On to the next adventure
Well, it's September 13th here in Illinois. I'm not sure how far it is from Swaziland to Egypt, but I'm guessing you're in transit right now. Hope that when you get there, you find Egypt to your liking. I know very little about it; pyramids and deserts and people wearing white is what comes to mind. You'll have to fill me in on the the details! Love, Hope

Da
Just got the email from your mom. So sorry and wish I could be there to rock you in a rocking chair (no that probably wouldn't work) or give you a drink of water from the glub glub water jug. Things were much simpler when you were a toddler. I'm thinking of you and praying for you and your dad. He has always been and still is a man I greatly admire and respect. Love you, Aunt Brionn

lizards
I get the "wow" feeling every time I go back to Jordan, although now it tends to be "Wow, I'm BACK in Jordan." My first dig season I saw and wrote about 3 different kinds of lizards. Two were very colorful but since that first time haven't seen anything except the usual you-can't-see-me-in-the-sand tan and brown. It's great to be able to keep up with you via blog. None of those 2-month delays while the ship carries the letters across a couple of oceans.

I've heard, though not tried it, that wearing a wedding ringlooking ring you can point to helps.

Sounds great!Am sending your blogaddress to Kim. I think Graham Greenedidn't take the full range ofyellow(or other colors too) voices into account. " 'yellow voices sing, black voices gargle, and white voices just speak...and give an impression of numbers" Korean can sound like sneezing.... And Spanishof Andalucia sounds like a fountain, an ongoing burble and splash. I think Americans sound like barking, the more emphatic the speaker the barkier:RuffruffrrrRUFF ruffRUFRUFFrruffruff. rufffRUFFruff! What's Siswati sound like?Notjust gargling, surely? Incidentally: Westerners always thought"perfect pitch"was an inborn fluky talent of genius musicians -- til it was discovered that most Chinese kids have it(because they have to learn so many tones to speak). But I wouldn't describe Chinese as musical. I'd have to think about that... hmmm... my space bar is sticky...

hey mama
Is it only the men who say "hey mama?" Do men of all ages say it? We have a client at work who addresses women that way, staff included, and he is not from Swaziland. It may not be so much about the culture as it is about how some men world wide talk to an attractive woman. I am glad to hear he was harmless. I have to give him points for following you after the horrible death comment. Obviously he was not faint of heart.

Catching up
You're there! Made it through Johannesburg (sp) and to Swaziland with no true crises? I'm very glad to read that. Looking forward to your next post, and getting an address so I can start sending packages! On the hair -- my humble opinion? Get it cut just above the shoulders, but skip the dye (the chemicals can make fragile hair even weaker). Besides, your hair is a beautiful color as is. I'm sure it's just the stress of travel, and of the unknown future that is causing the thinning. You're young and your body will acclimate, and your hair will be Just Fine! Love, Hope

Samoan lizards
We had a really ugly puffy whitish lizard that lived under the tapa hanging in the livingroom. We left him alone and he left us alone. It worked pretty well.

glad to hear from you
Sounds like you're getting a good taste of the world, even if it's only a few bites. Glad you've updated your blog. Facebook doesn't have the details I'm hungry for! References to camels, cryptic messages about dark blue, etc. just aren't enough! I'd like to hear more about your adventures from Swaziland to Egypt to Israel. Even if you think they're not newsworthy, I have a feeling they'll be an interesting read. But you probably have 100 people writing the same thing, so BLOG it, girl! Love, Hope
