Hi Bloggers! So after yesterday we returned to the Zoo for day 2 (Thursday). Andy was on natives, Kangaroos, Echidnas and Wallabies. I was on Koala’s, which was what Andy did yesterday. The sequence of work is very much general maintenance of the animals, their living accommodations and their eating routines, cleaning out water bowls, raking up leaves, changing food bowls and general visible maintenance of the park. The Kangaroo and Wallaby enclosures take a lot of maintenance as it is such a large area. There is a lot of sweeping and raking to do, not to mention dragging heavy hoses out. At the end of the day, the water bowls/buckets/troughs need filling to ensure that the animals have plenty of water overnight. Andy had the opportunity to look after the echidna compound (an Echidna is ... read more

Andy got up at 5.30 this morning and dutifully made me a cup of tea for 6.00. I jumped out of bed showered dressed, breakfasted and before long we were on our way to the Zoo. We did not have to be there until 8.30 however we arrived at 7.30 in eager anticipation of the day ahead. At 8.30 a young lady called Breeze came to collect us, give us our shirts and a brief induction, plus numerous documents where we had to sign everything away. We were met by Sarah who kindly took us to our various posts. Andy was given the enviable task today of being on Koalas and me…. Oh dear I was on birds! Still I was not too disappointed it is the experience that counts. We were given maps, so I ... read more

This early start to the day is becoming habitual now, this morning was another 6.00 wake up. Andy was already up and banging away at the keys on the laptop writing up yesterdays blog. Earlier Andy had released the awning pole from the front of the bedroom as the sun was shining directly onto the bed and it was already an exceptionally hot day, there was no breeze at all. That made it much more bearable for a short time, before finally giving in and getting out of bed for a welcome shower. We left to go to Starbucks at 7.30; this also is becoming a bit habitual, a morning coffee and the Internet. We wanted to finish updating the blogs that we uploaded last night and see who was around on Skype. My sister in ... read more

I was up early this morning, around 5.00am, I like to get things moving while Caroline was still in bed I pottered around. I wanted to take the tent down but Caroline would not appreciate it while she was still in it. I asked Caroline if she wanted a cup of tea. Now in Caroline’s words: I peeled an eyelid open as the daylight was already flooding in through the mesh covered windows in the tent. It felt cool, the first time in days. I heard Andy ask me if I wanted a cup of tea to which I answered, “Yes please, what time is it?” Andy responded “5.30” I said “no thanks 6.00 will be fine” and promptly went back to sleep. While Caroline was still in bed I started pack the truck up and ... read more

In our infancy of off road driving yesterdays nightmare proved to be a wake up call to us to realise how geared up we needed to be for something that the Aussie’s take for granted. When they go out in their 4WD they have snatch ropes, shovels, air compressors, tyre gauges, 2 spare wheels. They fully understand tide times and how to drive on the sand. Even though we got out of such a difficulty and though not worried about our safety just felt, that maybe we had bitten off more than we could chew. So we convinced ourselves it would be better to ‘get back on the horse’ (one for you Babs!) I said to Andy we had to get back out there and try it and put into practice the things that we learned ... read more

While packing the tent up, remaining cautious about the terrain that we were in. Everything bites here, some things are poisonous but thankfully most things are not although they still hurt. I turn just in time to see a huntsman bounce (yes bounce!!) across the leafy floor of the national park and underneath Chelsea. Following last nights drama in the loo’s and seeing various types of spiders including the hideously looking Huntsman I felt a bit vulnerable to the wildlife. These Huntsman were a good 5 inches across from one leg tip to another, we did not measure it so just take our word for it! They are not venomous but they sure do look mean! Well they may say the same about us. We got back on the road, or should I say off road ... read more

A busy start to the day heralded that today was moving out day from the apartment, after completing some chores we finished our packing. We had to go and get the number plate for the trailer, as we mentioned before the truck and the trailer have different registration plates. We packed all our stuff and had purchased some storage boxes that would be useful when packing up the camper trailer, and when it came to moving the stuff from the apartment to the trailer our theory was confirmed. It al had to be packed logically for obvious reasons. The trailer was finally hitched to the truck, and we were off, our first stop was back to Camping Country to exchange a light we had purchased and to collect the awning, that we forgot to put in, ... read more

Well the day finally arrived, it was like our Christmas come early, today was the day that our Camper trailer was ready, and we were ready to collect it. Other things had to happen first, complete the blog for Wednesday and publish it, ensure the money was in the correct account for the bank transfer. We had our morning ritual at Starbucks, a small coffee each as both Caroline and myself need to loose some weight. We arrived at Country campers and were made very welcome as usual, all the team seemed happy to see us as they new what we were collecting today, Arron and his new assistant Travis greeted us and Arron had confirmed he had read the blog, I am so pleased as we put a lot of effort in to doing it, ... read more

It was quite an uneventful day today, after the circus of buying the truck, sorting out our roof top tent vs. the trailer, having the interview at Australia Zoo and on and on. We didn’t feel the need to race around, but just to have a couple of days reviewing what we have done, how far we have got and getting this adventure where we both need it to be. The bread had gone over this morning, no muffins and we couldn’t have a lamington cake, well not before cereal anyway. The only problem with cereal and I am a lover of crunchy nut cornflakes is that in this heat the honey that coats each golden flake basically galvanises itself together, so if you can get them out of the box without the aide of an ... read more

Another good nights sleep and early wake up, today was going to be an exciting day for us so waking early was not a problem. Andy was up at about 6.00 this morning; he had a better night sleep than last night when I woke him up to deal with our "intruder". I genuinely thought someone was trying to break in, hearing a thud on the window and then the frames started to rattle, then a scuffle outside so you could forgive me for thinking that. Anyway I slept the night with a gel icepack on my leg to help reduce the heat emitting swelling from my sandfly bites. These pesky things give one of the nastiest bites! In fact you don’t particularly notice that you have been bitten you then notice a small red blob ... read more
