Day 27 - July 27 The bus to Altai was a full size charter bus. We drove through the night from Novosibirsk to Altai, first stopping at a rest stop at 1 am, where we had dinner. Then we were off again. We stopped in the morning for breakfast in some little highway town. Our guide ordered us breakfast but they ran out of food. We bought a couple of things in a nearby shop before setting off again. We started dropping off groups at various locations before coming upon our drop-off at about 1pm. It was a grassy valley surrounded by rocky mountains to the north and forested mountains to the south. There was also a muddy river snaking along in between. We started to organize our bags as they gave us an extra sleeping ... read more

Day 24 - July 24 It was time to head off to Russia via a 2 day train to Novosibirsk. But first we went around town finishing chores, buying souvenirs and the like. We caught a 'cab' to the train station. By cab I we mean random person with a car willing to drive us for money. We arrived at the train station walked to the train (no gates or anything - anyone can walk right up to the train) and boarded our carriage. The layout of the train was identical to the Chinese one but was more modern. We had a room for four to ourselves again which was nice. The train headed off as we passed through familiar terrain (thankful that even though the ride was long 53 hours) at least it wasn't bumpy. ... read more

Day 21 - July 21 Back to UlanBaatar, well at least the start of it. We dropped off the British couple who smartly were flying back, and made a long bumpy drive north. It was more of the same desert steppe except that it was raining so hard, it was flooding. Who knew that the Gobi desert was the wettest part of Mongolia? In fact it rained more in the 5 days in the Gobi than it had in the previous 8 months in Dalian and the entire rest of the 16 days in Mongolia. We arrived at our ger, our last night on the desert and with camels. The dog wasn't fond of us but a young girl chased him off with a volleyball. It rained. It was in the middle nowhere and yet was ... read more

Day 17 - July 17 We had the morning off as our old group was finished and heading back to Ulaanbataar and we had a British couple join us for the next few days. Once all that was sorted out we headed south to the ruins of a monastery complex called Ongiin Khiid, destroyed during the communist purge. It was a long drive. The first few hours was more of the same grassy hills, but soon enough as we left the province and entered the Gobi desert it became very flat rocky and sparsely grassy. There was points were you could see for 100km with nothing in the horizon but flat land. Herds and gers were rare. Driving here and for much of the time through the Gobi was much faster and less bumpy due to the ... read more

Day 14 - July 14 We woke up to start our drive to a hot spring. We started our drive along the lake before veering by the volcano and the surprisingly large lava fields filled with black broken rocks and short stunted pine trees. Shortly after we were back in the typical grassy hills and we arrived for lunch at the provincial capital and the largest nearby town of Tsetserleg. We tried to go to a restaurant but it was closed. So for a town of just under 20000 there was only one open restaurant. We had to wait a while for them to get to our order and they only served fried dumplings. We bought supplies and ate lunch and were off again for another few hours, finally arriving at the Tsenkher hot springs in the ... read more

Day 11 - July 11 We woke up early. It was a day of long driving. It was also Nadaam, the big yearly Mongolian sports festival. We drove along the lake, passing by the reindeer camp, passing Khatgal and along the largely flat but bumpy road all the way to Moron. Being the largest city in the region, it had the largest festival events. We first drove to an area a kilometre or two from town. It was the finish line of the horse racing. The grounds were filled with people, cars and horses. A few 'shops' were set up on tables over to one side. A couple of carnival games like ring toss and balloon dart were there set up by enterprising individuals. There were also 3 gers set up as restaurants although the fee itself ... read more

Day 8 - July 8 Finally a break from driving all day. Also the first significant activity. Horseback riding on the smaller but half-wild Mongolian horses for almost four hours along the lakeside of Khovsgol lake. My horse was a larger stallion and was easily the most wild or rebellious of the bunch. Being the biggest male of the group has some downsides He was brown with an orangish Mohawk haircut. After mounting the horses with Western style but clearly Mongolian made saddles, mine wouldn't stay still. It had been over a dozen years since I had ridden one of the beasts. They are noticeably shorter than their European cousins of which I am familiar, though shorter legs made mounting them easy for me. We started of walking them through Khatgal and over a hill pass in ... read more

Day 5 - July 5 We headed off on the tour in the morning with a Belgium couple and two Taiwanese girls, our guide and the driver in an old Soviet van. It was a tank. First we stopped to pick up supplies at a local market. Then we were off driving for a total of 7 hours. Initially it was quite flat and rough dirt road (the highway was being paved). But soon enough as we headed north it started to get hilly. We passed numerous gers and hundreds of cattle. The further we got away the smaller and less frequent the settlements. Occasionally we'd pass a vast tract of land clearly set aside for farming (as opposed to grazing). Couldn't figure out what they were growing however. The first stop was a sort of ... read more

Day 1 - July 1 It is time to begin the third major trip since arriving in the Middle Kingdom. First up, Mongolia! The train to Beijing was at night, so my partner and I left home after 4pm. We arrived at the train station with some time so we grabbed some chuar (BBQ) and sat down outside to eat. We headed into the station and got onto our soft sleepers. Roughly 1st class here. Our cabin was shared with a young Chinese couple. Day 2 - July 2 About 12 hours later we arrived in Beijing. We navigated to the hotel through some hutongs(read: alleyways) near the train station. My room was overlooking the train yard. No Internet even though they advertised they had it and were completely confused when we asked for it. We headed ... read more

End of Year School Well, it's the end of the school year, and all that's left is some odds and ends mainly about grades. Was assigned to teach 8 Science 10's this year, but in both semesters I got bumped off a couple of those for other classes:Math 10 and Chem 11. The language and the work ethic overall of the second semester was noticably worse. Almost 10% of them rarely (if ever) show up. School doesn't seem to be able to do anything about it. (As there is no threat of expulsion). Laziness is rampant, in part due to the mismatch between the two cultures. Where normally here in this country, attendance (even if asleep the whole time with no work done) means a pass, and teachers often get 'bonuses' to ensure higher marks. It ... read more
