Yesterday morning we took the Kuala Lumpur tube to the Petronas Towers in the business district and booked tickets to go up to the viewing towers halfway up later in the day. Tickets are free but run out quickly so we had to get there early to ensure we could go! After getting the tickets we went to have some Nasi Lemak for breakfast. Nasi Lemak is a very popular breakfast in Malaysia. The dish is coconut steamed rice wrapped in banana leaf and served with fried anchovies and peanuts, cucumber slices, chicken and a spicy tomato curry sauce and it [View Full Entry]

Well, Saturday was a day of planning. We woke up and decided that we were definitely going to Malaysia instead of the Philippines and went to book coach tickets. They were only 30 Singapore Dollars and would take us all the way into Kuala Lumpur, the capital. In the evening we went to Darren's place for a few beers and to meet his flatmate Ian. His place is lovely, in a big condo development and a world away from our little hostel! We had a great night, sitting in the jacuzzi and playing xbox after watching the Boro vs Man City [View Full Entry]

Bar just around the corner from our hostel

This morning at about 11am we walked from our hostel down to the Colonial District to take a look at Merdeka Square which is where the first Malaysian flag was raised after gaining independence from Britain 1957. The 95M flagpole is also one of the tallest in the world. From here we walked up to Little India (it seems most cities in SE Asia have a Little India) and grabbed some very tasty lunch. One of the specialities we've been told about it roti canai which is an Indian bread that is made with lots of ghee and sweetened condensed milk [View Full Entry]

Didn't find out what this building was but it looked very governmental!
Hungry fish!

Singapore Zoo is fantastic. The animals are all housed in open exhibits which are as natural as possible with hidden barriers and moats etc, rather than scary looking wire cages. It is also one of the few zoos to have white Bengal tigers which Amy was particulary besotted with. I'll attached as many pics as I can! After the zoo we went back to the hostel (we're now starting to call Boon Keng home!) for a shower and a change of clothes. We then went out to meet a big group of the RBS and ex RBS guys from the Singapore [View Full Entry]

Mia has been a superb guide and help for us in Singapore and has managed to get us free passes to the Jurong Bird Park and the Singapore Zoo which is regarded as one of the best in the world. On Thursday, after spending the morning nursing our still slightly sore stomachs we went to meet Mia to pick up the passes. She then came with us to the Bird Park in the afternoon as she hadn't been for a few years. Unfortunately we got there only an hour or so before it closed but as it wasn't too big we [View Full Entry]

Just some of the Dim Sum dishes we had in Holland Drive!

Well, it has taken us a few days but we are now official travellers - we have Delhi Belly!! In the end the rain did die down yesterday so we decided to talk a walk down to Little India for a curry. We settled on a lovely looking place called Khansama Tandoori Restaurant (http://www.khansama.net/Home.aspx) that looked more upmarket that some of the nearby cafes and sat outside amongst the statues to eat. We ordered some great food, as always in Singapore, but within minutes of finishing we had to start the long sprint back to the hostel! We're both still feeling [View Full Entry]

Well, we had been told then when it rains in Singapore, it really rains. Sentosa is a small island just off the south coast of Singapore which is a pleasure resort with various attractions and 3 beaches. We went expecting a day of relaxation after a couple of days pounding the streets but unfortunately, only an hour or so after arriving the heavens opened and we were drenched. Although it meant we didn't want to stay is was actually quite fun getting that wet that quickly. Soaking, we headed back to the mainland and back to the hostel to dry out [View Full Entry]

Chinatown Asia » Singapore » Chinatown
On Monday we met Mia and Cynthia from RBS Singapore at Chinatown where they very kindly treated us to lunch at one of the hawker centres. It was good to have some resident Singaporean advice about the food and they recommended various dishes to us. Particularly tasty was the Laksa, a Malay-Chinese dish with cocount, chili, chicken, cockles and noodles which we will definitely be buying again. After lunch Cynthia and Mia had to head to work so we had a wander around Chinatown, through some of the markets and the OG shopping centre. I saw a really nice set of [View Full Entry]

Yesterday we decided to visit Little India which is only a short way from our hostel. On the first blog entry I think that I wrote we were staying by Lavender tube station, which is wrong. Our nearest tube is Boon Keng, the road we're staying on is Lavender Road. Confusing because there's also a station called Lavender. Here is a link to the tube map if you want to see where we are! Boon Keng is on the purple line. http://www.smrt.com.sg/trains/routemap/routemap.pdf Anyway, realising that Little India is only a short walk down one main road, Serangoon Road, we set off [View Full Entry]

We have arrived Asia » Singapore
We have arrived! The flight was actually not too bad. 13 hours seemed to go pretty quickly, helped by a film, a bit of sleep and lots of excitement. Changi airport is very new, plush and ultra clean. Pretty efficient too, we were out and on the tube (MRT) within minutes. Our hostel was in the north, at Lavender tube stop, just north of Little India. Took us about 30 minutes to get there on the quick and spotless MRT. The hostel is better than expected, a decent sized room with working air conditioning (so badly needed by the time we [View Full Entry]
