I am no longer the only 18 year-old in SJ Vietnam!! :D Monday I turned 19, and even though I hadn't planned anything at all and thought it would just be normal day, my wonderful friends turned it into a great day! I woke up to a chocolate christmas calendar and Danish candy from my parents - yay! Then I had lunch at my favourite restaurant in Hanoi (the one with the fish in one of my first entries) and then I went to the cinema to watch a hilarious movie which I cannot remember the name of.. I was told by my housemates that they were taken me out to dinner, but they refused to tell me where they were taking me, so when we arrived at the French restaurant (:D!) I was very happy. ... read more

So last weekend a group of us went by bus to a small town a few hours south of Hanoi, to help clean up the area after having been severely flooded a couple of weeks ago. After a three and a half hour bus ride with way too many people and way too much puking (yes I know, disgusting, but I guess the Vietnamese suffer more from motion sickness than we do..) we finally arrived in this village which I do not remember the name of. We started off with a lunch which included snail, pig intestines and weird looking fishy things, and got a chance to use the excellent toilet facilities - hole in the ground. After this first impression I was somewhat demotivated and not very excited to see where we would be staying. ... read more

Hello hello! Im sorry for the lack of updates recently, but a lot has been going on since my last entry, and I dont have as much time to use the computer anymore. No More Danish House About three weeks ago now the other Danish girls went on a trip to the south of Vietnam. Because I did not want to stay in the house alone, I moved into the other SJ house for the weekend. After talking to all the people living in this house we decided that I would move in permanently, as I get along better with the other international volunteers - I will not go into the details on the internet... But I am really happy about this decision and am having a great time in my new house, although we are ... read more

My Current Work Situation

I have now been working at the hospital for 2 weeks, and it is not at all what I expected. It has actually been kind of a let down. Although I was told I would be teaching English, our job consists of playing with the kids. But there are not enough children, and the ones that are there are either too young or too sick. On a typical day we are 8 volunteers who sit and look at three 4 year old kids who are sitting and drawing with their parents. The main problem is that we cannot communicate with them, neither the kids or the parents, and it feels strange to just sit and stare at a kid who is playing with his mother. So I have asked our coordinator to arrange a meeting with ... read more

I just came back from a wonderful weekend in Sapa, which is probably the most beautiful place in the world! After an 8 hour train ride on a night train (very bumpy and uncomfortable) we arrived in Sapa early Saturday morning. After breakfast we had a few hours to relax in our awesome hotel rooms. It's amazing hoe much we take the little things for granted at home, such as our beds. It was heaven! At 2 o'clock we went to the lobby at met our tour guide Co, a 20 year old local girl who was very nice. Followed by half the girls and women of the town we walked down the mountain to visit the Cat Cat Village - part of the Black H'mong tribe. It was interesting to see how the locals lived, ... read more

At the mid-autumn festival party on Thursday I met a woman who invited me to a 'toy fair'. So on Sunday night we met up with her and her sister and went to this fair. There were SO many people, it was impossible to move, but the atmosphere was really fun to experience and Anh (the woman who took us there) bought me a key chain :) When we finally managed to walk through the whole market we sat down and had the traditional fruit salad drink, which was very good. Because of the mid-autumn festival (which lasts all week apparently) there is so much going on in the country right now. Monday morning we were told that we had to organize another mid-autumn party at the hospital, and that the Danish girls had to perform ... read more

So yesterday we were finally allowed into the hospital! Apparently it is normal to have to wait so long as you need alot of documentation and such in the hospital. After waiting for about an hour, we went up to the 7th floor to what I think was the cancer department. We brought out a box of coloured pencils, pens and paper and sat for a few hours and drew and played with the kids. They were very excited when they saw us and were happy to have something to do. This little girl kept talking to me in Vietnamese, so I got one of the local volunteers to translate for me, she was asking me to draw things for her, so I drew a cat, butterflies, etc. Then one of the boys came over and ... read more

This week was spent at the Youth House (house for short-term volunteers) making masks. Because of the lack of communication and SJ's organizational skills we didn't really know what we were making them for, but we made about a billion and one masks each! Thursday we started realizing that we were celebrating the 'mid-autumn festival' - a national Vietnamese holiday for children. All the SJ volunteers, Vietnamese and international, went by bus to a centre for disabled children in the "country side" (looks exactly like Hanoi) to celebrate this holiday and help set up for the party. The bus ride was highly entertaining as everyone was singing songs from their own countries. We managed to get out of singing a Danish one though. Before going to the centre a group of us went to a kindergarden ... read more

Ok, I have a few hours now to tell you some more about my life here. So starting from the beginning... The flight was very long, but I slept most of the way so it wasn't that bad. Unfortunately there weren't really any good movies to kill the time with, and the food was really bad, as always. When we got closer to Hanoi I changed to a seat next to the window where I could see all the rice fields and Vietnamese people wearing the traditional hat. Then we got to the airport, which, I was told, is just a little shed, but it is actually really nice and very organized. All our bags arrived, thank god, and we just picked up by two people from the office. We immediately realized that the traffic is ... read more

Hello everyone! I'm sorry that it took so long for me to write, but we have been quite busy the last few days. We had three days of introduction, where we went on walking trips around the city. Our work at the hospital doesn't start till tomorrow. I can't wait! The house we are staying in is quite nice. It is in a quiet, fairly rich neighbourhood so it is safe to walk around at night as well. We are about 15 minutes from the centre by bus. The only problem here is the heat! I had to stay home today because I did not feel well. There is absolutely nowhere to go to cool down and our room is boiling! So my new favourite place in the whole world is the pool! Being forced in ... read more
