| 27th April 2009 Gary | Love the blog - From: Guess who's back in Town Keep up the great blog. Hope it doesn't take away from your journey of a lifetime. The blog does take time, doesn't it. Checked out the other blogs you mentioned. At this point Les & Marilyn only have one entry. Hope they get more up so that I can follow their adventures too. The Trumans link that you put up is incorrect. Here is the correct one: http://www.getjealous.com/Travelintrueys ENJOY Gary |
| 23rd April 2009 kangaroojack | Wombats & WA - From: The Permanent residence of Mr & Mrs Smith Hi Lee and Marilyn, thanks for your comments, ooops we didn't actually miss the 20th, unfortunately the date entry was wrong so I have now corrected. With regards to wombats and photos of wombats, this is a serious problem, we have not seen any since leaving Tasmania!!! We are not sure if wombats are in WA, we were assured that we would see them on the Nullarbor, but no, not a single live animal apart from a snake. I keep promising Andy pancakes but we never seem to have time to do them. Glad that you are reading the blog, we really enjoyed our time with you on Cradle Mountain and hope that we can see you sometime soon. Take care Caroline & Andy |
| 23rd April 2009 kangaroojack | Laugh Out Loud - From: The Permanent residence of Mr & Mrs Smith Hi Tina, thanks for your comment, glad the blog makes you laugh out loud, Andy does have a way with words!! Perth is really quite nice, even though the weather turned suddenly cold causing me to put a fleece on again! I read your very long email and will try to find time to respond shortly.Love to you and Paul & Sydney & Planty & Cactus and anyone else I forgot to mention... C xx |
| 22nd April 2009 Lee & Marilyn Harris | Word Count Exceeded - From: The Permanent residence of Mr & Mrs Smith Dear Andy and Carol, Tch tch! Having to keep a watchful eye on you as you have skipped the 20th. I hope this is merely a server problem (like “Error 200,000 - Word Count Exceeded” or similar) . . . If this is not the case then I say poor show. (Don’t let writer’s cramp get the better of you, there are people relying on your blog). Also . . . I don’t mean to be picky but I notice photos and mentions of Wombats have fallen off rather seriously (Please refer 10th to 12th March in particular). Can something be done about that? Do they not have Wombats in WA? With love (and spoonful) from Lee and Marilyn |
| 21st April 2009 Tina | Hope the feeling remains! - From: The Permanent residence of Mr & Mrs Smith Hey You two, Sounds like the adventure is still just that, and your now well experience travellers, still loving the blog and well worth your efforts! Some of your comments should go in a book as they've made me laugh out loud, this one in particular Andy "Driving in on the highway I have a funny feeling, a pleasant one similar to wind"... :o) Hope Perth is all The T's want - and more!! | 5th April 2009 Gary | Travels - From: Crossroads of Australia I am so envious. You appear to be heading in the general direction of our trip last spring (fall here in Canada). Love the blog and will continue to follow you wonderful journey. mytb.org/ThePass |
| 5th April 2009 Jan Davis | Kings in Grass Castles - From: Crossroads of Australia Hi Andy & Caroline, You are now starting to get into the "real" outback areas of our vast country. Woomera you will find fascinating as it was once the "rocket range" where test rocket launchings and firings were carried out, mostly during the 50's & 60's. Lots of intersting stuff to look at. Sydney Kidman was one of Australia's wealthiest cattle barons and greatest land owner. Eventually his land holdings consisted of more than a hundred cattle stations reaching from South Australia to the Gulf of Carpentaria in northern Qld, covering and area greater than 125,000 square miles. This is more than the total area of England, Scotand, Wales and Ireland combined and, amounting to around 3% of Australia. The Kidman Way is also named after him. Starting out as a "beef road", enabling him to get his livestock from western Queensland to the rich beef markets in the south - Adelaide, Sydney & Melbourne - today, it is a well-travelled highway of approx 800kms through outback NSW, stretching from Jerilderie (bushranger country, Ned Kelly, etc) in the south through Hillston, Cobar, Bourke and on to Barringun just south of the Qld border. Also, if you want a good read about another of our pioneering families, grab a copy of "Kings in Grass Castles" by Mary Durack. The Durack family were almost solely responsible for opening up the vast Kimberley Region of north-western Australia and, even today, still hold the record for the longest cattle drive in history from the eastern states to Western Australia. Cheers, Jan & Ted PS The "mini tornado's" you will see a lot of throughout the outback are commonly known as "willy-willy's". Don't normallly do a lot of damage but, don't ever get caught in one or stand in one as you will get peppered with sticks and stones and other debris as well as covered in choking dust! Doesn't do the duco on your vehicle any good either. :) xxx |
| 4th April 2009 Helen | - From: Penfold, Trusty Sidekick or Winemaker? Hi, Just thought I would mention the car and motorbike museum in the Barossa. Well worth a visit and it is huge. I should have mentioned it earlier but only just remembered. Love the blog - am enjoying your trip. Love Helen |
| 2nd April 2009 Darryl and Sarah | Stamford Grand Glenelg - From: April Fools Day That's where we spent the last night of our honeymoon in February 2000! We hadn't booked anywhere and just wandered into the foyer looking like tramps but wound up with a 2 night stay with special room & honeymoon dinner for about £100 all in - result! It's right next to the end of the tram line and alot of street entertainers hang around there, it's great fun and the view across the sea is tremendous! Happy memories! So glad that you two are having so much fun, we're picking up so many good ideas from your blogs. I've just been searching for a car charger for the laptop...also Dell!! We start our journey going anti-clockwise from Melbourne so you never know, we might cross paths which would be fab. Must go ... clock's ticking!!! Dar & Sar |
