing water. Soon we were passing large groups of locals dancing in the hot midday sun to the sounds of the upbeat Isaan music, all smiling and water was spraying everywhere. It did bring a momentary tear to ... read more

Please close the Airport !!! Everyone says you must be happy to be home - er, not really. After six trips to Thailand I am not sure anymore. I was hoping the airport in Bangkok would be closed again and I would be kept from returning to Australia a little bit longer. No such luck as the Thais seem happy with their new Prime Minister - for now anyway. Yes I am a proud Australian and my home is Adelaide but it is difficult to leave the many friends I have made in Thailand. I have been back in Australia for a week and have slowly settled back into work. After returning to Bangkok from Pattaya I was feeling fairly ordinary with a cold so I stayed in Bangkok and spent time with my friends there ... read more
