what a bloody crazy adventure sumatra has been! a far cry from the ho-hum of the cities, the moment we arrived on indo soil it's been go, go, go! waking at 5am, we began our epic journey from singapore to lake toba, a 25 hr non-stop journey consisting of 1 train, 3 ferries & 5 busses. from singapore we took a short ferry to pulau batam, our first indo port where we were to collect visas, change cash and run to the next ferry port to catch the last daily ferry, all in about 15mins. apparantly nobody's ever made it and lived to tell the tale... we had crazy men running alongside us to hurry us up and lead us to the port, ruairi shot off ahead and i was trailing behind fast. mind you, ... read more

hey guys! the blogs are comin in thick and fast these days huh? probably cause i'm not at the pub these days so i have more time in front of the comp...hurraaah! also, we're headed to sumatra in the morn and apparantly internet is a rare find so thought i'd get one more in before then. actually not a hell of alot to say, as we've just been mulling about the 2 citys for the last week... kuala lumpur was pretty cool. we stayed in china town, a colourful, bustling market area. we visited the telecommunications tower which is the fourth highest in the world at 450 metres. during the days we just strolled around the park and the malls, museums, mosques yadayada. the street food there is spot on, we scoffed countless satays and ... read more

we took the 'jungle train' from kota baru headed for taman negara at 6am. it's a really beautiful 6hr journey that ploughs right through the mountains and thick jungle (or so i'm told, i slept most of it). we stayed the night in another crappy 'in-between' town, and headed into the jungle the following morning by boat along the river. the jungle itself is over 4,300 km2, and over 135 million years old. it's been a protected national park for 60 years. the first day ruairi and i set out to do the canopy walk. it's 50 metres above ground in some sections and about 500 metres long, though only half was open as they were repairing ropes. which, although dissapointing, was also comforting as we balanced on a 20cm wide plank, gripping onto a ... read more

ko lanta was pretty nice, though it's officially sealed our 'no-more-thai-islands' deal. we're over it. i'v never been the lie on a beach type and i don't think that'll ever change. we spent 2 days here just pottering around and chilling and playing with the baby lobster thingys on the beach. when we decided to race them we new it was time to leave the island...boredom had soared to new heights. lonely planet on trang; 'we love the vintage tuk-tuks and the lolly coloured vespas.....blabla.....cultural mecca....blabla.....night market....blabla....feast for the senses....blabla'.....NO! what a hole. truley this is by far the worst destination i have ever had the pleasure of visiting in all my travels. filthy, stinkin', creepy, dark hole. it looks like the set of a horror movie, and not a single thing to see or ... read more

we arrived in bangkok on the overnight bus from chiang mai at around 4.30 am. we headed up koa san road in search of a guesthouse and what we found was a bloody mess. this was the bangkok that everyone talks about that we had missed on our first visit due to having stayed on the non-tourist side of town. neon lights. my god! every single major food chain, innumerable pubs, bars, seedy clubs. tourists lying in the gutters (probably in their own vomit), big hairy white men pawing at tiny woman-child prostitutes, big groups of drunken lobster-like irishmen screaming bad renditions of bohemian rhapsody in the hope that their mates in kilkenny can hear. frightening. the following day we ran into lee, the canadian dude from our trek in chiang mai which was cool. ... read more

well! we are outta laos (thankgod!), and in chiang mai, thailand. its a pretty wicked city with loadsa bars and markets. never run outta stuff to do. we spents a couple of days wondering around the night market and hitting the pubs with a canadian couple matt & christy, we met on the 'boat to hell'. us, the boys and the canadians went to a muay thai boxing show, which initially i was pretty hesitant about. we grabbed front row seats and the boys said we may have to watch out for splatted blood and that we'd probably see legs snapped and other things. i felt sick at the thought and didn't really wanna watch and was on about how it isn't right bla bla. but it was actually quite tame, almost to the point ... read more

to start things off, ruairi and i got 'done', by what the lonely planet refer to as 'the hanoi-vientiane bus scam'. unfortunately we were not aware of this scam until half way through the journey, when i picked up the scary planet and started reading about 'the scam' and thought hmm, this sounds familiar... were in the god damn middle of it! basically, we paid $25 each, to have an airconditioned mini bus, for the 16 hr trip. when we asked what the cheaper version was, he said 'nooo', you dont want that, its only slightly cheaper and its a public bus that's filled with livestock. so.we got bundled onto a regular, ricketty, 'fresh' aired, 60 seater, 1940's, tin can, heap of s*** bus, only to find out that most of our fellow passengers paid ... read more

hanoi is a bloody cool city. with half the population of saigon, its much more relaxed but really buzzy at the same time. countless little alley ways with little shops, pattisseries and bars. we spent the day wondering around and going to museums (i'v seen more bloody museums than iv eaten bowls of rice on this trip, so am very much over them). we have come up with a good trick though which we discovered while here. if you go to the museum within half an hour of it closing, not only do you not have to pay, but you are forced to do a whirlwind tour of the museum, meaning you dont feel bad for not studying every last god damn ancient artifact in the joint, and you are still able to walk away ... read more

ruairi and i set off on a 5 day, 4 night highlands tour with dong (the dude that took us on the river cruise). it was a private tour, just us 2, dong, and huan the driver. it was bloody nice to get off the tourist track and into the jungle and mountains! the first day we stopped to see the area where the americans sprayed agent orange during the war. the affect of which is still prevalent on the streets of vietnam, affecting pregnant mothers and causing severe deformities at birth. the land where it was sprayed is rendered useless as the only thing that will grow is bloody grass. along the way we stopped too see brickmaking (hurrah!). the bricks are handmade and all the workers are chicks (women make up 52% of ... read more

this travelblog thing is REALLY trying! this is entry number 2 after nearly 5 weeks of travelling so am having difficulty backdating, as cant bloody remember what i was doing 3 weeks ago! so much for catching up! will give it ago anyway... we had a pretty smooth journey into vietnam, well ridiculously so and damn right embaressing in hindsight! we took a chauffered mercedes to the border, got out, sorted our visas, then got into another brand new 10 seater mercedes into saigon. not exactly backpacking i know, but it seemed like a good idea at the time. saigon is bloody mad! with a population of over 6 million people, its the largest city in vietnam. so of course you're bound to run into someone you know! in my case it was a mate ... read more