| 27th March 2009 The Blytons | Sorry we missed you at KI - From: Twelve A’Possums Got your message, we are just on the ferry going back over to the mainland. Heading for Adelaide this arvo. Your blog is fabulous, we will be reading often, keep in touch. We had trouble getting on a ferry, this was the only one until Monday, so we decided to go as we had seen everything. Unfortunately we have limited time so we are making the most of our time and getting back while we can, saw everything on the island anyway. Cheers Sharon, Tim & Wade xxx |

| 25th March 2009 Mum and Dad | Pasties and snakes - From: Going to K I We remember those days in Trewoon and the delicious pasties but also I remember that when I was walking up the hill to your school to work on dinner duty when I saw what I thought was a very large snake on the path in the distance......as I approached it I realised that it was a leather belt that had curled in the hot sunshine and looked like a real snake...thank goodness it wasn't. We have had corrugated roads in the USA......all shaken up at the end of the journey...we behave like kids and become vocal as the car judders and shudders over the bumps. xxxxx |
| 25th March 2009 Liz and Rick | More adventures - From: The Golden Caterpillar We have become groupies! Can't wait to read about the next adventure of the T's. | 23rd March 2009 Jan & Ted | The Coorong - From: Home of A Legend Hi Andy & Caroline, If you are still in the vicinity, make sure you check out Chinamen's Wells there in The Coorong. Historical sites with actual water wells constructed by early immigrant Chinese who came to Australia during the gold rushes in the 1800's. When the Victorian Government put a "tax" of 10 pounds on people (particularly the Chinese) arriving on their shores on their way to the goldfields, the Chinese came up with the idea that they would "land" in South Australia and then walk the rest of the way into Victoria, thereby avoiding the 10 pound tax. Of course, it was a very long walk through some very barren and inhospitable country and they needed drinking water so, they built a series of these wells so that they could be sure of available water to sustain them on their journey. Still well (pardon the pun!) preserved and, one still with water in it, even today. Love your work! Love Jan & Ted xxx |
| 23rd March 2009 kangaroojack | Salt - From: Done and Dusted Next time we go hiking shall take salt in my back pack. I hate leeches they make such a mess!! Caroline |

| 18th March 2009 Jan & Ted | 12 Apostles - From: S*x is like !! Hi Andy & Caroline, Great photos! These scenes bring back a lot of memories for us from when we lived in Melbourne years ago and used to drive the GOR on weekends, etc. You will get some of the wildest weather in Australia along this strip of the coast but, even so, still well worth the drive, whatever the weather - fine, sunny, wet, cold or "blow-your-head-off" windy. The GOR has many moods and, the scenery just as spectacular, whatever the weather! Easy to see why this is known as the Shipwreck Coast. In the old days, many a sailing boat came to grief on the treacherous reefs and rocky coastlines that abound along here. Warrnambool is a decent-sized town and, Flagstaff Hill, well worth a visit. Re the Wicked campervans - aren't they great? and, all individual. We love reading the different sayings and phrases on each one. Very amusing! Cheers. Love, Jan & Ted xxx |
| 15th March 2009 Jan and Ted | Leeches - From: Done and Dusted Hi Andy & Caroline, I'm a country girl - up until I got married anyway (and still one at heart) and, NEVER, EVER, got used to leeches. Still dislike them intensely but, one thing that will dispatch them quicker than anything else is to sprinkle them with ordinary table salt. Works instantly. Happy hiking! Love, Jan |
| 14th March 2009 kangaroojack | Armchair Travel - From: Amazing Hi Jan and Ted, thanks for your comments. Glad you are still enjoying our "daily drivel", we do enjoy writing it, lets hope we don't run out of things to say before the end of our journey otherwise you and all of our other blog readers will get bored. Heres to some more adventure. Catch up soon Caroline & Andy |
| 14th March 2009 kangaroojack | Damper - From: “Cocky’s Joy” Hi Helen, this is the third time I have heard of Damper this week. We will have to try some. Hope you are all well on the farm, and great new about your 15mm of rain. It is pouring on Tasmania today, we believe it has come from Victoria, I do hope that it was with you for a while first. Please can you tell Wally that he is Andy's favourite and he is missing him very much. Great photos too. We look forward to catching up again in person sometime when you are back on the mainland again. Love, Jan & Ted xx |
| 13th March 2009 Helen | Cockys Joy - From: “Cocky’s Joy” Hi Andy and Caroline, I remember the golden syrup and butter version as well. Usually home made butter after milking the cow and separating the cream from the milk and then making the butter. We had it only last year when we had children for a visit and had a bonfire below the house. Made up damper dough and then rolled it around green willow sticks and cooked over the fire and then pulled them off and filled the middle with cockys joy. To die for. Love Helen |
| 13th March 2009 Jan & Ted | Childhood Memories - From: “Cocky’s Joy” Hi guys, Yes, "cocky's joy" was a favourite spread for bread during the Depression and World War years because it was cheap and golden syrup does store almost forever but, the formulation was actually equal parts of butter and golden syrup mixed together into a smooth spread. As kids, my brother and I were introduced to it by our Dad as it was a favourite of his. Being from humble farming folk, money was never plentiful but, we always had this sweet treat to savour. Tastes even better on fresh damper, an Aussie homemade type of bread (more like a huge scone really!) and not the stuff they sell as damper in some bread shops. Washed down with steaming, hot billy tea (water boiled in a billycan over an open fire with a handful of tea thrown in once boiled). A real taste treat. You'll have to try it! :) Keep up the good work! Jan & Ted |
