Katie Hello, everyone! My name is Katie, and I'm 18. I speak French fluently thanks to my exchange to Rombas, France during 2007-2008. I spent one year abroad there, and I went to school at Lycee Julie Daubie. Although I had to make up a lot of work that I missed as a junior, I wouldn't ever take back that year I lived in France. I learned many valuable life lessons, and I plan to spend another year abroad in college! Honestly, learning a language is the best gift one could give to oneself and I highly reccomend anyone to participate in learning more about our world's cultures.

Moi
Au Lycee Julie Daubie 2007

Ugh, so I am sick and you have no idea how hard it is to be sick in a different country! In France they don't have health insurance like us Americans. Well, they do but it is completely different. I feel like I am pretty much isolated thanks to my sinus infection because just about everybody does not want to be around me. Who can blame them? But, when you don't have your parents or siblings or whoever to help look out for you it gets pretty tough. Even if you have a boyfriend or girlfriend they just don't want you [View Full Entry]

Engagement Party Europe » France » Lorraine » Metz
My Room
My Room
I know now that I have integrated into the family... when Pierre throws all of his clothes in my room.
On Saturday the Galvez's had a big engagement party for their eldest son Matthieu and his fiance Claire. Claire's family arrived late in the afternoon, and then her mom came later. She has two siblings whose names I completely forget (yeah, kinda typical of me!), and her parents are divorced. We started eating around 9:30pm, and finished at 1am! Seriously, when people have ANY type of party in France, it lasts until midnight or 2am even if it is totally awkward. In America, we end things at 10pm! I think we need to learn something from the French... including eating. Anyway, [View Full Entry]

I just finished up the first day back to school after 15 days of vacation! I was in the Alps for my first week, and the second was spent in the Vosges mountains. In the Alps I was with the Gelmetti family, and there we were stationed at the Grizzly Hotel in Les Deux Alps. Every morning we would take "les oeufs" up to the top of the mountain, and from there we would choose our paths down. I was with my first host family, the Gelmetti's, for this first week. For the second week I was with my host family [View Full Entry]

At first, when I applied to the WIA exchange program I honestly was not thinking about the long term effects this year would bore on me. I thought, "Oh hey, it's just a year, and I don't know French but I don't think that this is really a big problem." Not knowing French was a HUGE problem at the beginning! I was just downplaying everything, and I am almost glad that I left myself as a blank canvas not knowing the language. I have proved to myself that I can learn anything fast; it just takes dedication and large amounts of [View Full Entry]

New habits! Europe » France » Lorraine » Metz
I know that when I return to my home of Boston, MA in June/July that I will be obviously different in some ways more than others. I figured I would list some of them now just so you can be prepared for when I come back! New Habits: *I eat a load of food at breakfast and lunch, but hardly anything at dinner. This is how the French do it! *I don't snack anymore! *I drink MILK... out of a bowl. *I eat cheese more often now, but now as much as the French because you get super constipated sometimes. *I [View Full Entry]
