. "So many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation because they are conditioned to a life of security, conformity, and conservatism, all of which may appear to give one peace of mind, but in reality nothing is more dangerous to the adventurous spirit within a man than a secure future. The very basic core of a man's living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun."

Alright, one final blaaahg here from the Lima airport. Iīve left this for an activity on my list of things to do to help pass the time duirng my 8 hour layover (grumble). Number one on the list was to bat my eyes and beg to get bumped to an earlier flight. But the nice man at the counter kindly informed me that there are only 2 flights to LA tonight; mine, and one that leaves 40 minutes later at 1:50am. So Iīm stuck. But lucky for you that means that Iīve got some time to upload my pictures from the [View Full Entry]

Okay I've got a lot of catching up to do, so don't start reading this unless you've got time 'cause it's going to be a long one! Over the last week I've been all over the southern part of the country. To give you some indication, I've spent nearly 30 hours on a bus and 8 on a boat. Until recently I wouldn't have considered myself "patient" when it comes to traveling by bus, but I am learning to enjoy it. . sort of. My iPod has gotten a lot of mileage and I am onto my 3rd book! Last week [View Full Entry]

Time for another update! Iīve added some more pictures from my weekend which was full of Peruvian cultural immersion. Friday night we had a birthday party for my homestay sister, Rossi. It was pretty wild, lots of friends and family at the house for food and dancing. It kind of felt like everyone came to stare at the gringas, but we made the most of it and had a good time. Then Saturday morning Erika and I took our chances and hopped a local bus to hang out in Pisac for the day. There is nothing quite like riding a crowded [View Full Entry]

Donīt have too much time to write today, Iīve spent the last hour trying to figure out how to post my pictures (grumble), so Iīll have to let my pictures do most of the talking. Iīve just come off my weekend at Machu Picchu and words nor photos can begin to capture the essence of that place. We took a beautiful 4 hour train ride on Saturday morning and spent most of Saturday wandering around the town of Aguas Calientes which is at the base of the mountain. After we tired from this we took a dip in the thermal baths, [View Full Entry]

Where to begin. . .this week has been an absolute whirlwind and Iīve seen too much to type about, but letīs start with the highlights, eh? Thursday the 4 other students in the program and I went with a guide to check out the ruins of Saqsaywaman (or if your a tourist, pronounced "Sexy Woman"), Q'éngo, and Tambochay. It is believed that these structures which were part of the Incan Empire date back to somewhere around the 13th century. We hiked through caves which still contain sacrificial tables, learned about the techniques they used to move and arrange stones (some over [View Full Entry]

Okay, so if you canīt tell, things are off to a slow start for me here. Thereīs an internet cafe about 2 blocks from my house, so alas here I am. I started classes at the school today, but that only took up about 4 hours this morning. I had to take a rigorous placement exam to decide which level of Spanish Iīm at. It was as bad, if not worse than what I expected, but I think I did okay. I find out tomorrow for sure where Iīm at. After the test, one of the teachers at the school took [View Full Entry]

Today marks my 3rd day in Peru, I donīt have anything too exciting to report yet. I didnīt have any trouble with traveling, I made all my connections, and didnīt run into any issues at customs. My homestay mom was there at the airport in Cusco to pick me up according to plan. She is wonderful, very energetic and lots of personality! She has an 18 year old daughter who lives with her and a 26 year old son who is a dentist and lives in his own place in the city. There is another student from Michigan staying in the [View Full Entry]
