I am on a journey through Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala on my Dakar motorcycle experiencing the present moment. My goal is to find adventure from travels on my motorcycle and find inner rewards from volunteering for Project Somos when I arrive in Guatemala.

I am an Agrologist that has worked in the areas of soil conservation and sustainable agriculture in Canada. Throughout my travels I will seek to improve my knowledge of Central American agricuture and ways to improve its sustainability. As well, I plan to learn more about simple building techniques that will enhance the development of Project Somos.

Project Somos is in the process of developing a children's village for orphaned and abandoned children in Guatemala. The Village will provide an opportunity for about 50 children to be brought up in a loving setting while learning to be community leaders.

We had a rough initial 2 days (Olympia, Wa to Rohnert Park, Ca) due to a few weather concerns..snow, slush, and rain..lots of it. But yesterday and today were wonderful. Yesterday we drove from Rohnert Park, Ca (50 m N of San Francisco) to Grover Beach, Ca. It was a real treat to ride along the Pacific Coast Hwy in DRY warm weather. This morning it was quite cool but quickly warmed up to about 80-85 degrees by the time we reached San Diego. Wayne had to pick up a few parts for his bike and I had the 2 tires installed that I have been dragging all over til now...boy does the bike ever handle better now. Poor Wayne so far has been the winner with his 'hole in the bucket' list.. lost his duffel ... read more

Well here I am writing this note while looking around me at the newly fallen SNOW. Wayne should arrive in a few hours with his truck to load up my bike for travel to Olympia, WA. Thank goodness we were not planning on taking off from here. I have packed all the gear onto my bike...it sure does look well loaded. However, I have some pockets of unused space in the panniers. Also the tires will be put on somewhere in California so that added dimension will be gone fairly soon. Wayne arrived safely at about 2:30 from Kelowna. After some serious gear and travel discussions, we are now ready to proceed tomorrow. Adios amigos!!... read more

Well I guess its best it happens now rather than later. Apparently the water pump shaft seal is a weak point on the F650Gs model...just happened to notice a drop of coolant at the bottom of the engine and sure enough the coolant reservoir was empty. So I have the left side of the engine apart to repair the worn seals. This job is not an easy one due to an oil return pipe that tests your patience and ingenuity. I thought that my downloaded shop manual was fairly complete, but now I realize different since it just seems to leave me in mid-stream trying to figure what procedure comes next...just when I need the information most. Most other preparatory items are coming along pretty well. My travel partner, Wayne, has been doing a wonderful job ... read more
