We are Rene and Crystal Hoekstra. We are a middle aged couple who instead of having extra-martial affairs for our midlife crisis decided to ride a Kawi for a year and explore some of this wonderful world that we live in. O.K so all kidding aside, we are blessed to be able to fullfill a long time dream and take a year off work and travel.

We will travel our last weeks in this blog. Through the rest of California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia and finally to Alberta. We feel like we were one the home stretch and that comes with some mixed emotions. We both are anxious to return home and get on with our lives, but sad in some way to see this amazing journey end. So with these differing emotions we head home. I think Garth Brooks in his song, "The River", just might say it best: "You know a dream is like a river Ever changin' as it flows And a dreamer's just a vessel That must follow where it goes Trying to learn from what's behind you And never knowing what's in store Makes each day a constant battle Just to stay between the shores" ....................... ... read more

Well we are headed towards San Fransisco and the Frisco Bay in this blog. We have been there before, but just briefly with the kids about 10 years ago.. This time we will be there longer so we think we'll do some ......."sitting on the Dock of the Bay". We'll watch "the tide roll away" and possibly even "waste some time". Mon-May 16, 2011 HAPPY BIRTHDAY to our Cyndi. Our beautiful middle daughter turned 26 year old on this day. We woke up in sunny Bakersfield California. Well we really didn't sleep all that well. It turned out that the motel we stayed at recieved most of their patronage from long haul truckers. Good for them, but I heard the last trucker come in to his room at about 1:30 am and then I started to ... read more

Sun - May 08, 2011 Happy Mother's Day, first to our own mothers, then to the newest mother in our family, Amanda and then to all of our family and friend mom's who we are blessed to have in our lives!!! We started our Mom's Day by attending the United Methodist Church in Page. I received a carnation and some hand lotion as a gift for being a mom. After church we spent a couple hours reading our books and working on the blog. After the last few exciting days we have had, we felt we needed some time of not seeing or doing anything much. But.... at about 2:00pm we jumped on the bike to check out the Glen Canyon Dam that is near Page on the Colorado River. The Glen Canyon Dam is just ... read more

For 3 months English was not the first language of the country or peoples we were visiting, so when we arrived in Ontario and didn't have to translate the signs or ponder the directions of people it was quite a wonderful feeling. I never realized what a beautiful language English really is. Thursday April 14, 2011, Starting at 9:00 am we spent the next 8 hours flying above the clouds towards our home country of Canada. Not home, home to Alberta, but the next best place, Ontario. We arrived at 12:00 pm, went through customs, found our luggage and went to find where the girls would be coming in. We had to only wait about 40 minutes and then there they were. Such a wonderful sight.... to see the ones who hold your heart. I couldn't ... read more

We can't believe that we have been in Holland already for 4 weeks. We have only one week left and still feels like so much to see, do and hear. April 01. 2011 After a great night's sleep and some time to relax for a couple days, we were ready again to see some more sights.  We headed back to Alkmaar, to check out the cheese market. Cheese has been weighed in Alkmaar since 1593. The cheese farmers would haul their cheese to the market and then the cheese inspectors would come to the market and examine the cheese. The merchants would then settle on a price for the cheese by slapping each other's hands. Once there was an agreed price they would shake hands and the cheese would go to the weighing house. Cheese carriers ... read more

Off to Rome------Hmmm maybe not!! Before we start this adventure I must make sure I correct some facts that I included in the last blog about Holland. I stated it had 11 provinces and thanks to one of the blog readers I now know it actually has 12 provinces. The other correction I need to make is that Frisian is not a dialect of Dutch, rather it is Holland's only other official language. Thanks Dad for that correction. So hopefully now I have the facts straight for all of us. Let's continue the adventure. Wed, Thurs and Friday - March 16-18, 2011 We left Amsterdam train station, running for the Euro bus lines. We got to the bus station with just minutes to spare and while standing in line waiting to purchase our bus tickets, it ... read more

So we are on our way to Holland, often times called The Netherlands. The Netherlands is made up of 11 provinces and a bunch of small islands. There is a very unique culture in Holland and we are interested to learn more. Both Rene and I have deep roots in this Dutch land. Both of our families are from the Province of Friesland, a province in the North of Holland and we are both very excited to explore these roots and see where our ancestors came from and how they lived and loved in Holland. So let's check out Holland Mon- March 07, 2011 We flew to Amsterdam and arrived at 9:00 am. In Thailand time that was about 5:00 pm. anyway we had connected by email with Rene's cousin Seite and her husband Henk. Henk ... read more

So we are ending our trip with a few more days in Bangkok, hanging out with Canadian friends, then a week in playing in the sand, frolicking in the sea and soaking up some sun in the south of Thailand. Then we are spending one last night in Bangkok before the next part of this amazing journey. Tuesday Feb 23, 2011 We woke up early as we were flying from Phomn Penh back to Bangkok. We hired our tuk tuk driver the night before and as he promised he met us in front of our guest house to take us the hour trip to the airport. The plane left on time and we arrived back in Bangkok at about 2:00pm. We knew what the Mike and Jodi were staying at the Bangkok Center Hotel, so we ... read more

Cambodia: A land where the U.S dollar rules, where we met the most friendly people yet in Southeast Asia and a country that has endured and is recovering from great trauma. Let's check it out: Thursday - Feb 17, 2011 We were up early to make our way to Cambodia. Our little boat was leaving at 8:00 am, so we needed to be at the dock at 7:50 ish. Then after a series of transfers we were to arrive in Siem Reap around 8:00 pm that night. LONG DAY of travelling!!! Roy and Linda and Rene and I decided to travel together into Cambodia. Not that is sounded unsafe, rather just more fun to travel with friends on this journey. We were at the dock on time and just like everywhere in SE Asia, the boat ... read more
