12:30 am - Wake up: Damn. It's morning already, and Sanae is already out of bed. I groan and inwardly curse Sanae for needing so little sleep - she'd gone to bed after I'd fallen asleep and had woken up before me as well, and was now fiddling about int he bathroom. Nihon jin Energizer bunny extraordinaire. 12:35 am - Shuffle into the loungeroom to check the time - 7:00 am. Bugger. It's still dark outside which means it's going to be another bastard of a day. 12:40 am - Dress quickly to protect my delicate self from this freezing nasty morning. 12:45 am - Fold away my bed into the cupboard and wander back into the living area. 12:51 am - Glance up at the clock on the wall. 12:52 am - Whoa.... Double take, ... read more

I blearily focused on the waitress in front of me and held out my index finger "ichi..... no, no iie... ieee..." I fumbled through my bag for my excercise book with Emergency 110 scrawled across the front in red biro. "Hitotsu Sho choo kudasai!!" I cried triumphantly, startling the table next to us and making my own table burst into what I'm assuming was a respectful and admiring combination of laughter and applause. The waitress looked questioningly at me "ichinegatsuginzawallawallawingyokonakanu?" (or something to that effect) I stared at her and tried to focus my muddled brain, not willing to meet defeat and determined to get my drink. I took a deep breath and stared her in the eye, willing this to work. "Melon" The waitress gave me a preplexed look. I tried again. "Merron" "Ahhh so!" ... read more

Sakura, Sakura, Sakura. The cherry blossom trees are honestly the prettiest things I've ever seen in my life. Including the NYE fireworks in Sufers Paradise. I'm so lucky because they only bloom for a week or so, and I arrived at the perfect time so today Sanae and I joined the masses of people chasing the sakura season. First we dressed in kiminos and ran around Sanaes local area amusing folk and trying to get the best photos with Sakura by any means possible. Not sure how many people know you wear 2 layers of underwear under a kimino that stretches all the way to the ground, so it's safe to say that those who missed my performance in the public bath house last Wednesday may have been properly delighted by my flashing of kimino underwear ... read more

They don't do text messaging in Japan. This is by far and away the most foreign and unusual Japanese trait so far. After trekking far and wide through the streets of Tokyo I have a mobile phone now (also a free towel and mushroom man mobile mascot) but I'm not quite used to the fact that I no longer have a mobile as an all important socializing tool, but, in fact as something to use in an emergency. Huh. I didn't really see that one coming in the land of electronics and gadgets, but at least I've finally caught up to the rest of the world and have a camera phone ~~ ... read more

When the large, wet and very naked Japanese woman bent over in front of me I knew this wasn't going to be an average trip abroad. I was sitting in a bath, completely starkers, next to my darling friend Sanae who I had last seen a year and a half ago during a tearful farewell at Phuket Airport after a week of decadance, 10am cocktails and bad behaviour. And now here we were, naked together, 3 hours after my plane had touched down in Japan and I had my brief and bewildering insight into the new life I was meant to be living. To be completely fair it wasn't altogether too bewildering on the train trip to Saitama - I mean trains are trains no matter which country you're in, but because I had never been ... read more
