Thursday May 3 I flew into Xi'an at night. I caught the airport shuttle for 26 RMB into the city centre. It took about an hour to go in. I navigated myself to my hostel. It got exceedingly high reviews online and seems a great place by my first impression. Friday May 4 I got a tour to the Terracotta Warriors, an emperor's tomb nearby and BanPo, a neolithic village 6000 years old. My tour guide from the hostel was good, if a bit over energetic and over-zealous at times. The group was great. It had everything: An older magician and his wife, a young Australian pastor and his wife, A Welsh couple and two American ladies teaching in China, a pair of travelling sisters, and a Korean and Swiss university student studying Chinese on exchanges. ... read more

May 3rd 2012

For the may break the plan is to spend 6 days in Beijing, whilst applying for a Mongolian visa, then finish off with 1 or hopefully 2 days in Xi'an. Day 1 - Sat Apr 28 I flew to Beijing on Saturday morning. I appreciated how the beijing terminals are walking distance away so it eliminates the need of a time-consuming shuttle unlike recently visited megacities: Shanghai and Manila. I caught the airport express train to the city for 25 yuan. Upon arriving, I broke out my trusty compass and map and navigated myself to my hostel which was tucked away in a hutong (alley) some distance away. I got settled and figured out my course of action. I decided on visiting the Summer Palace in the outskirts of the city. I walked along to the ... read more

Tuesday May 1 After living more than 1 year in China, on this date I finally climbed the Great Wall. This blog is a split off of the main blog on my Beijing trip (mainly for the pictures). The bus ride to the wall was almost 3 hours long. The base of the wall was of course exclusively touristy. It was a combination of high end China with a fancy mural map description, cable car, sled but with the tourist stalls more reminiscent of developing Asia. I decided to walk up the wall and take the sled down. It was a good idea but if I was able to do it again I would've just started in a village by the wild wall and walked to Mutianyu. This way the fee is tiny (a couple of ... read more

A much delayed blog: Less than 6 days after I got back from a 5 week long excursion to Vietnam and Philippines with the (relatively) warm balmy weather I was off again, this time to the opposite temperature extreme: Harbin (or Haer'bin) to see the Ice Festival. The train was booked so I headed down to the train station. No english spoken or written anywhere so I was left to my own wits to figure out where to go. The first problem was that my ticket was all Chinese and I couldn't even tell any of the information aside from date and time (numbers). The second problem was that everything in the train station was also in Chinese. Not even sure what I was looking for I tried to match anything on the ticket to any ... read more

February 18th 2012

Feb 11th It is a flight day. I woke up to take a flight to Manila and then after a 4 hour wait, take a connecting flight to Coron City on Busuanga Island. There were regular boats between El Nido and Coron, but I had already bought flight tickets. The hotel I was at drove me to the airport. We boarded and left the airport about 30 minutes early, thus arriving at Manila 30 minutes ahead of schedule (the wonders of a small airport). I was in Manila for several hours, picked up a new set of headphones to replace the ones that stopped working the day before. My flight to Coron was delayed by 1.5 hours. I arrived in the small airport and found Vicky who ran the guesthouse I was going to. They drove ... read more

February 10th 2012

Feb 5thCebu - Puerto Princesa I woke up and it was raining a bit, and I had a flight at 11am so I decided to not try to see Cebu instead take an easy morning. I grabbed a taxi to the airport, and this time negotiated a flat rate that was the exact same as I paid for the metered to the hotel. If you know the flat rate, it’s the way to go. Unlike the old wisdom of meters being safe, it’s just not true anymore. I got to the airport, which was relatively small for the second largest transport hub in the country. Cebu Pacific Air (which I exclusively flew with) is based out of here. Virtually every airport in Philippines has only 2 destinations: Manila (or the nearby Clark) and Cebu. I got ... read more

Feb 1st – HCMC – Manila – Legazpi – Donsol It’s a true travel day. Flight from HCMC to Manila at 1am, arriving at Manila at 4:30am. I relaxed there for a couple of hours, managed to find a good cinnamon bun (oh the things you miss) – hard to find a good one. I almost missed my flight because I forgot to change my watch. In my defense I got off the plane at 4:30am having 2 hours sleep. I was looking at the departures board and saw “Boarding” for my flight. Given that it was 1 ½ hours before the scheduled time, I was confused but quickly realized my watch was an hour behind. The hour long flight to Legazpi, a small city on the southern region of the main island of Luzon, was ... read more

January 31st 2012

Jan 30th This was another long (12 hour) bus ride, except during the day. It was a sleeper but had less leg room so was cramped. Every long distance bus in Asia stops at these bus stop restaurants with quick meals (usually not very good), maybe some snacks and public bathrooms. It’s the standard procedure. Normally with night buses you hit them at night and they’re messy forgettable affairs. This one was easily the nicest bus lunch stop location I have ever seen. It was on the ocean with palm trees and a little golf course, and dry rocky mountains in the background. After waiting an extra 20 minutes for a Chinese family to get their act together and realize that the entire bus was waiting for them (not that they cared), we were once again ... read more

Jan 26th - Hanoi It was the last day before heading south, and I wanted to take a look at Ho Chi Minh’s embalmed corpse at the mausoleum, which is only open in mornings. I went with 2 others in a taxi to the mausoleum. It was a large line over a block long. Security was quite tight. No bags or cameras were allowed. Special guards dressed in white uniforms were all long the way. The building itself wasn’t that large. We passed by about 5 guards before entering the antechamber with the body sealed in a glass box, surrounded by 9 guards with rifles attached with bayonets. We shuffled through and outside into the main grounds. After grabbing our cameras we decided to check out Ho Chi Minh’s palace, which wasn’t that spectacular, just highly ... read more

January 25th 2012

Jan 23rd I woke up early in the morning to start getting ready for the upcoming 3 day Halong Bay trip. I had decided to go with the hostel’s trip as they were one of the only nes running, and they weren’t charging excessive “Tet” fees. After a breakfast of French bread, there was a large group of 66 crowded in the hostel. After a short spiel, we headed off in about 5-6 buses. The trip there was uneventful, punctuated by a commissioned stop to on of the common tourist stores (read: trap), where everything was 50%-1000% more expensive. After a 45 minute long ’20 minute stop’ the caravan of buses headed off to Halong City to the wharfs. I slept most of the way. The wharf wasn’t much to speak of. The small docks were ... read more
