Dec 21, 2009 As usual, we had a very early flight for our trip from Cancun to Mexico City. I was excited because I have always wanted to go to Mexico City, a place where some of family has spent a lot of time. However, both of us knew that this was our last stop on our trip, so we were both sad that the end came so quickly. The one big thing we wanted to see was the great pyramids, and if we had time - go to the Anthropology museum. Our plane arrived around 9:00 AM and we made it to our downtown hotel around 11:00. I was able to get some information on the pyramid tour from the hotel across the street and found it was too late to go that day. We ... read more

Dec 22, 2009 After the church tour we left for the pyramids…. Or so we thought. As with a lot of our other tours, the tour groups always get a special cut to hook up their buddies by taking us to gift shops/convenience stores/restaurants/etc. Well, this was quite a stop - over an hour at a gift shop. If the Belgium/Mexican couple wouldn’t have bought something, I think they would have kept us there until we bought something. It was a nice gift shop, most of their specialty was Aztec carvings and statues from obsidian. Very authentic, very well done, but very pricey, so we just drank our free tequila shots and waited by the van. Outside did have some interesting things. The picture describes their “beauty” much more than I can, but we got to ... read more

Dec 18, 2009 The bus ride to Cancun was rather uneventful. We stopped at Playa del Carmen before arriving to Cancun. We both agreed it looked like a great place to stay away from the chaos of which is Cancun. The bus station at Cancun was our first indication that this wasn’t your typical Mexican town. The mix of vacationers, Spanish, English, fast food, heavy traffic, shopping, skyscraper hotels, could have easily been a Floridian beach town. No difference except Cancun may be more English friendly! We got tickets to a town near Chichen Itza, called Piste. It was leaving shortly, so we decided to get some lunch at a local fast food burrito place across the street from the bus station. The bus ride to Piste was not as comfortable; for the majority of the ... read more

Dec 16, 2009 Today was the day we knew we were going to leave Guatemala, and our short visit definitely didn’t do this country justice. Guatemala had so much to offer but since time was of the essence, Justin and I made Tikal our only Guatemalan visit. As for our next destination, we weren’t too sure where we were going to be at the end of the day. This day proved to be just as adventurous as it was spontaneous. We left the Jaguar Inn in Tikal for the Guatemala/Belize border in a collectivo bus for 80 quetzals ($10US) per person. Two hours later, the five of us (Mike, Aaron, Frank, Justin and me) arrived at the border about 3:45PM and said our goodbyes. Aaron and Mike were going to San Ignacio for a scheduled tubing ... read more

Dec 15, 2009 We did arrive to Belize City in time to catch the early bus to Tikal (9:30AM). However, because the locals were trying to fill every seat on the bus, we didn’t depart until almost 12:30PM. Before we departed we knew money was an issue because Tikal does not have an ATM. We decided to get some Belice Dollars to exchange at the border. Later we would find out they offer horrible exchange rates. On our bus we met Michael and Aaron from Canada and Frank Houston…from Dallas. We were all planning on the same type of excursion (1-2 Day trip in Tikal, Guatemala then return to Belice), so we decided to stick together. The bus arrived at the Guatemala border after a couple of hours and we all paid our expensive Belice departure ... read more

Dec 12, 2009 Very excited to start our sailing trip we dismissed the early cloudy sky thinking that it would go away. Well…it didn’t. We were told to bring our bags to the boat around 0730 so they could begin loading. Afterwards I traded my Bolivia guide book for a Clive Cussler novel (appropriate because he writes about the sea). Then we got breakfast where the rest of the group was meeting. Everyone else seemed to know each other (met in a hostel), so we initially felt kind of like the outcasts. We knew as soon as we were under way, we would get to know everybody. Our group consisted of: Claire, Katherine, and Kasha from the U.K.; Kevin and Morris from Ireland; Dan from Denmark; Liz from Australia; and Francesco from New York. Their ages ... read more

Dec 9, 2009 Another early morning flight meant that we'd be waking up in the middle of the night to get to the airport. But we didn’t care because we were on our way to Belize! We usually have great success with having free wifi at the airport, but this time we weren't as lucky. We flew from Managua, Nicaragua (with a layover in El Salvador) to Belize City, Belize! The Belize currency was exactly half of the US currency ($2 BZD = $1 US) so calculations were easy to make. We weren't exactly ecstatic to hear that the only way to get into town was by taxi but $40 BZD later, we found ourselves in the taxi with Carlos, a very nice local who drove us to the water taxi in no time. It was ... read more

Dec 6, 2009 When in Nicaragua, an address of the destination should be sufficient enough for a taxi driver to figure out how to get there, right? Wrong. Taxi drivers here needed landmarks and pretty much exact directions to get there. If only we knew that before we arrived in Leon, we would’ve found our hostel quicker. Despite our little set back on finding Big Foot hostel, we toured around Leon with all of our luggage and saw some churches, found a movie theatre, a big supermarket and places to eat before checking into our hostel. The big thing we were interested in doing in Nicaragua was the Volcano Boarding Tours that were offered at Big Foot hostel. Unfortunately, we only had one full day in Leon, and there was only one spot left for the ... read more

Dec 4, 2009 Unlike the USA/CND/JPN, times are far from being “exact” in Latin America. In fact, I don’t even know why there is a bus schedule. We kept missing the bus the day prior to our departure, so we decided to get to the bus stop very early to not miss our transfer in Liberia. Lucky for us, the bus left about 30 min before its “scheduled” time (usually in Latin America transportation is late…not early!). Everyone says the bus to Liberia is only about 90 minutes long. After stopping at every little town hidden in the jungle between Tamarindo and Liberia, we arrived to the Liberia Golden Arches (McDonalds) about two and a half hours later. It was a pretty ride through a little more of Costa Rica. Despite being a more expensive area ... read more

Dec 2, 2009 Looking forward to a bit of sun and sand, our next destination, Tamarindo, was a beach town on the Pacific side of Northern Costa Rica. From the Alfaro Station in San Jose, we were able to take a cheap local bus to Tamarindo. During our 5-6 hour ride, we noticed that the bus hadn’t moved for a while. A little concerned that we were in yet another roadblock, we quickly realized that there had been a head on car collision with a huge truck. Both vehicles were in rough shape. It probably didn’t help that it was dark and the road were a bit slick from the rain. By the time we got to Tamarindo, it was already dark out but the little beach town was lit, restaurant and bars were still open ... read more
