Yes come to Egypt! - From: Back to the grindstone...
Your family will be fine especially if you stay somewhere like Ma'adi, very westernised with lots of foreigners and community groups, also Zamalek, 6 October and Sheikh Zayed. I am sure you will get a nice apartment. The driver is probably just to help you with transport, I have heard of this before. We really enjoy it here, even in Sadat, because it is such a great opportunity to be here and experience Egypt. If you are prepared to accept they do things differently here and go with it, you will really enjoy it too. I think you have been offered a great opportunity so if you do accept it, please get in contact as we will be here a while yet.

Hello - From: Back to the grindstone...
Hello mel and erin I have just been offered a job in Sadat, with a company called Sonut. The chairman was on the phone today begging me to fly out there this weekend and come and live there before the end of the month, it all seems so strange. I only applied on the internet yesterday to see what it was all about. Have you heard of them. Reading your blog has been great. I am 28 years old and my wife is younger then me and we have a 6 month old baby. The chap from the company said we would have our own drivers and cars and they would pay for a house for us. But he said we would probably not want to live in Sadat and suggested Cairo and explained everyone lives in Apartments there. It all seems to be going so fast. He has offered to fly us out there this Thursday and sign up on Sunday, this is extremely fast movement for recruitment, and all seems so strange. Would you say there would be stuff for my wife and child to do in Cairo is there an english speaking community. Do you feel it would be safe for them when I'm at work. And is it normal to be given a driver for 24 hours a day is this for security? It all seems so strange but exciting at the same time. Wha do you think of living there in short. The mentions of smell and sewers all seem a bit of putting. James

Yes it is an ornamental pool. Alexandria has interesting history but there is hardly anything left now, a lot of the ancient buildings are at the bottom of the harbour.

hi mel, is that a pool outside the library? it does look flash. i would like to go to alexandria, those ptolemy books i was reading talked a lot about all the greek stuff and building the light house and about how they invented serapis. all that ancient stuff is so interesting.

Women wearing tight jeans - From: Funny things about Egypt
I am sorry you are offended that I commented on women wearing tight jeans. I have seen a lot of ladies wearing tight clothing, not just one. And you are right, I did comment on it because I was surprised to see it in a Muslim country. Yes, the West does do "this sort of garbage" worse than in Egypt, but does that make it OK? Please don't put words in my mouth - I never said EVERYONE in Egypt did it, nor that I wanted to see it. You seem very upset, so YOU obviously care, it's a pity you couldn't take your own advice and shrug it off.

Egyption
Your mean - From: Funny things about Egypt
Should we care. I was born in canada but am Egyption in backround, and most of the stuff your saying includes offensive, fake, and plain idiotic trash that most people with the right mind would shrug off. Women wearing jeans so tight that it would be obcene in the West? First of all, thats most likely a lie. Secondly if there is a chance that isnt a lie, your an exploiting exagerating fool, you probably saw 1 girl wearing tight jeans, just like any other woman wearin tight jeans in the West, and you mention it here because you know Egyptions are muslims, and they are basically not supposed to show their "curves" because it averts pervertic eyes. OF COURSE your gonna see egyption/muslim women around the world NOT wearing hijab, wearing tight clothes and all that. BUT you cant make it seem as if everyone does that in Egypt. And no the WEST does this sort of garbage way worse then in Egypt. Why should you care in the first place? Your telling us you want women to show their skin on the street? Thats just moronic.

hello again - From: Days of Sadat
Hi Melanie and Erin. I heard that you are struggling with back pain again, Melanie. We are praying for you here in N.Z. and hope that you will recover soon. Glad that you were able to find a cake for Erin's birthday - sounds yummy! Ben and I started another round of the Marriage Course on 8th August. Keep the news coming - we enjoy hearing how you are doing.

Happy belated birthday Erin - From: Days of Sadat
Hi , Belated birthday greetings Erin. Although the Pizza didn't live up to expectations it sounds as thought the cake made up for the disappointment. All well back here. Its been a very wet winter - usually on the weekends!! However today has been an exception so I got out in the garden for some much needed weeding - made easier by the damp soil. Daniel made himself a sign called "Daniels cave - dare to enter at the risk of death - so don't think I'll be looking in - oh great the cat's just been sick all over the lounge floor - will get back to this in a minute ............................... Back again - GPC is having an international lunch in a couple of weeks so should be interesting. When you come back to NZ you'll be able to treat us to some Egyption specialities - as long as its not PIZZA!!! I haven't managed to find a new home group yet - work is incredably flat out at the moment and I have been working pretty much full time so with that and all the after school activities I'm pretty tired these days. Silva is off to the Cold Kiwi motorcycle rally next month. I guess its hard to imagine how cold it has been here this winter. Well, its goodbye for now - keep up the news I'm really enjoying hearing all about your time in Egypt. Love Lesandre

Hospital - From: The Hospital
Alasdair-ed anymore workbenches lately? Sounds like the general frustrations of those who live on an isolated island like Niue. Things not arriving by boat & running out etc...expensive... Wonder how long it will take for the hospital to be built? Looks like work is progressing well?

Good on you two - From: The Hospital
You can appreciate why it takes so long for jobs to get finished in places like this. I'm pleased that you aren't stressing because there isn't any point. Great to see that you guys are having such a fantastic time. The other night there was a segment on 60 minutes or something similiar about wrestling in NZ which I taped for you. Will have to remember to put the tape somewhere safe now, for how long???? How long will you be working on this job? Take care, enjoy the heat, bloody freezing here but we're now on to the third most glorious winter's day in a row so can't complain

Rubbish - From: Al Azhar Park
So the accumulated rubbish buried the old gates & walls 15ft plus and the rise to the cemetary is unexcavated waste also? Earlier blogs show other gardens you've visted - have these been on waste land or specially set apart. I would have thought there would have been really high land demand cos of the size of the city but it seems such gardens are highly valued because of the resources which must go into creating & maintaining them.......

tops & gardens - From: The Nile Barrages at Qanatir
I can see what you mean re the tops the girls wear ie purple scarfed chick. The gardens look well looked after and a lovely place to be. Do the barrages act like aquaducts ie irrigation channels / do they regulate the flow in/ out of the two tributaries?

Personally I drink as little as possible and just hang on. Not sure about significance of churches but they all contain relics of saints. Egyptians never turn up on time, we went to the Arabic Anglican service which supposedly started at 7 but no-one was there till about 7.30 and then it started at 8.

Very interesting excursion - From: Forty Day ceremony in Qena
If you travel for 10 hours in the train & don't use the train loo - what do you use? Must have been really unpleasant in chapel with the smell, not nice to think about. Does the St Peter, Paul chapel have historic significance? The painted surfaces look terrific and remind me of UK medieval painted churches. You saying folk including clergy arrived late reminds me of what Barry A said about lectures he gave in Egypt & culturally how it seemed the later you arrived the more important you were... Must say Erin looks good in the Galabayah. Maybe people take their bread home as a memorial?
