These rock formations are made by tourists and it is said if you make a tower, come back and find it, you will have good luck forever.

Strange Rock Formations - From: Aruba - Desert in an Island
The strange rock formations that you comment about , are simply markers. Local fishermen would come to that part of the island and if they caught good fish , they would leave stones there to mark the spot. Eventually tourists like your self and I saw these strange formations and many visitors replicated it. Imagine how hard this made it for the local fishermen.

Rock piles - From: Aruba - Desert in an Island
Hi, I saw these rock piles in Peru myself. From whatI recall they were built as prayers to mother nature....kinda like lighting a candle in a Christian church. I've seen the little rock piles in a few places though - like Cambodia and China.

Excellent story Kit_t. I like pictures of food too. Most people think I'm nutz zooming in on the food on the table. Pain in the backside at the time, but a great memory for the future. Thanks.

Yeah...Anything that says Taliban is good is a terrorist. Btw, you can see a lot of people with Asiatic (or mongoloid ) features even in Poland , Slovakia and even in Greece. That is courtesy to Ghengis Khan. He paved his seeds till Eastern Europe.. :)

re: tourist vs locals - From: Samarkand - Daniel's tomb, mosques and of course more food
just to clarify (see my comment inline of the blog as well) - I perfectly understand to inflate prices for tourists, but a 40X hike for a single building that can be seen in 5 mins is a bit steep. If you were talking about something like the Taj Mahal, maybe its justifiable.

tourist vs locals - From: Samarkand - Daniel's tomb, mosques and of course more food
I'm embarrassed that you didn't understand why they needed to rip off the tourists while keeping it cheap for the locals. As a tourist, paying the fees to the local tourist authority is a good thing, as it goes towards the upkeep. It also keeps the price low for the poor people of the country who can't really afford it.

tourist fee - From: Samarkand - Daniel's tomb, mosques and of course more food
enjoyed your 1st day travelogue. As for tourist feeling ripped off: one has to be forgiving during travels to these impoverished countries, who depend on the tourist currency not only to feed their families but in a large number of cases, upkeep the sites, when the govt. doesn't pay.

Well, that was a fun read! Thanks for all the laughs Kit! Sounds like you and Mel have some stories to tell the grand kids! It is fun to read about other people's airport experiences! After living in China for 2 years we can all relate to the "granny with her trolley" and the "loudly snoring guy on aeroplane" and many more like that.

Now, when I comment on how monks ought to behave, I am not trying to defend their behavior. In fact, I'm just trying to offer you an insight into what their life must be like. A very wise woman (my mother) told me once that they are just humans with very human weaknesses and desires. Life is a constant struggle in that they have to try and suppress their wants and needs. Life is a temptress. In his human form even His Holiness admits to fighting temptations and these guys are just amateurs on a long journey to nirvana. So grant them some compassion and understanding. I hope your journey to Tibet was otherwise fun. And hey, you never know. He could be text debating another monk somewhere...or texting his girlfriend as you suspect. I hope not the latter because that by default is not monkhood. Enh! Sometimes I don't understand my own culture, but I know for the most part it is beautiful and very likeable. Anyway, on behalf of the six, five, four (??) million Tibetans, my utmost apologies for the shock factor. I hope you enjoyed Tibet and please come again! :) Tenzin

I totally agree with the last comment, when you visit other countries try and show some respect and be open minded to other cultures, if you cannot manage even this small thing stay home in your own little world. Having visited Tunisa i found it a fasinating country with some of the most friendly people i have had the pleasure of meeting.

As a muslim born and raised in Dallas,TX, most of the muslims are not like that. I can say however mainly the Middle East are like that. Of course Muslim does not equal terrorist! Peace

Well the yellow stuff that has been mentioned above isnt really made of cow dung or something like that. It is actually made from the paste of Sandal wood. The beauty of hyderabad - From: A short stop in Hyderabad
It seems like you`ve missed a lot in hyderabad. Having stayed for 22 years in hyderabad and coming to the USA after that, I still feel hyderabad has a lot to see than many of the major cities in USA. If you search for you can find a lot in a city that is 550 years old, untouched by the british and ruled by the nawabs for centuries. Hyderabad is the best showcase of the nawabian culture. The charminar, built by one of the nawabs, is like the statue of liberty for NYC. The old city, which is the older part of hyderabad has the chudi bazaar, where you can find some of the best jewellery in the world, everything made with hand to perfection. The birla mandir, a temple midst of the city is a quiet place to spend an evening. Hyderabadi food is one of the best you can find in the world. Hyderabad biryani, pani puri, chole batura...to name a few are mouth watering hyderbadi dishes. I bet you would find hyderabad interesting if you dig deeper. You can contact me at muralipadala@yahoo.com if you want to know more. Murali - Murali
