Nov 6, 2009 There were a few things Justin’s Grandpa was worried about before we left for our trip. One of them included how well we’d take the altitude at the highest capital city in the world at 3660 meters, La Paz. Since Justin and I had already been through our share of high altitude cities including Potosi, Bolivia (+4000 meters), and places throughout our Uyuni Salt Flat tour such as the site with the geysers at 5100 meters, we thought we’d be fine. Walking to the bus terminal in Arica, Justin and I decided that we’d watch our luggage carefully. The last thing we needed was Justin’s pack to be stolen so we kept a close eye on it. Our bus company insisted that we hand over our luggage to them on the trolley with ... read more

Nov 8, 2009 Through prior research, we knew of an ancient city, Tiwanaku, near La Paz. We were not sure the best way to get there, so we booked a day trip with our Loki Hostel. The tour included transportation, lunch, and a guide (the best attribute because it was not self-explanatory). On our tour bus we met Amy (U.K), Dominique (Seattle), and Tim (Australia). Amy was “killing time” in La Paz waiting on her friends to arrive from Rurrenabaque. They had been stuck there over a week because of the bad weather. We were very glad we decided not to go because a week or more waiting for an airplane would have caused us to miss quite a bit of other destinations. Additionally, the bus route is the most dangerous in the world; the week ... read more

Nov 5, 2009 Today was Kyleigh’s (Justin’s niece’s) first birthday! Uncle Justin was sad not being able to be there for Kyleigh’s special day but hoped her day was fun! We arrived super early in Arica an decided to wait in the bus terminal until it was a reasonable time to go to a hostel to check-in. Hearing that it only rained twice a year in Arica, we were optimistic of having a clear, sunny beach day. But looking at the sky at 7:00AM, it didn’t look very promising. The sky was dark with heavy clouds and actually made Arica look pretty gloomy. Justin and I joked that we brought bad weather to every place we went to. Looking back, it rained on tropical Easter Island, it rained hard when we were at Iguazu Falls, and ... read more

Nov 3, 2009 Our tour of Salar de Uyuni, the lagoons, and the other sites were amazing. However, we weren’t too thrilled with our guide who seemed to always be in a hurry and dropped us off about 90 min before the planned end to the tour. Normally I wouldn’t complain but he should have made sure we didn’t have any customs issues - which we did. The border crossing is very shady anyways (you must obtain a purchased stamp in Uyuni before the tour begins). In Uyuni the “company” who stamped the passport used a date two days after we would be crossing. Rumi caught it earlier, but I didn’t think we would have too much difficulty because we had an exit stamp. After our guide left us in the middle of the desert with ... read more

Nov 1, 2009 I expected to wake up late since we didn’t go to sleep around 3:30AM, but when I looked at my watch, it was only 7:00AM. We only slept for 3.5 hours but we both slept well and were wide awake. We were still in awe and partially in denial that my pack got stolen the night before. Since my clothing didn’t take up too much space, I had all of our toiletries and other items we used daily, such as our toothbrush, toothpaste, face soap, lotion, sunscreen, make-up, bug spray, plug adapters, sleeping bag, fleece blanket, and Justin’s shaving stuff (beard growing process commenced once again!). In addition, I lost my bathing suits, micro-cloth towel, brand new hiking shoes (but I got to use them a few times before they were taken!), sandals, ... read more

Oct 31, 2009 We don’t like early buses, but because we wanted to squeeze the silver mine between our trip to Uyuni, we scheduled the earliest ride to Potosi. We prearranged a taxi for around 0630 from Wasi Masi and headed to the Sucre bus terminal. I was more initially affected by the incline to the highest city in the world. Upon arrival I felt very weak and had problems breathing. Rumi had no complaints and said she was fine. We were told that there would be someone waiting for us with a sign to go on the tour of the silver mine. We arrived around 1030 and had scheduled the tour for 1200. Since there is no terminal in Potosi, we were a little worried about whether this “plan” was going to go smoothly. Fortunately, ... read more

Oct 29, 2009 We arrived in Sucre around 0730 after our very adventurous first experience in Bolivia. Despite the stress and lack of sleep, we both seemed to be rejuvenated by finally arriving in Sucre. We initially opted to go to a hostel right across the bus stop, but the lack of foreigners, WIFI, and free breakfast influenced us to go to another hostel. We had done some research and found a great hostel, Wasi Masi. Fortunately the hostel we initially went to was nice enough to call us a cab and do the price negotiation for us. Since we arrived in the early morning, we couldn’t check in until afternoon. Rosanne, the innkeeper, was very nice and gave us a free breakfast with tea. As we were waiting around until check-in time, we met lots ... read more

Oct 27, 2009 Our flight from Brasilia didn’t depart until early afternoon. Additionally, we had a five hour layover in Sao Paulo so we did not arrive in Santa Cruz, Bolivia until around 0100. Through our research we knew that taking a taxi cab from Bolivian airports was dangerous; especially Santa Cruz and especially in the middle of the night. We planned to stay the night at the airport if possible and we had a back-up hostel address and phone numbers. Upon arrival to Santa Cruz I was graciously welcomed with being secluded from the rest of the passengers, set aside in a corner, and then required to pay a cheap 135USD to obtain a Bolivia sticker (more than any other Visa I’ve ever paid for). Fortunately the airport was safe and was open 24 hours. ... read more

Oct 24, 2009 We realized that Brasilia, Brasil was not a normal tourist destination, especially a backpacker destination, while looking for accommodations and info. We went to all of the normal hostel sites and discovered that no hostels existed. There was a “guest house” that’s prices rivaled those of a midrange hotel. Slightly concerned, we asked our hostel in Rio for assistance. They found one cheap alternative, but the prices were higher than a hostel (we would later find out that it was simply someone’s home that was trying to make extra money - probably illegal because there was no advertisement/sign/signal out front). As we were looking for information on blogs and other sites, we soon realized that everything was extremely expensive and notes on Brasilia consisted of its short history and architectural significance, none on ... read more

Oct 19, 2009 Waking up super early to catch our flight meant that we wouldn’t be indulging in our delicious breakfast at Hostel Bambu. We were quite disappointed but catching our bus to the airport was more important. The buses in South America were pretty much on their own program so none of the locals knew what time the airport bus came. That meant that we would be leaving our hostel really early to catch a bus that came at a random time. It was pouring with rain and after waiting 40 minutes, we were on our way to the airport. There were a couple of things that worried us before heading to Rio: weather and safety. Justin checked the weather forecast for the next 5 days in Rio the night before. I was pretty bummed ... read more
