This week marks our class' trip to the south of Chile, where we toured Puerto Montt and San Rafael Lake. It was a heck of a time. This is our 2nd and final trip where all 20 of us will be together. Tue, Oct 27 2 more days until our trip to the south! In class we talked about our weekends, as well as what we should to to prepare for our upcoming trip. We were going to take a bus to Puerto Montt, stay there for a day, and then the next day get on our cruise. That made a lot of sense, because after a long bus ride to Puerto Montt, we are going to need to take a rest. There was an option to go in a really comfortable bus for about $4 ... read more
Tues, Oct 20 We got up pretty early, so we had breakfast and jetted to the bus station. I brought my 1 and 1/2 liter of water, figuring that it would be enough. We had about an hour till the bus came, so in the meantime we tried hitch-hiking. It didn't really work, but oh well! Half hour bus ride - we get to Toconao, and it is just deserted. Only a few people were outside, but it was just like a ghost town with nothing open. We went to where there were walls and irrigation canals built by the Incans. We then found a decent size mountain to climb. Evinm and Brad had pointed this mountain out earlier, and we decided to climb it today. Al and I decided to join because we had never ... read more
I am writing this on Friday, October 23rd after a long week trip to the desert. Let's see how much I remember! Tues, Oct 13 I had class today from 10-12, and afterwards, I met up with Andrea (on Sunday we had decided to meet up sometime during the week, so why not Tuesday). I talked to her for about a half hour, and in that half hour my spanish drastically improved. One on one conversations are definitely the way to go :). Afterwards I took a micro home for lunch, but I don't remember what happened after that, haha. Wed, Oct 14 I had class from 10-12 again, and afterwards, I walked to el centro to buy some sunglasses. I decided to buy some from a street vendor, because it took the least time and ... read more
Tues, Oct 6 Today I had class from 10-12. It seems to me that every class I have been to is interesting, because I learn something every day since it's in a different language. That is one of the reasons I was always inspired to learn spanish - because it challenged me. Afterwards, I went to get my Chillean ID, and then returned home for lunch. After lunch, I talked to my brother on skype for 2 hours. That was nice. He mocked me a little bit when he made some ramen noodles; I never thought i'd miss ramen, haha :P. I also watched him play some guitar. He is getting better and better, it is cool. I hung out with my family for the rest of the day - I had dinner, we played some ... read more
Tues, Sept 29 I went to class from 10-12. We talked about what we believed was our best experience thus this far. It was interesting what everyone had to say. A lot of people said that either Santiago (11 people went) or Buenos Aires (4 people went) was their best experience. I told the class that hanging out with my brother and his friends on the 18th was my favorite, although Santiago was a close second for sure. I returned home for almuerzo (which was spaghetti), and then I went with my host dad to run some errands. I went because I wanted something to do besides facebooking all day. I'm glad I went because I learned a lot about my surroundings as we were driving by asking questions and listening to my host dad describe ... read more
Tues, Sept 22 Today, I went to class from 10-12. We worked on writing our autobiographies. After class, I returned home for lunch. I hung out for most of the day, I didn't do too much (in other words, I procrastinated in writing in my travel blog, so I forgot what happened, haha). Wed, Sept 23 Today I had class from 10-12. After We celebrated Jessica and Allison's birthday. We had cake outside the classroom and socialized. That was nice. Then, I chilled with Eric and Lindsay. We had time before out 3pm class, so we walked to the ministery building and tried to get our ID's. However, it was really full with people and there were long lines, so we walked back. We decided just to go to a bar for a while until Eric ... read more
Tuesday, Sept 15 Today, I went to a city called Lota with Profesora Luz and the other students. To sum it up, we went to a museum, walked around a massive park, had lunch, and went through a mine! I wasn't ecstatic about waking up at 7 in the morning, but it also meant a long day :). The bus ride wasn't bad - about an hour - and there were things to look at along the way. We got there and met our tour guides right away. They were there waiting for us, pretty convenienent huh? We then walked to where we were greeted by some of the more important people in Lota. They gave a speech of how they were happy to have us here and all that jazz. It was funny - they ... read more
Tues, Sept 8 Today, I headed to my 10am class. It was an easy class. We talked about the importance of letting your host parents know if something is wrong as well as being honest. Also, we analyzed certain situations in the past where a student didn't tell the host family something about them, and the host family was not too prepared to handle it. I thought most of it was common knowledge that everyone knew, but it didn't hurt bringing the topic up. We then brainstormed ideas for a 5 page essay we need to write. We are required to write an autobiography about 5 aspects about ourselves.. in spanish. Fun stuff, right? Anyways, after class, Al and I walked around and we took some pictures of the Concepcion campus. That was a fun thing ... read more
Tue, Sept. 1st. Today, I woke up, had breakfast, and took the micro with Oliver to class. In class, we talked about our trip to Chillan a week from saturday. We were going to go this weekend, but some of us were going to go skiing instead. Luckily, Luz (director of the program) was able to switch dates. We also went over the "buen/bueno" and "esta/esa" concepts in class. Its nice being in class with people that you know pretty well. Like, today Lindsay helped some of us better understand the esta/esa concept. We make sure that everyone understands. Then, we got into groups and came up with a list of cultural differences that we notice. We came up with a huge list - it was a lot for just being here 2 weeks! In a ... read more
Tue, Aug 25 Today, for our 10:00 class, Jess and I went to the wrong building! Luckily, we saw everybody walk towards the engineering building so we met up with them. Class was nice -we talked about our weekends in spanish. Everyone seemed to be having a good time so far. Then, we discussed what we will be doing in the class over the semester. Afterwards, Lindsay, Brad, Hayley, Eric and I went to get some empanadas at treinta express. They are soo good.. but probably fattening as well, but I didn't care! We then chilled for a while, walked around campus, and watched some baby futbol (they play outside on what is like a small rink for floor hockey). Again, the players were intense! Then, we watched a scrimmage at an actual stadium. They are ... read more
