With air lock time coming to an end I feel as if i have been caught mid jump as I am about to fly out. I have not as yet thoroughly reviewed trauma principals nor have i managed to unknot my swollen heart. There could therefore be no more appropriate time to leave; 'hurry up and wait' at its best. Ma and Pa engulfed me in a cash blizzard yesterday for Christmas on the condition that i do not 1. Die 2. Contract HIV 3. Etc. Joke is on them cause I was never going to do any of those things anyway. I have printed all of my documentation in triplicate, stuffing the lining of my bags with photocopies of my face. It has been an odd experience saying goodbye to people over the last few ... read more

The preparations for this years journey are nearly complete. I have started revising both the australian resus council protocols and the life and works of leonard cohen. My partner in traumatic activities, Merv, has this morning undertaken the flight to South Africa and will begin to establish our standard operating procedures for the next four weeks. I decided to go ahead and purchase an international drivers permit out of some vague sense that it will shield me from future regret. More than once in a day i am looking into puddles looking for some validation of my gutache. So it goes, Samuel Facebooker... read more

Chistmas is here; the time for being with the ones you love. In this mixed up crazy old world though, I have found myself once again leaving town and setting out on finding somthing that is both abstract and elusive. This writing will, however, hopefully keep me close enough to those that I love to let them know in their heart of hearts that i have not been killed. Mery Christmas, Horatio Lawnspreader... read more

South America » Brazil » Paraná » Foz do Iguaçu December 24th 2008

We got pretty tanned at illha do mel and then we flew to foz, man planes are far superior to busses, in fox we checked into an actual hotel, it had a fountain out the front and everything. We therefore watched a few hours of tv in our air conditioned room cause apparently rainforrests are hot. We at dinner at a all you can eat barbeque and oh my, best sausages in the world, in the world. The next day we visited both the argentinian and brazilian side of the falls, it is easy to do both in the one day. The argentinian side first is the way to do it, verry tranquil and beautiful, made me think of tazan. oh the only problem is that it got a bit crouded at times. the brazil side ... read more

South America » Brazil » Paraná » Ilha do Mel December 24th 2008

After an overnight bus ride down to Curitiba and a two hour bus down to pontal do sul we took a little boat out to the island to see the first real sun in the Brazil part of our trip. The island has no cars and has a protected northern end which Lachlan is convinced contains some kind of top secret military base, due to the very buff perk rangers on the island and big wire fences, that or the womb of the earth, i cant remember which he decided. Anyway because of our many acquired souveneirs the three and a half kilometer hike down the beach to our hostel was quite a struggle, myself acquiring a couple of blisters. Our bags weigh about 44 kilograms between them. Our pousada was home to a lovely woman ... read more

South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro » Búzios December 18th 2008

Buzios is a trendy little costal town just north of rio; kind of reminded me of a theme park without the rides, just the shops. Some places worth mentioning are Chez Crepe, probably the best most extensive selection of crepes i have ever seen, captains bar and the bar across the road from captains bar where you can listen to 5 units of live music and watch the waves trying to macro elusive geckos. We rented a buggy (the red devil) which was fun but driving in the pooring rain may have been dangerous with no wipers and all. That and the difficulties which ensued each time we had to reverse, which lachlan tells me he mentioned later on... Andrew found it best if he leaned out the side while driving. When we first got the ... read more

South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro » Rio de Janeiro » Copacabana December 16th 2008

Hey, we are now in brazil, or we have been for a few days but to lazy to write anything. The flight from lima had a 30 us departure tax, and andrew got all his toiletries thrown out by security and got pissed off about it, haha he is still sore. I was stupid and packed a bottle of grog, classy grog mind you, in my carry on whish was swiftly binned. After geting to rio via sao paulo we checked into che legarto 1 copacobana. since then its been raining, there isnt alot to do in rio in the rain. been to the hippie fair, all you can eat bbqs and cafes. We will still go hangliding when the rain clears up and i will eventualy convince andrew that having chocolate and strawberry pizza for ... read more

South America » Peru » Lima » Lima » Miraflores December 13th 2008

The train back to cusco was nice and long, and made longer still by our refusal to get off and take a buss into cusco from the outlying station, Poroy, which would have saved us half an hour travel time. We got back to cusco pretty late and decided to shun the questionable saftey of a taxi and walk arround on foot. Dinner was at McDonnalds, woops, but i managed to scoff down some cultural street food on the way there. Our 20 hr buss ride was ok, though they played the worst movie i have ever seen ´el analphabe´ which i blame for my sore eyes and the subsequent removing of my contacts. When we got back to lima we checked into the Loki hostel here, also great. We have pretty much bummed arround here ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Aguas Calientes December 10th 2008

So our last night in cusco involved experienceing the delicacies of the street vendors and the local markets. We had meat and one veg on a stick, some kind of fried sausage on a stick, tea made from some type of grass, oil flavoured doughnuts and juice of three mangoes. And our GITs are still intact. We also came across the wholesaler of all the souvenier stores over here. Bought some local Pisco for almost nothing then went to bed to wake up too early for the train. The train ride was largely uneventlful, aguas calientes is a very touristy town, with everyone gauging tourists for money. But its not as ugly as you read about, surrounded by verdant (scrabble word) mountains and has a fast flowing river. We just got back from machu pichu and ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco » Cusco December 8th 2008

We came up from copa, stayed one night in puno and are now in cusco. Our hostel, LOKI, is awesome, so much to do and so many travelers, oh and they are playing harry potter rite now, woop. The first day was of general exploration of the city, then going out to a restaurant too expensive for us, but it was good food. Next finding our friend from the dorm wre are in Nick, we headed out on the town hittting up the local, called kamakase. One moment there was oasis playing then a traditional peruvian band with pan pipes and everything. Rocking out whilst drinking on particular soup sized cocktail to whatever the one tonne rodeo song is. Returned late up the enormous staircase which is the street of our hostel, for some reason was ... read more
